Since shitty Vista is ruining my otherwise awesome vaio notebook, I would like to install XP on it instead. I've been doing reading and what with the SATA drives it is a bit complicated, but I thought I had figured it all out. Finally, I copied all the contents of the Windows XP disk and attempted to load it in Nlite, and I got the error:
"Unknown Windows version, please report."
uhhh, it's just a regular winxp cd with sp2. There's nothing strange about it, so I have no idea why this is happening. Help?
The only reason I see that you're using nLite is to make a bootable ISO with SATA drivers slipstreamed. You should just be able to use the disc you're ripping the XP install off of, otherwise I've got no other choice but to claim you've got an illegal copy of windows. That might not be your fault, but it will certainly cause you problems.
The reason I'm using nlite is to make a bootable iso with SATA drivers slipstreamed in. I have a new (less than a year) vaio, and I've attempted this with THREE DIFFERENT copies of winxp professional w/ sp2. They're all fully legal copies.
I've copied the files from the disk manually and through nlite, and I still get the same error regardless of which cd I use.
edit: mustacio jones: are you saying I can slipstream the drivers onto the winxp cd itself? that would be great if i could..
I'm not sure how well it'll work, but yes. On the page where you select or deselect the menus you want to go through, it lists the ability to add Drivers to the install package.
You'd probably be better off with the drivers on a separate disc and just install XP without changing anything. Don't bother trying to slipstream, because it doesn't always work right.
Then is it possible to install xp, then install the SATA drivers afterwards (like, when I'm at the desktop?)
Everything I read to this point told me that the SATA drivers must be installed during the xp installation at the F6 menu, otherwise XP will not boot right. Is this incorrect?
Again, what I've read on the internets suggests that the only way to install the drivers at the f6 menu is with a floppy disk. Of course my new laptop doesn't have this dead technology
I was unable to find anything that said you can install the sata drivers by cd...unless they're slipstreamed onto the os cd.
Well, for what it's worth, I have a single SATA drive on my system and I don't think I did anything special during install. I think I just ran it the way I always do.
EDIT: Though I didn't have any pre-existing data on mine.

Aside from possibly having to tap F6 and tossing in a drivers disk for the SATA drivers what is stopping you?
