It hasn't died yet, There are still at least 3-4 master servers, and about 500 or more people playing. I'm wondering if anyone else is still playing or have they all moved on to the newest games.

What is Starsiege: Tribes, you ask?

Well Wiki can tell you.

If that doesn't work, Tribes is the most awesome thing ever.

It's a multiplayer FPS from Dynamix, published by Sierra.

Tribes implements a basic class system, involving three main classes.

Heavy(ARMOR! LOTS! Big explosive weapon, too.)
Medium(Moar liek Mario in SSB, mirite?)
Light(Fucking slow down, dammit. Also sniper rifle all up ins)

It also implements the best weapon ever: The Stormhammer(/Spinfusor/whatever the hell so many names)

What's this skiing faggotry?

In Tribes, players can remove friction from themselves by tapping jump a lot. This is awesome, so awesome that in later games they made it a feature.

I prefer Tribes to Legion just because it's actually playable on my system. I'd be up for a game if the OP specified a time and we got a decent team going.

Also, it apparently won't run on Vista without this patch. (Which I have not tested. Use at your own risk, etc, etc.)

After reading Penny Arcade in it's entirety and becoming interested in the game, I was perfectly prepared to torrent Tribes and beat it over the head with my keyboard until I could work it online, but I never thought a link would be provided in this very thread! And legal, at that!

I still playy Tribes to this very day. I have played it since it came out, not nonstop, but plenty. It is the best game ever made. It is better than Tribes 2. It is better than Tribes: Vengeance. It is better than Fallen Empire: Legions. It is SO GOOD.

Man, games must have really been dumbed down from what they were in the 90's for me to not have any fucking idea what I'm doing in Tribes. I've played about 2 games and still don't know what's going on. I think we're supposed to be capping some flags, and we have vehicles and rockets, and I can yell CRAP over and over again on the radio.

There's some kind of class feature but they all have the exact same Disc Launcher/Plasmagun/other weapon set. On a few levels I don't even know how to get out of my team's base. Jesus, I must be going soft from all this Source bullshit I've been playing.

Also, there are rockets fucking EVERYWHERE. Has this game fallen to the same fate as Halo on the PC, where everyone plays the Final Destination equivalent map with nothing but rockets or sniper rifles and no shields, or has it always been like this?

The first time I played Tribes, I spent thirty minutes trying to get through that first tutorial where you use the jetpack to climb up a bunch of platforms.

Granted, it was one of my first FPSes, but the tutorial is not for sissies.

I really didn't understand what skiing was supposed to look like at all until I saw something like this on YouTube. It's much less impressive than another one was was floating around that was nothing skiing, but I think this also conveys the general sense of it.

I still can't really ski. :-(

In Tribes the disc launcher (which I assume is what you mean by rockets) is your basic weapon. It's not the same as the rocket launcher in Halo at all.

I've said this a million times on this forum. I played tribes for what felt like the majority of my teenage life. I was damn good at that game.

If I pick it up, I will lose even more time. But... I suppose if all the PAers have decided to get together and play on a server (as long as it isn't shifter or any variant of renegades) I'll gladly jump on in.

Also: I used to have a voice pack that could say all the best things in tribes.

Tribes 2 is still free; GameSpot just isn't hosting it or dispensing CDKEYs anymore. LAN play over Hamachi would work, but Tribes 1 is supposed to be better anyway.

I spent about 10 minutes trying to use the exploding spin discs to propel myself around the map ala TF2 before I realized that I had a speed boost I could use to shoot myself over hills.

This game is all right, but it shows it's age a LOT.

I dunno, the lack of voicechat hampers my ability to work with other people.

I also get sniped a fuckton when I get within half a mile of the other guy's base, no matter how fast I'm speeding around using NATURE RAMPS.

I want to like this game, I really do, but there are so much more entertaining and functional things for me to be playing that I don't see the point. Mabye I just had to have played it back when to get it.

Ahh Tribes, the first FPS I ever played online against others and completely failed at until Quake 3 came out.

God, I was so good at using the modded "Turret Killer" sniper rifles in T1.

Usually, I'd go to a spot on the map (BROADSIDE, MOTHERFUCKERS) where I could only see darking, shifting outlines of enemies. And charge up.

The last thing they would see if a blue and purple bolt of energy, and I'd watch their bits and pieces fall from the heavens.

So after a good hour of playing on a renegades server (one of the few with people on at this hour), I finally remember why I quit after the years of playing.

This is one of the few games I take way to seriously. It's so easy to get wrapped up in the joy of skiing across the trench in raindance, flying up the other side, sending out some sniper shots, grabbing the enemy flag, then making a mad dash back fleeing for your life from the uber chainguns of doooom (thanks scripts!).

I'm happy to remember though that I haven't been seeing this game through rose-tinted glasses and it is still that awesome.

I have a full size Starsiege:Tribes box, with manual and everything, I think it's in almost perfect condition too.. tribes 2 was my favourite of the series I think, simply because it polished and fixed everything (after enough freaking updates) However I lost my account for it a long time ago. If they would remove the account authentication from the master server that would be wonderful.
