Anyone have experience with one red segment and an E74 error? That's what I'm looking at while I wait for the terrible tech support to unscrew up their registration mistake.
Still on my launch model. It's three years old now.
Occasionally, when turning it on, it would graphically glitch up (strange artifacts, blurred green screen, etc.), but increasing I think this might have been caused by my television. It hasn't happened yet on my new LCD TV.
Now, if you're asking how many PS2s I've gone through in the last 4 years....

I've had it for a year and two months. When can I expect my first red ring?
So I just Red Ringed for the first time. I requested the box and everything. From start to finish how long should I expect to be without my XBox?
Mine was gone for 14 days exactly.
That's not to bad. I was expecting it to be out of comission for the better part of a month.
I don't know if MS had a slow week, or if the Elite got priority, but I was very happy with the shortness of our departure. Plus, I got a free month of Live Gold with it.
I have a really weird problem. My 360 will turn on, but there's none of the usual swirls of light around the power button, just the power light glowing. And there's no image on the tv. Controllers don't get recognized either. I usually have to turn it off and on like 10 times before it boots up properly. Anyone know what may be going on?
I'm thinking about trading up my 360. Two reasons mainly: to get out of the refurb cycle, and to free up my VGA port on my TV by getting an HDMI unit. Is there anyway to tell I'm getting a Jasper before I open the box? I know you can tell by the power brick, but it would be nice to be able to tell before getting home.
Also, anybody have a clue how much I'd get in trade-in on a unit with a 20 gig hard drive? I already have a 60 I traded up to, so I'll be getting an arcade, and if I get even just $100 that'll be pretty worthwhile.

To find a Jasper, you need to look through the little cutout in the 360 box (where the bar code is), and look for this:
You won't be able to see much, but you're looking for that "12,1 A". You may have to try to shift the console inside the box to get the information to line up just right in front of the cutout.
12.1 Amp is a Jasper, 14.2 is a Falcon, and 16.5 is the original Xenon.

Mine got that, it's either an A/V cable problem (try unplugging/reconnecting it, or a different one) or a general hardware failure. Mine was the second, but I got it back in 2.5 weeks. GoW 2 was taunting me the entire time
The good:
NES - Original, sold 5 years ago in working condition. Only ventilation it required was blowing into the cartridge.
SNES - Original, still works.
Gameboy (Brick) - Vertical lines, still works
Gameboy Color - No problems
N64 - Worked for 6 years, sold
Neogeo pocket - No problems
Nomad - 8 years before it broke. Pretty sure it was just a loose wire that could have been fixed.
Dreamcast - Amazing quality, lasted through many abuses. Ran it without a cover at one point, physically ripping out the CD and putting in the import cd (this was before I got the mod chip... before the disc boot exploit for imports). Survived many drops and transports in back packs in college. Only console system I treated horribly.
oXBOX - Near launch, used very very heavily for XBMC. I'd fall asleep watchingmovies
DS Lite - L shoulder button contact is shoddy at best. Went through a ton of abuse, carried in my pocket for 2 years +. Shoulder button works ok after cleaning every so often.
PSP2000 - Newer but works fantastic so far.
The Bad - I think people forget how horrible the original Playstation was.
Playstation - crappy quality. Was on my third. First two has issues with the laser, had to flip the console to make most games run correctly. Almost all of my friends had issues with the PS1.
PS2 - Launch system had problems with DVD games/movies right away. Eventually stopped working, on my second fat PS2. I eventually just broke down and bought a hard drive to run games off of to avoid wear and tear of the laser.
The worst
360 #1 - RROD, rarely played (talking less than 80 hours total on the system), kept on top of a desk, completely open space, well ventilated. 6 months
360 #2 - Refurb RROD, heavily played, kept on top of a media center, well ventilated. 1 year+
360 #3 - New (HDMI), heavily played 3 months
edit: The worst of the worst
Virtual Boy - Still runs, what a horrible system.
Even though I think the 360 is by far the worst in hardware dependability, I am thinking of getting another one as a media center.
Yeah PS1 laser was very unreliable. (Only console I've had die on me completely, but then again it was a refurb) NES had problems with RCA outputs but my dad was able to fix with solder, and my oxbox no longer displays in color.
My ps2 I got after the first major price drop, its still alive and kicking. (Bro-in-law uses for rockband)
I just bought a 360 lets see how long it lasts. (It better since its a Jasper, if not I'm shoving it up MS's ass)
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.
So if, for example, I have an Xbox 360 with the 60gb HD (The premium?) and it Red Rings, do I take out the harddrive before I send it and if they then send me an Arcade, can I just plug it straight in with no difference?
If it's bundled with Sega Superstars Tennis or Kung Fu Panda and Lego Indiana Jones, it's a Jasper.
Not really. I bought one from Dell.com last week with Kung Fu Panda and Lego Indiana, and it is indeed a Falcon.
Craaap. I just ordered the arcade from Dell.com yesterday. If its not a Jasper I'm sending it back. (I think it was the holiday pack with Superstars Tennis.)

Mine was the Arcade bundle, so you MIGHT be ok.
Yeah I read somewhere that the Arcades are way more likely to be Jaspers than anything else. I think it's funny how we have to look at the volt readings on the back to figure out what version of a video game machine we have. Like it's such a huge secret that Microsoft can't just print it on the box somewhere that it's a Jasper or Falcon. It's like buying computer without knowing how much RAM is in it because the manufacturer won't tell you.

If they printed it on the front, they'd have a bunch of falcons not moving.

It's not unusual for video game consoles to go through various small hardware revisions over their lives. Usually these revisions don't make a lick of difference. Manufacturers don't advertise these changes because "PS2: Now with a different brand of RAM!" doesn't really appeal to consumers.
It's only because people think that a change in the die size of the graphics chip will alleviate the RROD issue that anyone cares in the least which model of 360 they are buying.

Well, I'm happy. I called MS support over a month ago to straighten out my DLC issue, where my roommates couldn't play arcade games anymore. I only recently checked on it and was able to re-download and have the games working again. Yay.
I've had to send 1 back and haven't had a problem with my current. Same number as my Wii. Though my Wii just had a slight graphical glitch from overheating and didn't completely die. Both fixes were free, so at least that's something.
So I'm thinking about getting a 360, but I have a question. I have a nice 22" HDMI monitor for my computer, and would rather play it on there than on my shitty TV. If I get an Arcade, would I be able to hook it up provided I had just a normal, everyday HDMI cable?
yeah all new 360's come with HDMI ports, not sure about all arcades but i know only the older cores and premiums didn't have HDMI. My 360 premium has no HDMI so i use VGA cables to hook upto my TFT with, seriously clear as day, much more so than my brothers big samsung LCD.
My stupid 360 died two weeks ago and my they are still "processing" my box and return shipping label and it is making me feel very stabby. This is my first RRoD. I kept my 360 in a well ventilated area and am always very careful with it. Tomorrow I am going to trade in my Wii and get a PS3. I'll keep the 360 around for any exclusive titles that I must play, but it looks like from this point out PS3 is going to be my console of choice for multi platform titles.

Felt dark planet turn under my feet and knew what cats know that makes them scream like babies in night.
My fourth one has been dead for just ove a week now. Decided to throw in the towel and just get a PS2. And now you tell me that has issues too. That said the previous two I had worked absolutely fine an done was a Silver fatty, the other was the original release. Sold the original one, got an Xbox and then bought the Silver one which I sold a couple months later. I'm very finnicky with these things.

Ok, I'm asking the experienced folks in this thread to give me some advice. My 360 Elite has progressively gotten worse over the last couple of weeks, and now I'm just getting a blue checkerboard pattern or vertical green stripes when I turn it on. I'm five months out of my warranty, and of course, they want me to send them the unit and $100+tax to repair it.
So, here's my question: I've check the unit version, and it's definitely a Xenon. Is it worth my time and money to send the unit in, or would I be better off trying to find a Jasper Arcade for $200, transferring the license, and slapping on my old hard drive? I have no experience with any of this; this is the first time my 360 has died. Alternatively, is there anything in particular I should do before I start spending money on this problem?
Edit: Also, something that comes to mind is that a system update was applied when I started the system today. Is there any possibility that the update caused the problem?
Edit2: Random news article supporting this hypothesis:linky
If the update caused the problem, is there anything I can do? If I call support again and suggest that the new update caused my system to die, am I any more likely to get better help?

Fortunately they became more stable over time. Remember when some PS2s couldn't read blue-bottomed discs?
Yeah those were the cd disks. I went through a few ps2's purely because of laser issues and not feeling confident enough to replace the laser.
Same here. At the time, I wasn't terribly well-informed either, so I could only speculate on the problems.
