Well, I went out a few weeks back and bought my very first 360. Big, proud moment!
It RROD'd after ten hours of play.
The replacement has been going fine for a week tho, so here's hoping.

That’s crazy. I bought mine secondhand and it managed to last me close to a year (something that actually kind of surprised me).
I got the red ring o death last night. Can't say I wasn't expecting it. I even looked for my receipt beforehand since it's still covered by EB's warranty. Now I just need to find out whether or not EB will accept me switching just the core system, since I want to keep my hard drive.

I just love how the new chipsets they've been making were supposedly going to stop the RROD... I bought mine at the end of last year, making sure the manufacture date was after such-and-such a date to try to ensure I was getting the new model or whatever...
So much for all that.
Nevermind about the label thing. I got it figured out.

The manufacture date isn't a good indicator I don't think - it's the power supply that tells whether it's new or not (the newer ones draw less power). I've had mine with the Falcon chipset in it for about 10 months now, playing pretty heavily. Hopefully I didn't just jinx myself...
First one I bought used off a buddy. Worked fine for 10 months or so, then RRoD.
The replacement they sent me (totally new console, which I was suprised at), had a fucked up disc drive. I wanted to call and bitch, but even more so wanted to play Halo 3, as I had missed its launch, so I dealt with it. Basically you'd hit eject and it would half open, and you'd have to pull it out and then hit close. That one just recently started eating discs and just being difficult (a whole lot of "Put this game in an XBox 360!" messages when I'd turn it on).
But since it still works most of the time, and other than insanely slow load times on things (which Im sure is more of a hard drive issue, as I brought the HD to a friends house and had the same problems on his box, which is fine...), I was able to sell the whole thing as-is to my roomate for $150 yesterday.
Which I then put towards the deal on Amazon yesterday - XBox 360 w/ 60GB HD, Lego Indiana Jones, Kung-Fu Panda, Lego Batman and a 1600 point card for $299.

To anyone reading this thread whose Xbox hasn't "died" completely, if your 360 has started freezing up on games or getting two red lights, even if it's only "every now and then", you need to start the replacement process.
At that point your system will 100% RROD and die, it's only a matter of how long it will take.

I'm still on my first one, although it is now in the shop thanks to a dead disk drive.
I got my 20 gig pro in September and it's been on the decline since day 1. It's started freezing more and more, and now I'm getting DREs a lot. I can't play multiplayer in World at war, as soon as I try to join a game I get a disc read error. The drive has also started making weird noises. Not the typical "Harrier jet taking off" noise, more like "Mouth full of angry bees" kind of noise.
I'm hoping playing games off the HD with the new dashboard will help, but I'm ordering my coffin tomorrow before the thing decides to shit the bed completely.
I got my 360 premium in october of '06. Last night I got the red ring of death. And I have much RB2/GoW2 to be playing.
Frankly I'm hoping for improvements when I'm sent a new one/refurb. I was getting DRE's out the ass until it died.
Is turn around time generally less than 3 weeks? Or will my month of december break from college be 360-less?

Sorry to keep resurrecting this thread...
I sent off my 360 over a week ago, and they received it, and every time since then that I've logged into xbox.com using my Windows Live ID, I've been able to check the status of my repair, which has been set as "being worked on" or whatever.
Now, all of a sudden, I get an automated e-mail yesterday from the site saying that they "still haven't received my system." So I go to the site, log in, and sure enough, I get a message saying that there is no console tied to my Live ID...
So I panic, and back up, and try entering the service order number they gave me when I initiated the process. That, thankfully, pulls up my console and its repair status. But now I'm paranoid that the console might not make it back to me or something, since my ID and the console have somehow gotten disconnected. I tried calling someone at 1-800-4MY-XBOX, but apparently all he could tell me was that it was a "glitch" and nothing else. Anyone else have this happen?
I got an xbox repaired last month, and got the same "glitch". A week or so later the replacement arrived.
I imagine the problem comes up when the xbox you sent in is considered "unrepairable" and they give you a refurb 360 that has a different serial number.. something in the process that assigns ownership to you is buggy and causes errors.
In a day or so the xbox support page will probably show you a 360 with a new serial number, and is "in warranty".

Thank you, sir.
I just want my box to make it back to me, and not to some unsuspecting schmoe in Jersey.
It was fear of that kind of process that led me to just buy a new 360 when mine went E74 (not covered by extended RROD warranty). A $200 system with the peripherals I had for the old one worked fine and I didn't have to wait a month and pay $120 (or so) to get it fixed.
Yes that problem just happened to me - but check this out - they repaired the console I sent in, and now I cannot play any of my content I downloaded - I redownload, and over and over - won't play just keeps saying I haven't purchased it

I had my fourth failure a few months ago. I've been so busy lately that it took me a while getting around to ordering a repair.
They tell me they're going to replace my console, because apparently four failures is the magic number to actually get something real done about the problem. But it's not going to be a new one. It's going to be refurbished. Urgh.
It really irritates me knowing that eventually, soon, I will need to buy another fucking xbox.

i have been through 4 as of not too long ago
4 rrods and i am pretty sure it was the same machine until the one i have now... which by judging by ups shipping costs was probably a horrible idea by microsoft's part
1: worked for about 6 months solid, then died during halo 3
2: same
3: died immediately upon buying and playing mass effect
4: died immediately upon buying and playing assassins creed special edition
just to give you guys an idea though of just my luck... i probably play on average about 10 hours of xbox 360 a month if you dont count the time it took me to play mass effect all the way through in about a week.
First one, a Halo 3 model. Had it a bit over a year now. Only problem so far has been the recent demise of the included headset, which I replaced with a Messenger Kit. I actually leave the keypad connected, because the underside is a great resting place for the ring and pinky fingers, and seems to smooth out the rumble.

I have this same problem right now. I can play everything fine on my live account, but no dice getting any of it to work offline. I've checked and I have the same serial number and everything. Spent a good hour on the phone last night with Microsoft tech support, and they still weren't able to help out. They are supposed to be calling again in the next few days, but we'll see.
Seems like it would have just been easier to buy an new arcade console rather than repair this one.
I have had my 360 since January. I've had probably a half dozen DRE's, other than that it's been find. Although I got unlucky and don't have an HDMI port on my 360, which means I have an earlier unit so it's only a matter of time. But with only 20GB and no HDMI I think that if my 360 does RRoD I'll just suck it up and buy a 60GB pro.
My original 360 red ringed on me, I bought an elite and sold it to my brother and let him deal with the return and such. I haven't had any issues with hte Elite though.
Just curious...what is the word on the elite models failing? I've had mine for a year, and things have been fine so far. I've kept it lying down, as well ventilated as possible. The thing is really loud, but from what I hear, that's normal. I have a ton of Rock Band DLC, and I've heard some horror stories about not being able to access licensed content after a repair. Is there anything I can do prevent this kind of thing, or is it just a ticking time bomb I get to wait for?
Keep it ventilated and on its side, with something to space it so there's more room for airflow underneath. Then don't worry about it and play your games. I've seen people drop the current retail price of a new Arcade model on stupid shit to extend their console's life. Some of which is actually counter-productive as opposed to merely useless.

My Elite died for the first time at the weekend, and have had it pretty much since launch (so about 15 months).
Mine played up right from getting it though. I would turn it on and it woudn't boot right away. Instead it needed 2 or 3 minutes to warm up before turning it off and on again and it working without a problem.
Here's hoping MS get the replacement out nice and quick. I need my Fallout fix!

There was a discussion about this a while ago. I was persuaded by pictures of the opened console.

Well, mine arrived back at my place today. I was not home to sign for it, so I'll have to pick it up from UPS tonight after work.
My Windows Live ID still does not show any console associated with it, so I'm anticipating getting a different serial number than my original box. I'm also anticipating troubles getting all my DLC working.
Is there any general advice for people who put their old HDD into a new 360 and getting the DLC to work again? Or do I just have to call customer service until they take care of it?

Well, from my experience, your new unit will red ring instantly even though your last one never did... But i digress.
You shouldnt have to call anyone if its your first new unit within the past year. There is a DLC migration tool on the xbox page that allows you to swap all dlc onto the new 360, you just have to have it connected to live, while you go through the process on thier site through your comp.
(And you can only do it once a year for some reason, more than that and youll have to call the help desk)

Odd that the tool only works once a year... Hopefully I won't need it more than that.
And seriously, for those of you who haven't had to send your 360 out for repairs or had to buy a new one... WHY ARE YOU POSTING HERE? JINXES ARE REAL ACTUAL THINGS THAT HAPPEN FOR REAL AND YOU WILL PAY.
Also, I had mine standing vertically for about 2 months, before I got a new entertainment center that allowed me to lay it down, which is how it was positioned for about 9 more months until it red ringed on me.
On the plus side, my console was only gone for 2 weeks in total, whereas I've heard tales of people who've waited significantly longer.

Never mind gravity, its airflow you should be concerned about, and the 360 does not get enough as is. Standing up vertically blocks its primary intake, while the HDD blocks the other.
I've had 2 RRoDs and 1 failed disc drive. I purchased it 2 years ago this November.

Are you sure about that? In my experience with UPS, it's always been "Wait until tomorrow". You have to let them know ahead of time that you'll be picking it up, otherwise they'll just try to deliver again the next day. They can't just go pull your box, apparently.
They're supposed to switch the license for your DLC to the new console ID, but in my experience they don't. After 2 failed attempts at getting them to do it over the phone (so I didn't have to use my once a year transfer), I finally just did it online.

I've never had a problem picking packages up before. There's a shipping facility 3 minutes up the road from me, and whenever I've missed deliveries, I just take the tag down there before they close and pick up the package.
