I put the prefetch fix in, and it seems that my game likes to skip graphically, every few steps.
So I deleted the gamedata folder with the mods, and I think I fucked it -- mods won't install anymore. Was my first problem from a lack of prefetching? And can I make mods work again?
Steam version, btw.
Are you using Stolls mod pack? If so then all you have to do is just extract the mods again and it will create it's own gamedata folder. Also prefetching is a known cause of memory leaks so that's why there's a fix for it. What do you mean by skip graphically? And what's your video card?
If you're not using Oblivion Lost, you should be using the Weather Overhaul mod. Make sure to use the brighter nights options or you can't see SHIT, but otherwise it's fantastic. It actually adds a sun that, get this, travels across the sky during the day from east to west. Amazing right? Considering the vanilla game just has the sun sorta appear and slowly fade at nighttime and doesn't move across the sky at all. You'll even get full shadows out of it, the orange sunset with huge shadows streaking across the ground is awesome.

It's a 7900GTX 512MB (about two years old). I can run on high/maximum with really no skips.
So I dunno why it started after I modded it. I'm gonna keep trying the mods and maybe do OL next. I want to love this game, dammit!

I was playing a mission where I had to fight with the freedom to kill some duty dudes
I killed every duty dude, kind of. I sat there for ten minutes and chilled while they duked it out, and then once the fighting slowed down I shot the rest of the duty guys.

Dx10 effects will be avaible for XP users as well so no worries about that. You won't find anything new in the leak btw, it's just what you could see on E3 and nothing more. (1+ year old)
The last one increases beam strength and distance, while light-23 has a slightly weaker beam, but a wider radius and a higher spot angle (85 degrees as opposed to 60). However, the glare coming from NPC flashlights doesn't seem to appreciably change from mod to mod, or in vanilla for that matter.
That's because it's a sprite, as in a 2d graphic Most light halo-type objects/FX in 3d games are sprites, since the rendering work necessary to create real ones is astronomically more computationally expensive than just faking it.
I figured it out. When using the shitty lighting option, the dynamic flashlights turn into huge white sprites that take over the whole screen like im staring at a white wall.
Second: OL is retarded on the hardest difficulty, it just spams you with mutants that can absorb crazy amounts of damage. I still prefer the second hardest
Third:So I started a new game and went to Dark Territory right after doing the bandit camp mission to see how I'll do. I help out the duty guy to rescue his friend, then I head around the NE side of the bandit camp, where the gas tanks are, since I usually come in from the pipes on the W side. I head into this building, and its empty, head upstairs, find a pile of bodies, hear a RAWR then proceed to get fucked up by a bloodsucker. Reload. I head back in, this time expecting the bloodsucker, so I walk backwards by the pile to see if it'll trigger him to spawn. Nothing shows up, I head back into the hallway to a door that leads to a balcony. I walk forward, then POW CLAWS IN THE FACE, and I gun his ass down.

So I just spent the last hour or so playing Stalker for the first time. It is great. I did that first mission for Wolf. Took me a couple tries then I went into OpFlash mode and that helped quite a bit. On my way back to the Wolf's camp I see some dudes off in the distance walking along the road in, what looked to me, a military fashion. Whether it was on purpose or coincident I thought it was cool. Anyway, I go to Wolf to get my reward and all of a sudden people in the camp start yelling in Russian and guns start firing.
Turns out those guys I saw earlier were military and they were fucking Wolf's dudes right up. I join in the fight with my new double barrel saw'd off. Which was quickly replaced by a fancy AK. Pretty much all of Wolf's men died, including Wolf, but we did kill all the soldiers and I got to loot twice as many corpses, so win/win for me. Now I have an armfull of AKs, Shotguns, pistols, ammo, med-kits, food, what-have-you. I feel awesome.
tl;dr
Stalker rocks and first hour of game was full of corpse looting.

General advice: sell off most of the AK's except the one you're carrying (you ought to carry the one that's in the best shape, it'll jam less), ditto for the handguns. Hopefully you'll soon replace that AK as well, or at least complement it. There are much better weapons out there.
The game doesn't really start to get interesting until you get to the bar, then it starts opening up a bit.
Don't spend anything on armour or buying weapons until you reach the bar and have accepted your first mission from the barkeep. He'll give you a free set of Stalker armour.
You playing with Stolls' pack or Vanilla? I'd recommend Stolls', it doesn't change the core gameplay, it just makes things more convenient and irons out some kinks in the game.

Playing with Stolls'. I'm not particularly sure what I should be doing now. I saved the Mole and I believe I have to navigate the tunnels under the ARI complex. I cleared out the bandits in there already, but uh, I do not wish to go further.

Hey, TIM JAMES, I'm building the same PC as you! we're PC BROTHERS!
And there is a set of bandit armor (better than that ugly newb coat) right in the noob village. You have to climb to to the roof of one of the houses then jump to another house. then you wallk on it's roof until you find a hole, where you can grab the armor.
My explanation sucks, but your can find better ones online, now that you know it exists.

Speaking of suspense,
Is it normal for there to only be two Controllers in all of the vanilla game?
They really scare you silly early on, but unlike most games they keep feeding the tension through atmosphere and very seldomly deliver actual monsters. Everyplace is creepy, like there's going to be a monster around every corner, but it rarely ever happens. I felt because of this, the anticipation was more effective. Well except for X16 and Yantar, they were crawling with Zombies and damned Snorks.
yeah there's only 2 of those guys, one in the tunnel and one in one of the lab areas.
When you get asked to clear out the bloodsuckers in the village outside of the Freedom camp, there is another one that shows up there.

I started a new game with Oblivion Lost and it quickly became clear that my Stalker was destined to be mauled by mutant dogs. The first mission, retrieving the flash drive from Nimble, was a disaster. The three guys I had with me got gunned down while I was fending of the dogs who came straight for me. I picked up a shotgun and managed to save the day, though. I got rid of the dogs and picked off the remaining bandits.
On my way back to the Garbage, I saw a corpse out in the field and decided to loot it. When I approached it, I was ambushed by more dogs and just for the hell of it, some bigass monster mutant dogs too. It was a hard fight and as I fired my last shotgun rounds, I saw a human moving towards me in the distance. Great, I thought, a fellow Stalker coming to aid me, but... he moves awfully slowly, doesn't he?
It turned out it was a fucking zombie! He was all bloody and messed up and I was truly creeped out when the bastard spoke in russian! In a panic, I emptied a clip in him and he went down. I went closer to loot him and then he sits up again! I gunned him down again and ran all the way back to the Garbage.
I left my Stalker sitting by the campfire, somewhat depressed by the fact that he only has 3 rounds left in the pistol and nothing at all for the shotgun. Bloody zombie...

Interesting, I don't think I got him.
Depends on which quest you do - I only got it when I did the 'clear out the bloodsuckers' from Lukash.

I went back to my last "Wadering Free" save from before I pressed on into Pripyat, turned around and went back to wandering The Zone. Well, with a few additional toys such as the Dragunovs and extra RPGs. I could probably collect a Flash Rifle if I wanted, but the odds are it wouldn't have any ammo, so there's no point.
I really need to do the bloodsucker village quests. I need more favor with the Freedom and Scientist traders specifically so I can unlock more of their goods. The scientists missions are easy enough, but Freedom I haven't even started with due to that damn village. I'm way better equipped now, so it's just a matter of courage
Do any traders eventually sell the Dragunov ammo in the vanilla game?
Well, I made my PC upgrade purchases! I'm a little disappointed because Newegg changed the free game deal from The Witcher to GRID overnight, but the former is only $20 used and should go down even more by September when the Enhanced Edition comes out. I never would have purchased GRID, so I guess there's that benefit.
Anyway, I'm ready for Clear Sky, Fallout 3, Far Cry 2, etc. Now if I only had more than 1 or 2 games on my backlog that could actually use all this horsepower before the holiday gaming season.

Well if you just got horsepower, I'm sure there's plenty of games we could recommend.
Off the top of my head, there's Crysis, Mass Effect, Bioshock, Gears of War, maybe throw in some Supreme Commander for variety (I know, polar opposite of CoH, but you might like it).

*something roars*
*a Controller calmly steps out from the doorway you came through, down the hall*
*psychic brainspanking ensues*
*a voice echoes at you from nowhere and everywhere all at once*
"S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is the only game you need. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Clear Sky. It is the will of the glorious Monolith!"
"Oh and the next time you go into The Zone, bring lots of vodka."
I am saving Crysis and Bioshock to replay until later. Right now I have FEAR, and I just bought Medal of Honor: Airborne for a few bucks (used) because I'm not yet burned out on mediocre WW2 shooters and it has a few nice effects. Need to borrow Call of Duty 4 from my cousin. I can crank GTR2 up a few notches; I wasn't maxed out during the races because the CPU was working on the AI. Same with Freespace 2 I think.
Waiting for Mass Effect to hit $20 on the used market, maybe a couple more months.
But if GSC delays Clear Sky, I will sob uncontrollably.
Make sure you pick up the AK-74SU in the attic of the house in the beginning stalker camp (usually there is some armor there but I think they changed it in OL). Unlike in the vanilla game, it actually is worth a damn in OL and is immensely helpful for the very beginning areas of Cordon and Garbage where supplies are extremely slim and not having a worthwhile weapon can be painful.
The merc armor is still in that crate where it always is. I couldn't do that damn scientist escort mission in my last playthrough, where you gotta follow him around while he gets readings. Instead most of the time he runs into the open and starts shooting zombies that are miles away then gets his ass capped when they decide to shoot back.

Can't say I can think of anything else that'll really tax your system at the moment.
For the time being at least, PC devs have recognised they don't really need to push the envelope for the time being (that's just pricing themselves out of the market for little really benefit at the moment). Also, We've largely reached the limit of what's capable on the consoles, so console ports probably aren't going to tax a high end system for a good few years now, at least until the next console generation comes into play.
I'd say this is actually quite a good time to have a high end system, it's likely to last you a while. Barring Crysis (and possibly the upcoming Clear Sky by the looks of things) there isn't likely to be much that's really going to push it.
Well then again, this is with AA and AF still off in most of the games I play, but realistically I see those as a heavy performance hit for little gain in the first place.

It's from the game. One of the campfire tales is that a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. goes to see a doctor:
"Doctor, I can't sleep, I always dream that I am locked in the Sarcophagus with monsters tearing me apart!"
"Oh, thats a controller doing that to you. But I know a remedy! Next time you go to deep inside the Zone, take a few bottles (of vodka) and give him them."
"Thank you Doctor, you cant imagine how much you helped me!"
"No, it's nothing" - said the controller - "and thanks for the 'doctor', by the way!"
(laughter)
Translations for much of the Russian dialogue here, with streaming clips of the original audio to listen to as you read. The one above is 'Audio Clip 11'.
It sounds like Clear Sky isn't going to be that taxing. They've stated (who knows if it's true) that they're just using an upgraded engine, and the minimum requirements are the same. Anyone that can play SOC should be able to play Clear Sky no problem.

Watch out, audio clip 17 is kind of a spoiler for the endgame. The text doesn't necessarily ruin anything, but hearing it would lower the impact I think.

I suppose so, but looking at some of the trailers it looks around Crysis / Far Cry 2 level.

Yep. I remember that guy. That ambush is in the vanilla version. The event was scary, but it felt so scripted that it broke the immersion a bit.
Turns out those guys I saw earlier were military and they were fucking Wolf's dudes right up. I join in the fight with my new double barrel saw'd off. Which was quickly replaced by a fancy AK. Huh. I never saw it happen randomly, but I took a mission from Wolf to help hold off a bunch of military guys. The outcome was the same, but I felt pretty terrible about it. No more Wolf. No more guitar playing. Just empty buildings.
I think there was one guy I befriended (a.k.a. used a med-kit on) that survived the game. He was in the warehouse in The Garbage. When I healed him he got up, went across the street, and sat down in a little bus depot. Eventually two other Stalkers joined him and they all took turns playing guitar. Every time I went through The Garbage they were still there, in a largely indefensible position, carrying crappy weapons; right next to a road. But no one ever came by and attacked them. So at least one person I saved stayed saved. That's providing the blowout didn't kill him. I was never in a position to watch a blowout, so I don't really know what they do / what their range is. The Garbage is pretty far away though. He was probably fine.

"...is that bloodsucker... wearing pants?" **MINDFUCK** "Ohhhhhhhh..."
Depends on which quest you do - I only got it when I did the 'clear out the bloodsuckers' from Lukash.

Anyway, I'm ready for Clear Sky, Fallout 3, Far Cry 2, etc. Now if I only had more than 1 or 2 games on my backlog that could actually use all this horsepower before the holiday gaming season.
Well if you just got horsepower, I'm sure there's plenty of games we could recommend.
Off the top of my head, there's Crysis, Mass Effect, Bioshock, Gears of War, maybe throw in some Supreme Commander for variety (I know, polar opposite of CoH, but you might like it).

(laughter)

I suppose so, but looking at some of the trailers it looks around Crysis / Far Cry 2 level.
Yep. I remember that guy. That ambush is in the vanilla version. The event was scary, but it felt so scripted that it broke the immersion a bit.
