The only time I had a problem was one time I got there before the truck had come back to the facility, so I had to wait until it arrived and they could get the box for me. I think it was a part for my computer...
Just making sure since I just got my second RRoD, can I send in this one again for free?
(Bought the first one December '05, and got the second one from Microsoft in '06)
My Elite died for the first time at the weekend, and have had it pretty much since launch (so about 15 months).
Mine played up right from getting it though. I would turn it on and it woudn't boot right away. Instead it needed 2 or 3 minutes to warm up before turning it off and on again and it working without a problem.
Here's hoping MS get the replacement out nice and quick. I need my Fallout fix!
I have someone special looking after my elite.
...and the three wise men brought gold, frankincense and pwnage.
Has anyone in this thread had any experience with Best Buy's replacement plan for the 360? I bought it because, at the time, the guy told me it equated to me bringing in a RRoDing 360 and walking out with a replacement model 5 minutes later.
But now that it's actually RRoDing, I inquired at the store the other day and they told me they'd replace it with something of "equal hardware". Does that mean they're going to ship off for a refurbed piece of shit somewhere instead of giving me the (supposedly) more hardy models that are on the floor these days?
I used to work at Fry's, in software. Let me tell you, the biggest killer of X-Box 360s was dust. They'd leave their system on a high shelf, never get canned air, never dust, and then the fan motor starts to go, and then you get an overheated 360.

I've had the same 360 since launch. Like I literally bought mine a day or two after launch. It's still going, but recently I've had some minor problems with games freezing or unreadable discs.

It's not like the 360 is very receptive to cleaning out the dust.. what with the only access being a thousand tiny holes. There's no way to guarantee you remove the dust, some comes out but most of it just swirls around.

When you return a defective console with the Product Replacement Plan you are given in store credit to put towards the cost of a new 360. This can work towards your advantage because if the price of the 360 has gone down since you bought yours you can either take the difference in cash or pick out some games, etc.
You will be able to pick a new console of your choice directly off of the sales floor. Do try to get one manufactured after 10/23/2008 as those have the new Jasper motherboards.
There is no way that the towel trick could void warrantee, right?
I'm guessing it does technically void the warranty. I say technically because there's probably no way for them to tell that it has happened. Unless you cause your 360 to go ablaze. They'll notice that.

So taking the 360 out to the garage behind my house and hitting it with my dad's air compressor every few months wouldn't be a bad idea?
I've had the same 360 since launch. Like I literally bought mine a day or two after launch. It's still going, but recently I've had some minor problems with games freezing or unreadable discs.
I said this earlier but it bears repeating, once your 360 starts exhibiting the freezing and unreadable discs it's only a matter of time, but you're 100% guaranteed a RRoD. After the freezing issues, you'll start to get the 1-3 "overheating red lights" and the 360 will just power down during especially graphical- or physics- heavy portions of games. Then a while later it will happen.
Of course there really isn't a lot you can do about it unless you have no problem voiding your warranty. You get to slowly watch it die because Microsoft will not spring into action unless you have the RRoD. Never tell them over the phone that your Xbox has any problems other than the RRoD. They will flag your console as uncovered by their warranty and charge you fully for any repairs, pretty much even if you do eventually get a RRoD.
However you can at least make plans for getting a new Xbox in the future, either by researching the repair process or saving up money for the (supposedly) RRoD-free Jasper unit.
There is no way that the towel trick could void warrantee, right?
I also can't recommend enough that you never ever ever use this. Yes it "works" in the sense that you may be able to play your Xbox again for a while, but from a technical standpoint it's incredible reckless and downright stupid to do. The reason the "towel trick" works is because the poor cooling solution on the 360 mixed with the shitty solder on the ball grid array for the GPU causes the solder joints to burn out. By purposefully overheating the Xbox like that, you're basically trying to melt the solder joints to create enough contact for it to run again.
Technically Microsoft couldn't distinguish between damage from a RRoD or from the towel trick, but in the end it doesn't fix the underlying problem at all. By the time you've gotten a RRoD, the damage has already been done and the "fix" is more of a stopgag. Most times the problem comes back in a matter of hours.
Here is a fantastic post on the problem: http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=579364 (Ignore the rant about lead-free solder as I'm pretty sure it being "lead-free" has very little to do with the actually underlying problem)
Well, after two years and two months, my 360 JUST bit the dust. Yay for being covered for RRoD. Fucking figures. Just before Christmas, when I'll get my router so I can take advantage of Netflix. Just after I finally got an HDTV (2 weeks ago!). Argh.
Ah well, already called Xbox support and have it set up to be sent in. *SIGH*
Does anyone know how often they just ship a new box vs. repair the old one? I really wish I'd just get a Jasper back in the mail, as opposed to this one.

You know, it'll probably do more wonders for preventing RROD if you regularly kept the whole house dusted. Canned air does help, but I 'spose it would be curing the symptoms, and not the cause.

My house is fairly dust-free.
Of course there's dust, but it seems to take longer to accumulate than you would expect.

Without a filter and pressure regulation? Yeah it'd be a very bad idea.
Your bog standard air compressor will have a lot of moisture in it, which you're going to spray all over an electronic device. Worse.. some of them, at full pressure, can blow components right off a motherboard.

No idea - but I know when I did it I got a brand new one. But 'brand new' only to me, I assume.
I SHOULD have bitched that very instant I plugged it in, but the new one I got in the mail had a fucked up DVD tray right from the start. You'd hit eject, and it would attempt to open the tray, but not quite come out. You'd have to grab it and pull it. Then it scratched up my discs (no, I did not move it from horizontal to vertical while on).
Coincidentally, I got my replacement console in the EXACT SAME window of time the guy in Ohio who is suing MS for sending him back a console that scratched his discs got his. I won't be suing, but just saying - I don't think the brand new ones are "brand new".
And don't be like me, and just be too excited to have a system back at all and ignore the problems. Check it out when you get yours back.

I'm actually looking forward to replacing my second, still working (for the moment) 360 with a cool, quiet Jasper. I'll need more disposable income first, but when I have it, the peace of mind shall be nice.
I hate starting up my 360 because I'm always worried that the next power-on will be another RROD.

Only way i'm buying the "720" at launch is if they've got some really fucking astounding launch titles or if i have a fucking guarantee that there won't be 7 new SKUs in half a year.
how would one go about clearing the dust out of one's 360, anyways
it's not exactly easy to open that fucker up and spray it with air, like you do with a PC
I just got a red ring, and wanted to ask a quick question. It's working fine now, and at the same instant it went out, my other tv that I had going nearby (just using an analogue signal) briefly lost reception. It wasn't a power problem, as my computer, monitor (which I was playing the xbox on), and tv all stayed on, but the tv lost reception for about a second.
I was wondering if this might have been caused by the xbox releasing a burst of EMR when it red-ringed, and while it works now it will probably red-ring again soon. Or, was this caused by something external to the 360?
Thanks.
I think I'm on my fourth... it's going strong so far but I have a feeling I jinxed it by even participating in this thread. Still, that has to say something for the console's superiority to its competition, I'll take ten red rings before I play current gen games on anything else.

I had something like this happen quite a lot at my old apartment. Something with the microwave being on at the same time as the Xbox made everything shut off. I had to go to the fuse box afterward to flip it back on.
Anyway, one time this happened my 360 gave me the old wink of death. Naturally, I freaked out and shut it off right away. After about an hour of waiting, I turned it back on and everything seemed fine.
That happened a little over a year ago, and I haven't had any problems since then. YMMV since you won't know the true answer until a couple of weeks from now.
The replacement from my original RROD back in Sept 2007 has now RROD'd as well. I believe it is still covered for free repair, as I submitted the repair request online and it changed the amount owed to $0.00. I'm hoping it doesn't take too long since I'm now addicted to Fallout and I won't have much luck prying my wife off her 360.
My disk drive conked out... well, it KIND OF works, assuming you want to try booting the disk over and over and over and over in hopes that it'll finally kick in. The number of tries it took kept going up, so I bit the bullet and bought a new one. Bah.
Going on my third one now. Disk drive has now failed twice. Half considering selling it to a store when it gets back and getting a new one with the better chip, lower power consumption, and a bigger hard drive. Luckily my sister and her boyfriends xbox's failed so often they they have an arcade unit they just send around as a loaner to people whose units are getting fixed, just pop my hard drive in and I'm good to go until my system gets back

That happened to me awhile back , even though I got it replaced im still paranoid about it working. Especially now that the warranty is out.
My 360 stopped reading all games for a while. It would say reading for a few seconds, then open tray. I called support to see about getting it repaired, and they suggested clearing my cache. I thought there was no way in hell it would help, but sure enough it reads perfectly now.

If they caught you somehow, yes, it would void your warranty.
But it's hard to catch you. It's also fraud, so ask your conscience if it's okay too.
Edit: thanks guys.
