I have to say my only real complaint about the beta so far are the power sets. There are simply too few, even when you consider there are two different branches for each type. Lack of costume options and the costume creation UI is rather sub-par as well but for some reason that doesn't bother me as much as I would have expected.
I like that you can switch your roll (DPS or Other) but I wish the devs would have taken it further by letting you be any roll regardless of powers. It would be rather simple to give some type of buff to every type of power based on the roll you chose and it would make the character creator seem more flexible.
I've never been a DC guy but just playing the game is making me want to read some of their comics so bravo on that.
Also I that there are a number of combat options related to your travel power. Nice touch.
I was originally annoyed by the lack of custome options in the creator but you get so many options from collecting items that I got over it right quick.
I am annoyed that I don't have a demonic style chest piece for my guy, even though the quest chain gave me every other part.
Shaky standard it seems, given the number of MMOs that are forsaking it for hybrid F2P models, or at the very least lower rates. I imagine DCUO is safe to do it simply because it's one of the rare console MMOs.
I've never understood the belief that the console market is just some great mass of money waiting to be tapped. I mean, is there really that large a portion of people that a) want to play an MMO, b) have the income for monthly fees and yet c) for some reason don't own a computer (but own the consoles that COST AS MUCH AS COMPUTERS)?
...yes? The console market is bigger than the PC market, yet there are far fewer MMOs to compete with. Don't see why believing those are both boons when releasing a console MMO is particularly controversial.
Yeah, but my point was if someone wanted to play an MMO, they would have. The belief that there are a ton of console gamers that just couldn't manage to play an MMO on PC despite their best efforts is kinda dumb. I highly doubt the console MMO-playing market (potentially) would beat out the PC MMO-playing market.
They're literally taking an MMO and going after the non-MMO playing market. I mean, that CAN work if you have like the best most awsomest product ever that is going to blow away the minds of people who normally wouldn't even look at the genre, but this is not that product nor could I see the developers ever pretending it would be.
Honestly, the ONLY reason that holds any weight whatsoever is 'there isn't any competition on consoles' which is a really crappy reason. Competition is a good thing when the product stands up for itself.
Astale, you're not really making sense. It seems like you're trying to say that only people without computers would play MMOs on a console. It also seems like you're trying to say that the people that play console games are not the people that play MMOs on the computer. You're also assuming that DCUO is a standard MMO, rather than the action game in a persistent online world that it is.
I don't think that Sony has set DCUO up to do well. At all. I doubt it will catch onto the PS3(Or even the PC) any more so than PSO did to the gamecube and whatever else it was on. But that is because of design and business choices, not because of a fundamental lack of audience.
I'm not saying they don't exist, I'm saying they're such a small market that you'd have to be a complete moron to try and base an MMO with any budget whatsoever on them as a target.
I don't think the design issues matter at all, it's already got that giant hurdle in front of it. If you're going after the console market, you're going after it because there isn't any competition, and there isn't any competition because all your competitors looked at the market and decided not to bother. Perhaps sony thinks they know something everybody else doesn't?
So I just played through the tutorial for the beta and found myself thinking that this felt more like a console action game than a PC MMO.
I was completely unaware that it was coming to consoles too. And I see, nope, only PS3. Despite getting a beta invite ages ago I didn't bother installing it till last night and I haven't payed attention to news at all aside from that awesome trailer awhile back. Without baiting a stupid argument, has there been any reason given why it's not coming to the 360?

I believe you get the chest piece at some point. Maybe from a related quest line or from one of the chests in the instances related to it? I remember I ended up with all the pieces except the pants for a while and then I got it from another quest later on.

Maybe a reward for finishing an investigation? I know I missed part of one of them.
except that the only button icons they use are the playstation's and it can be a bit disorienting if you're using a 360 controller
Ehh, maybe a little, but I've played enough PS and Xbox games (and console games in general) that I don't really see X, Circle, Square, and Triangle so much as bottom button, right button, left button, and top button.
Luckly, it's the same buttons for the 360 controller :P
Yeah, the buttons are the same just with different labels. Not hard at all. Now switching back and forth from SNES and Genesis? That was rough. fucking c buttons and shit.

So i've been playing this a bit more, and now that the new game shine has worn off, i'm not entirely sure it's going to do well at release.
There's just not enough there to qualify it as a PC MMO. Or a MMO, really. This gets really freaking obvious as you get to the end-game.
It's like Champions Online at release (Which is actually pretty good now, barring the lack of content updates since...Four months ago. Those dudes seriously need to up their rate of production. A F2P Update does not constitute hard content, no matter what few abilities come with it.), sans the ability to lose two months of your life in the character editor.
Then again, maybe the fact that it's a DC game will carry it through. I'm not certain even that's a good thing, though.
I should mention that alot of the end-game armors are the same. Meaning that this game is really, really, less like CoX or CO, and more like WoW at the end-game in regards to customization. While you can toggle the armor visuals off and use your own, I suspect that alot of folks won't do that.
Also, outside of the end-game Superman armor (Which looks badass.), alot of the armors look flat fucking atrocious, and won't mesh well with alot of character concepts.
How do you know what the endgame is like when the beta cap is at 20?
People have posted about it on the beta forums, and the actual armors you can earn are on display right now.
Just go to the Watchtower or League of Doom HQ, and look for those mannequins. The ones that have armor on them are end-game armors for your class (Meta, tech, magic.). I think there's about three per class that you can choose from.
Those armors are the best thing in the game thus far. Unfortunately, they're also based off of a popular hero or villain. Superman gets some sort of steel "I'll fuck you up ten times over." badass warlord style armor. Joker gets an absolutely ugly "demonic" look, etcetera, etcetera.
I've done some end game content and I've found it fun but not highly replayable (although I've always despised the whole raiding concept behind MMOs so I think its just not "for me"). My favorite thing is Duos. You redo missions that you've done previously with only one other person in your group, except everything is a lot harder and there is a miniboss usually.
For example, the Hive instance you do around level 8 or so (not the alert on the moon). There are many different types of enemies that present new challenges and the miniboss is Booster Gold who is hypnotized by the Queens pollen. The main boss fight is slightly similar, but a lot more difficult with more adds spawning and since they are harder to kill they will usually get turned into her drones.
As far as the end game armor goes- They dont fit every character concept, but they have versatile pieces that can look good in certain combinations. For instance, I saw this dude a few pieces of the dr fate (omg the back slot item) mixed with other items and it looked so great and unique.

Nonono, I'm not talking about the armor, I'm talking about this comment.

Which makes it sound like you've play the level cap content and found it lacking, which I find odd since the cap is currently only 20. I already knew about the armors on display (and agree that yes, beyond a small handful of them, most of them belonging to heroes, they do not look very desirable)

Well, I've yet to see a single person on either side with a higher level than 20, and there is an anouncment on the DCUO forums talking about how the cap was raised to 20, with no further memo about it going any higher, so... Weird
I knew there were other servers, but I though they were for the devs and hired testers, not those who got in before the NDA dropped.

Hmm, so I put my code into the site, created my Station account, so now how do I get the client? My account info says my DCUO subscription is pending? Do they email you with the download after a bit or something?

Also my response to the game: Needs more of everything, more powers, more costume choices (hell some of the ones they have now are ripped from City of Heroes and Champions, why not steal ALL of the choices), I like the game, but I don't know if it works well as an MMO. Like I would have really enjoyed this as a single player game, you make a dude, follow a storyline and get to work with some DCU characters at the same time.
You are. If you look at the email they sent you, there's a link you follow. Log in there and you can download. Probably got confused since I believe if you don't have a station account, once you create one, it won't take you to the original page you were trying to view, which is the download page.

I'm pretty okay with the costume (and, to be honest, really only the costume, more size/hair/skin choices please!) choices you have at Character Creation, since hunting for more costume options seems to be one of the things they are using to keep you in, which isn't a bad thing, as they are dishing out new stuff that you couldn't find in the Creator as early as the tutorial...
...and when you realize that DC characters (at least the ones you fight at the end of the SP mission arcs) can give up thier own costume pieces as rare loot drops... your gonna have a lot of people runing through that stuff more than you'd think.
I don't want to find my costume, though. I want to design it. Superheroes aren't the same as sword & sorcery heroes, where finding and then using fancy armor and weapons is a huge part of the overall feel and lore. Superhero costumes are different from that. They're meant to be a fancy representation of the hero's powers and personality, not a symbol of their conquests. Designing a character's visual look is a much bigger draw in a superhero MMO than it is in something like WoW.
I enjoy this game but the customization is sorely lacking, both when it comes to costumes and to powers. Champions had an awesome system that let you mix and match everything(within a set of reasonable rules) to make tons of unique characters. This game feels far too restrictive after playing that.
It's also mystifying how there's no power/bruiser/Hulk power set. You can't just be a power guy, you have to be a power guy who is also a psychic or who uses gadgets or who lights on fire.
If they could combine the gameplay and setting with Champions' customization, I would be in heaven.
Thought I'd mention this. About Ambush Bug and the Vault.
When you get your first ticket and finish the quest, he says to talk to him to receive another ticket once per day. Well, it doesn't work like that at the moment. Rather, you go to the instance tab (the one that's shown as a fist when you bring up the menus). From there, hit vaults and you can go in once a day for loot. I've only gotten clothing pieces from it, some pretty cool, got the Flash Shirt (exactly what it is called) last night.
He mentions a multi use ticket but I haven't heard of a way to get it and assume it isn't in yet.

Never gonna happen... Well, maybe they'll add more customization options for character creation (and honestly, I do hope for that too), and I belive they already talked about expanding the power sources beyond the current 6 (I think you can even find leftover files in the beta program of some that were cut for launch,) but your not going to have the freedom of power selection as you did in ChO.
Why? Because unless your willing to let players be unable to advance the content because they picked a tacticly horrible set of powers, Picking any power you want and having the content be fun and challenging without being a cakewalk are mutually exclusive. Champions Online pretty much proved that: outside PvP and some of the group instance content, any realistic attempts at optimizing your character let you faceroll through anything since everything was balenced to the only things they could be sure you had: the first two powers you started out with. I seriously think the only times I felt threaten or challenged playing Champions outside of the arenas was when I was either attempting content that was beyond my level or soloing something meant for more than one player, and I was playing characters that had powers in 2 or more trees before I got out of the first crisis zone. And now, a little over a year after going Live, ChO is preparing to go F2P.
So yeah, hope they add more options for visual costomization, expect them to add more powers asap, but I'm willing to retire my ChO main Gadget/PA/electric heroine or my fire/ice alt if it means I get a good, even challenge out of the content.

I got a Bizzaro Hat (literally a baseball cap with the Bizzaro symbol on it)
What makes it even more awesome, and a bit funny, was that this was on my obvious Superman knockoff Character- I literly just hit inspired by Superman, change a couple of clothing options, named her, and hit okay. :P

Being in the beta test for the F2P CO (all us lifetimers got in automatically) they've actually gone back and made archetypes they can balance the game around. Only problem is 1) the ATs are VERY restrictive so you get barely any choice at all and 2) subbing customers are the same as always and can just steamroll through content with a few wise power choices. They can't just up and take away the freedom to take whatever you want from those people who've already been playing, so I don't think the problem is fixable at this point. The AT thing might fix it, sorta, for the free players, but free players don't exactly keep the game going.
Honestly CoX does it best. Plenty of powers, plenty of sets, reasonable customization/combinations. It's why I wish they'd get off their butts and make CoX2 already, since it's real problem is the aging engine (and you can't patch that).

Bounty PvP missions are now available. These missions can be received from Bounty and Wanted Posters outside all Nightclubs and Police Stations by players’ level 10 or higher. To complete them you have to defeat five players of the opposing faction, no more than five levels lower than yourself. Bugs:
Group members will no longer have secure icons remain overhead.
Multiple Gender and Shape Changing Bug Fixes:
All localized text related to a character will use the gender of that character's unchanged form. For example, Jane, a female character playing as Batman in a Legends simulation doing a /shake emote will show up in the chat log as "Jane shakes her fist."
Shape changes that automatically switch to male or female versions based on the gender of the person being changed will now use the unchanged gender, instead of gender of the current form they are in, so the evil toy shape change on a female character will always be the girl toy form, even if that was used while in a male form (like nature gorilla or wolf forms).
The correct, unchanged gender will be used when adding a new style of an item to a character's style list.
Female characters reverting out of a male shape change form and not wearing a shirt over a skin type that requires a bra will correctly wear the sports bra. Fixed a bug where male characters not wearing a shirt reverted out of a female shape change form and incorrectly tried to force them to wear a sports bra. Because of a related bug, this situation used to cause a server crash.this is just an hilarious bug I wanted to point out

Items:
Fixed a bug where a vendor would either not let you repair a damaged item from your inventory or would appear to leave damaged items in the repair list after doing a repair all (though the item would actually be repaired).
The tokens used to purchase battlesuits are now called “Marks” instead of “Brands.”
Some items now use different styles.
Vault gifts now have a small chance to award Vault tickets and Marks of Distinction.
Fixed purchasable items show as can not be purchased
Some style names have changed.
Most precision stat bonuses on items have been reduced.
Some weapon styles have been replaced.
Normal NPC treasure drop rates have been adjusted.
Many items and styles have been renamed.
Items that are purchased with Influence and Marks now additionally require normal cash.
All iconic battlesuits should now have the appropriate origin restrictions.
The Greco-Roman and New Genesis styles are now available in the Vault.
Some race reward emblems did not award the appropriate styles, and now they do.
Most of it is some tweaking, but a few are pretty awesome. Finally being able to tell what buffs are on is great.
Edit: While its downloading I'm looking at the forums and apparently while you're in the 'style area' (I don't know if that's the style tab or a part of the watchtower/hall of doom), you can change your costumes pallete and indicidual colors, just like if you were still in the creator. As well as being able to lock in individual gear slots so they don't change the look when you equip items. So that's cool.

yes this is true. it's an awesome addition, really. any new costume piece you pick up, you can re-color to your heart's content. also includes recoloring skin/hair/eyes as well.
and locking costume slots means you can equip anything you'd like and it won't affect your look. or you could just unlock your glove and back slots and have only them change.

Rubber bullets.
Honest.
Also I
I am annoyed that I don't have a demonic style chest piece for my guy, even though the quest chain gave me every other part.
Weird.
I don't think that Sony has set DCUO up to do well. At all. I doubt it will catch onto the PS3(Or even the PC) any more so than PSO did to the gamecube and whatever else it was on. But that is because of design and business choices, not because of a fundamental lack of audience.
I was completely unaware that it was coming to consoles too. And I see, nope, only PS3. Despite getting a beta invite ages ago I didn't bother installing it till last night and I haven't payed attention to news at all aside from that awesome trailer awhile back. Without baiting a stupid argument, has there been any reason given why it's not coming to the 360?

I guess Sony want to keep exclusivity.
I want to know more PA people on Twitter.

Use a wired controller, if you're playing on the pc.
Keyboard and mouse are fine, but if you pick up a PS3/360 controller, its much more entertaining.
Maybe a reward for finishing an investigation? I know I missed part of one of them.
Ehh, maybe a little, but I've played enough PS and Xbox games (and console games in general) that I don't really see X, Circle, Square, and Triangle so much as bottom button, right button, left button, and top button.
Luckly, it's the same buttons for the 360 controller :P
Weird
Servers for preorders and the people they let in the past couple weeks, according to the forums.
I knew there were other servers, but I though they were for the devs and hired testers, not those who got in before the NDA dropped.

13GB, damn
Why wasn't I provided a way to download it?

I'm pretty okay with the costume (and, to be honest, really only the costume, more size/hair/skin choices please!) choices you have at Character Creation, since hunting for more costume options seems to be one of the things they are using to keep you in, which isn't a bad thing, as they are dishing out new stuff that you couldn't find in the Creator as early as the tutorial...
...and when you realize that DC characters (at least the ones you fight at the end of the SP mission arcs) can give up thier own costume pieces as rare loot drops... your gonna have a lot of people runing through that stuff more than you'd think.

Because of a related bug, this situation used to cause a server crash. this is just an hilarious bug I wanted to point out
You can no longer send mail to yourself.
