I want to make a forum for my group of friends since we'll all be away at college and want a way to keep in touch. Obviously doing this for free is what I would want to do if possible. What's the best actual forum to use and where can I host it for free? Is there even a way to do that?
Also if we do get it hosted for free will the host company shut it down if there's objectionable material on it? We're not the most mature people so we're probably gonna end up Goatse'ing each other all the.

I wouldn't use Facebook for this. There are a number of sites that will host free private forums, but I'm not sure about the objectionable material bit. Your best bet is to do a search (I know they're out there, I was in a group that used one and I can't remember the name now), and read each site's ToS.
Depends on what sort of objectionable you're talking about.
In America, there are federal regulations that restrict nude and sexually explicit images on web sites, and require the host of the site to jump through all sorts of hoops to keep them.
Some hosts operate under the "it's not a problem until it's a problem" philosophy meaning that they will let you do it until the feds come knocking. Others take a more direct and preemptive approach (especially large social sites like Facebook).
Luckily that law is currently being fought in courts and should be going bye-bye soon.
COPA just got a kick in the teeth today as well, mwa hahaha.
I set up phpBB3 extremely easily on my LAMP computer. Of course, I'm a bit of a Linux geek, but I don't think it was too complex. In fact, I don't think it would be that hard anyway, they give pretty concise instructions, and its for Windows too, so if you have a half decent upload speed you can probably set it up on your own comp.
I'm seconding Facebook; it's designed for these sort of interactions. You'll most probably find that you guys won't want to post long threads of conversations to each other. Make a Facebook group, or just use wall posts. That's how my friends and I stay in touch.

If you like the forum-type interface, it'll more than do.
