I wasn't sure if I should post in H/A or here, but I figured they were tech related so here would be best.
1: Can anyone reccommend me a good music player that isn't itunes, realplayer, or winamp/win media player?
Does such a thing exist? I'm running XP.
2: I think I asked this once before, but it's been so long I don't remember. If I did, I apologize. I'm looking to convery all of my .wma files to .mp3. Is there a good converter where I can just queue up all my .wmas and let it run overnight?
3: I have nero7 and for some reason (lately) when burning CDs (either data or audio) it has been randomly renaming tracks. Can anyone think of a reason it may be doing this, or alternatly, is there another program out there that I can burn stuff with that will not mess up?
Well the answer to your first question will be foobar2000. Lots of recommendations for foobar2000. Then some more recommendations for foobar2000. Also musikCube seems nice. Depends a bit on what you want in a media player... so maybe specify?

for the media player, I only really use it for music. I mean I have nero and wmp which both seem to work fine for video (I don't watch much on the computer). I just really don't like either for music.
MediaMonkey for music, if you care about rating songs, smart playlists and portable device synchronization.
dbPowerAmp is a great mass-converter, though you'll need to get the registered version to output to MP3, since the awful MP3 patent keeps you from distributing a free MP3 encoder.
As for CD burners, two good free ones I hear are ImgBurn and CD Burner XP. I've used ImgBurn and it works. CD Burner XP's interface looks a little bit friendlier, but I have yet to try it.

How do you get the "the" in band names not to register?
I see on the forums that "$swapprefix(X)" is the command to do it, but I have no idea where to put this little bit of text.
also, my keyboard has volume control/start/stop/skip tracks buttons on it that only work when I'm actually tabbed into the program. Anyway to fix it so those buttons work when I'm in another program?

YES! That is a beast for huge collections. In fact if your collection is very large at all it is almost a necessity. It is really nice if you are as obsessive compulsive as I am and EVERY music file you have must have the album, proper artist name, title and Album art. If will sniff all that stuff off of Amazon and tag it directly to the ID3 tag if you like. As far as getting it to work with a music player and are not worried about videos it is very nice.
I haven't tried many batch converters in the past couple of years, but NCH Switch does the trick. I think that some formats (including OGG) knock out after 30 days because it's sort of part freeware.
Just as a quick update, or fyi, or whatnot, I tried out foobar2000, songbird and mediamonkey, and have to say that mediamonkey blows the other two away for ease of use and compatability with my keyboard. The only oddity is that if I don't have the album art for a song it replaces the blank tile with the album art for Sufjan Stevens: Greetings from Michigan The Great Lakes State .... but I find it funny and don't really care hehe
also, CDBurnerXP works great
I haven't had a chance to use any of the format switchers, but I'll probably get on that this weekend
Also, check out dbpoweramp converter. it is free, optimized for multi-core processors, and is fucking great. It is great for converting huge batches of music while you sleep.
Once you download it, be sure to download new codecs. It will take you to a page where you can install more. Musepack, Ogg, FLAC, wma, Apple Lossless, etc, etc ...it has them all, and you can adjust the quality settings to your liking.
Honestly, my quad core fucking eats music for breakfast and asks for seconds with this thing.

thanks everyone!
Yeah what's happening is some other program like WMP is making a hidden system file called Folder.jpg in some folder with music in it. Mediamonkey will first look for embedded album art but if it can't find it it will look for a Folder.jpg in the same directory. I have not found out how to get MediaMonkey to ignore these so I generally try to delete them and avoid running WMP. There must be a better solution though.

Bringing this puppy back from the dead. I found out how to make MediaMonkey ignore the Folder.jpg. Go to Tools -> Options -> Library then uncheck "Scan track directories for Album Art". Then you'll need to remove all your songs from your library, then add them back in, to clear any associated album art. The ratings are kept on the files so they will stay even after you do the remove and re-add.

2: BonkEnc will do the job perfectly, but you'll need the WMA input plugin from Winamp.
3: To hell with Nero. CDBurnerXP FTW!

I liked it so much I actually paid for it.
SongBird will be very cool when it is finished!

:^: good music there.
I like KMPlayer but it doesn't sound like it suits your needs for album management and what-not.
