Complain about that. That's absolutely unacceptable.

Seriously man, call and complain. Maybe if it was just dirty, that would be one thing, but if there's physical damage to it, that's not something I would accept.

I did. I was told "Wipe it off and buy a new faceplate. We luvs yer moneez!"

Tell them spending more money to get a non-broken console is unacceptable. Ask to talk with a supervisor. If he/she won't do anything, ask to speak with their supervisor. And so on, and so on.

This. Posting shit on Consumerist frequently gets results. Might work with M$oft as well.

As for me, less than 24-hour turnaround on my unit from the time it arrived to them and it heading back to me via UPS. Should be back early next week. Not sure if this means it was an easy problem to fix, or if they just snagged a refurb off the shelf and threw it in the box. Doesn't matter, I guess, as long as the one I get isn't all fucked up. I do like that I get a brand new 1 year warranty, however.

My first (launch) 360 was on its last legs when it was stolen a few years ago. The DVD drive was going out.

My second 360, an Elite, just threw an E74 error and apparently I have to send it in for repairs. I don't know if it's going to be worth the time or trouble and I'm thinking about just buying an "Arcade" model and swapping in the HDD.

Anyone have an opinion as to what I should do here? I'm not really hurting for money I guess, but I don't want to just throw away $200.

I've had 3 "repaired" consoles break on my, 2 RRODs, 1-Wouldn't output in SD.

Also I don't think the E74 error/RRODs are covered by the 3yr warranty from the day they instated the warranty, instead from the day you bought the console --- so you're screwed if you didn't play the 360 much and had it RROD on you now.

I got a lot of use out of it. the MS website just had me print a packing label and had a box that said $0 even though it also said that the warranty was expired. So whatever. I'll throw it in a box, send it out and maybe pick up an arcade model that I can pop in my HDD and keep playing. If I get my current box back and it works I'll either return the arcade box or I guess give it away to someone.

The expired warranty is the full warranty against all defects. The fact that your E74 came up as $0 to repair indicates you do have time left on the 3 year RROD warranty. The same exact thing happened to my pro.

When you get your system (or a replacement) back, you'll have a brand new 1-year full warranty again, by the way.

I'm sending out my console to get its disk drive repaired out of warranty. I just got the box to send it in today and I took off the front panel and a corner of the warranty sticker has started to come off, is that going to be a problem? the xbox as it is right now can't read disks and overheats after an hour. I'm wondering if I should get a refund from microsoft on the repair, trade in some games and buy a new arcade?

They go by manufacture date if you don't have a receipt. Granted you can still read the serial number.

I just went through a two day ordeal trying to get my xbox repaired. It finally goes through and I'm greeted to this.

Error: Unable to retrieve the UPS Label information. Please check the retrieval link. ( Error Code: 0 )

...in all fairness, UPS' shipping codes retrieval screw up constantly, whether through the entire website, or just a specific code.

Well I just called Microsoft. They told me to check it on xbox.com. When I had troubles logging in the Rep called it a "shitty website - oops excuse me". After I was able to sign in I checked the shipping label on Xbox.com. It gave me a red X. The rep then made a new repair request. I checked again, still a red x.

The rep then asks "May I have your password to your account so I can log in and check if that is the case here"

I firmly said no. They are now mailing me a shipping label.

Who said you get a brand new 1-year warranty? Refurbs are only good for 90 days.

From Microsoft's post service warranty info page
If we repair your Xbox 360 within the original warranty period, you will receive either the balance of your original warranty, or 90 days, whichever is longer. In addition, we will pay for the shipping both ways.

If we repair your Xbox 360 after the warranty period has expired, while you will be responsible for the repair costs, you will receive either the balance of your original warranty (if it has not yet expired for all conditions), or one year, whichever is longer.

EDIT: Just checked my warranty status. Seems you are right. Somewhat confusing language here, as we're dealing with two distinct warranty periods - the original one year on all parts, and the three year RROD warranty. So you could have your one year warranty expired, which would seem to trigger the second paragraph, but no. Three year RROD coverage counts even though the info page may have said "warranty expired." You get a free repair, you get the 90 day. Still, free repair. I'll take it.

I have a question. How much space is "well ventilated"? I have a small tv stand that gives the xbox 360 about 4-5 inches on either side when laid down. Is this enough? the tv stand is made of wood vinyl, and the front of the stand is completely open to air, and the back has about 3-4 inches of space from the wall. Do I need to have my power supply that well ventilated as well? Do I need the HDMI wires well ventilated (the last one was a joke)? I really don't feel like having my Xbox RROD out on me.

That sounds like a good amount of space. If you can get it up like an inch or so with blocks or something, that would help too.

    My solution:
    360rack1.jpg
    Ignore the dust.

    360rack2.jpg
The rack on top to show off the set up.

As long as you get the one that has an independent power supply and doesn't draw on the 360's power, it's fine.

Mines crapped out once. Sent it in, 4 days later got a refurbished one back. No problems since.
Also bought one of the Pro models for $200.00 about a year ago for whenever the refurbished one craps out. So far it might be a while.

I think I'm gonna sell them both and use the cash towards the COD Xbox that's coming out. I need a bigger HDD and I refuse to pay $150.00 for a 120 gig HDD when I can get one 10x the size for a pc for half as much.

Well I just got a combonation of errors. I was getting the single flashing light and I unplugged my power cable and unplugged the power supply from the wall. The Xbox worked for a little bit but it proceeded to have the 3 flashing lights show up.

I dont even play it that often. The most I play it is on Guitar Hero nights at my house and those are staggered with my buddies house who has Rock Band.

So I have now gone through one 360. It is just barely one year old too.

Hmmmm...A friend from work got a 360 off of eBay a couple months ago and complained that it was freezing up quite a bit. He also said that he didn't really like the games that he had played. Jokingly, I told him that I would take it. Well, he gave it to me. So, I just plugged it in and get this very same error. On the back of the console it has a manufacture date of 2009-02-13, so in that respect, I'm guessing that it would normally be covered by warranty, however, he and another guy I work with, decided to take it apart and see if they could figure out what was wrong with it, thus voiding any remaining warranty. Furthermore, I received this XBox in pieces and had to put it back together. Before doing so, however, I decided to blow some of the dust out. In doing that, I noticed that it looks like a liquid had been spilled all over it.

Seeing as how it's more than likely not covered by warranty, and also the fact that I didn't pay for it, is it worth taking this thing to someone on Craigslist to see if they can fix it?

So... Is the E74 error RROD? I got the E74 on Tuesday of last week, and everywhere I've read it's the RROD, but I only got one ring..?

No, it's a different error, but it's still covered under the same 3-year extended warranty the RROD is.

Isn't that the "Uknown error" which keeps popping up all the time that nobody really knows what it's about, including MS?

Technically the RROD is also that. It signifies a 'general hardware failure', and it could be anything.

Pull the HDD and see if you can track down a Arcade bundle.
    Probably cheaper that way.

    Yeah, I thought about that...

I only ask because I've seen a number of repair services on Craigslist saying that they do all repairs for $25-$45. I just don't know if that would be very reliable.

Got my first RROD last night, on a Pro (manf. date of 12/2007) with a Falcon chip and HDMI output. I've had the thing 20 months and never had a problem until it RROD'd last night. Off to Microsoft this morning.

Anyone know if they'll repair it, or just send me a new one?

Now I must wait to complete Fallout 3. Grrr.
