I have a question. How much space is "well ventilated"? I have a small tv stand that gives the xbox 360 about 4-5 inches on either side when laid down. Is this enough? the tv stand is made of wood vinyl, and the front of the stand is completely open to air, and the back has about 3-4 inches of space from the wall. Do I need to have my power supply that well ventilated as well? Do I need the HDMI wires well ventilated (the last one was a joke)? I really don't feel like having my Xbox RROD out on me.
That sounds like a good amount of space. If you can get it up like an inch or so with blocks or something, that would help too.
My solution:
Ignore the dust.
The rack on top to show off the set up.
I do the same sort of thing. I store my 360 in my entertainment center when not in use. When it's being played, I pull it out of the entertainment center and place it on a metal baking rack which keeps it off the ground.

So my first 360 just died in the middle of an RE5 game. Three red rings came up, so I turned it off, prayed to Loki and then tried a different game about five minutes later. No dice.
I'm in the UK, and the machine is about 20 months old. Should I bother sending it in for repairs or should I just bite the bullet, buy a new one and transfer the HD contents? If it's the former, is the process simply requesting a repair on the website and then shipping the thing off myself?

My 360 (purchased Sept/07, 20GB pro) started freezing a week or so ago after I picked up NHL 10. Now it freezes when I play XBLA games with the wireless adapter disconnected and I finally saw red rings this morning. So it's off this week. I guess I'm playing more Wii and PS2 games for a while.
My 360 crashed about a year and a half after I got it. E74 (think it was that). At that time it wasn't covered in the extended warranty so they wanted a hundred bucks to repair it. I bought an arcade and shoved the HDD in it. About two weeks later they extended the warranty to encompass E74.
What is the best way to get all my stuff from my current 20GB 360 to my new future 250GB 360? Other then saves I would like to have, is everything cool to just redownload again or is there that issue where I can't use it unless I am on live?

You can redownload. I think you can also call Microsoft and request a hard drive transfer cable, which might be easiest.

I read you can ask them for one for free but you have to supply the serial numbers. I don't know what my future one will be and I don't want to have to wait a couple weeks after I get it either.
So people have already mentioned Microsoft trying to avoid sending boxes out to people, and my customer service rep just told me that they no longer do that. Does anyone know if there was a recent policy change, or was the rep dicking with me?
Has anyone had a box shipped within the last two months?
If you want a box all you have to do is say that the online shipping label will not work. Just tell them you get the famous Red X for missing picture. They'll send you out a box no problem. The online system is so horribly broken I don't blame you for wanting a box.
Otherwise the rep wasn't dicking you around. They want everyone to send their own box and use the online method.

Mine just RRoD'd last night. I filled out the request form and a box is already shipped. Should be here tomorrow. Glad I bought a PS3 the night before.
Does anyone know what kind of consoles they're sending out now? (like what motherboard, HDMI, etc...)

But they can mail me a label only, I don't see how I can use that as my reason for a box.

I got a brand new one back with HDMI. I don't know what motherboard but I assume it's a new one that came out.

Awesome. Now I hope this will all be taken care of before MW2. And I just found out my Live subscription runs out this month too. :P

Just sent mine today. Chances I'm going to get a newer model?

You'll get a month free card when you get your xbox back, so that'll be nice.

Unless it's a special circumstance, and you get a brand new unit, you'll be getting back the exact same "gen" of 360 that you sent in. This is because of the power brick.
My launch system red-ringed probably three months ago, and I was literally apathetic towards the whole situation. I didn't want to send Microsoft money to fix something that shouldn't have broken in the first place, and I was all argh-argh-rabble-rabble about them not covering my launch system anymore.
I opened that bastard up, did the penny/XClamp/Towel Trick trifecta, and bam, works like a charm. :^:
Well, when I say 'works like a charm', that's with the knowledge that the fans run so loud, it sounds like a goddamn lawnmower in my room.

Blargh, well you can count me down for one dead due to RRoD. 06/2007-10/2009 Nevar Forget.
So i know they don't ship coffins anymore unless you have problems but i wanna make sure i've got everything down before i send it in. Keep the HD, and my console or any one they send back should still work fine with my saves and DLC and arcade games unless they didn't transfer the console license then i can call in and bitch and get it fixed sometime in the near future or use my once a year transfer.
Anything else i'm missing about this process?
Man, I have no idea where i'm gonna get a box for this.
Mine's supposed to be delivered today. Total turnaround time of about 2 weeks, which isn't bad. But I'm anxious to see which model they're sending me back. My dead Pro was built in Dec. 2007; I hope to hell the one they're sending me was built more recently than that.

I lost my first 360 right after Halo Wars had come out. It was "repaired" and sent back within three weeks. Customer Service was very nice, and though there was a slight problem with my address, it was quickly rectified.
Of course, I'd rather if I didn't have to go through with that shit at all, but it wasn't too bad.
I'm on my first one. That is, I was until it red-ringed 3 years and 1 month after I bought it. Warranty status: expired. $100 to fix this or get a new one? Hmm.
Based on the experiences I see in this thread, I'll probably be better off getting a new Box. I have looked at websites about fixing the thing myself, but should I really bother?
I saw what looks like a decent deal from Best Buy for this:
I could sell my broken Box and controller on Ebay and enjoy the 250GB on this Elite. I just hope the Box
in this Collector's Edition package has the new motherboard. I have not yet decided on what to do.

You know you want to.
I do. However, I will be deep into Borderlands (for the PC) when I get this, and I do not do well with 2 games vying for my attention. Both FPSers too. Gah.
The sensible part of me just says to stop it with XBox for now and play console games on my PS3.

That's reasonable. I'm only getting it because I'm getting nervous about how loud my box is getting lately and was probably buying an Elite soon anyway.

Just go online or call them, it's pretty simple.

Almost nil. I sent my launch unit back recently and didn't even get one with HDMI.

A lot of places compact their boxes though, so even if they say they don't have any, they might not necessarily be a dick.
My box made it to Dallas TX already. Hopefully the wait time is closer to the min.
