Playing engie tonight on a decent team (as opposed to pubbie) made me realize just how brutal an offensive engineer can be. We only ended up losing that third round of goldrush because of the chokepoint at the end.
Currently, the highest settings that texture resolution can can be set to is "Very High". The command in the console that controls this setting is "mat_picmip". Looking at mat_picmip, the values go from 4 to -10. The higher the number, the more compression the texture is under.
Low settings: mat_picmip 2
Medium settings: mat_picmip 1
High settings: mat_picmip 0
Very High settings: mat_picmip -1
Here is the Very High settings compared to my own settings while looking at an object.
As you can see, there is a lot more detail in -3 than there is in Very High's -1 setting.
Here is another comparison:
Look at the circled spot on the left-side. This shows a bit of texture artifacting/blurring that follows the floor pattern. This mark doesn't show in mat_picmip -3.
You can also compare the seams in the Spy's gloves. On the left side, they are a bit blurry. On the right, the seams are much easier to see and even have more depth to them.
This image shows -1, -3, and the maximum value, -10 all together.
The leap between each of them is very noticeable, but there's a point before you won't really notice the detail, especially in a heated game. Other things such as in-game resolution will effect how well you will notice the higher settings, too.
I understand Valve's reasoning for not having any higher settings, as many of the people who play this game run it at medium-ish settings. I just thought I'd put this out there, for those like me who want every little graphical upgrade they can.
One final comparison, showing the difference in normal mapping.
---
To enable this and see the differences yourself, type into the console (or preferably, in an autoexec):
Code:
mat_picmip #
In place of the #, put in a negative number from -2 to -10 (-10 being the highest quality). If your system is a bit slow on these settings, just keep decreasing the number until you're somewhere you like.
DO YOU SEE
I tried this on -5 and -10. For the most part it ran fine on -10, with a few hiccups when lots of explosions were in the area. It ran perfectly on -5. But there was one SMALL problem with both.... whenever I ubered someone, I would crash to the desktop. Is there a way I can turn off the uber's reflection without toning down graphics?
I'm using the -10 setting, looks primo. Thanks for that info.
I desire more tweaking, however. Does anybody know how to remove the labels of "Your head!" "Your foot!", etc. on the killcam? Or how to make stuff like that and "You came close to this record blah blah" at least disappear when you take a screenshot?

It would be really sweet to get rid of the main objective like "Capture the control points while defending blah blah" at the start of a round. Because I already know how to play damnit :<

In your TF2 folder, go to \tf\media and open "viewed.res" in notepad. Change all the numerical values behind the map names to 50 and you should stop seeing those messages. You'll have to edit the file again once you play a new map for the first time though, so remember that.
It's nice to play somewhere where pubbers don't constantly complain about absent monster-types. Even though they call drifters "babbies" for some reason...
Also, last night I played a TF2 match where I got a headshot from some guy's foot o_O Honestly, I don't even pretend to understand hit detection sometimes.
So has anybody noticed that, when using the Backburner, if you alt fire while firing, it stops using ammo (and doing any damage, unfortunately) but the effect keeps going, even for other players?
The normal flamethrower does the same if you tap the fire button. It will get stuck on but not drain ammo or do damage.
No, when it gets stuck on like that it's a client side thing. Other players can't see it and there's also no sound effect.
What I'm talking about, the effects are still going server side, but it doesn't drain ammo or do damage.
So I figured out what some of my Spy problems may have been.
Apparently the server cloaks a me after the client tells me I'm cloaked. As in, I hit cloak, wait until the "fading" effect has completely stopped, move into the open, and get shot in the face because "I saw you cloak, man". The record so far has been being seen a full 3 seconds after the animation completed.
The weird(read: infuriating) part is that I've never actually been lagging when this happens. My ping is the same as normal, my hit detection is the same as normal, I'm just randomly not cloaked on the server when I'm cloaked on my client.

Protip: hacks do exist. Don't always assume that everyone is legit if something fishy happens, especially in a source game.
Otherwise, the main problem with the spy is his speed (he can't catch up to ANYONE, and is barely faster than a heavy) and the fact that bumping someone = DEAD.
The best way to play a spy right now is to go in guns a blazing and circle strafing while swatting your knife for a random backstab.

I got a headshot off a blatant miss on a revved heavy. I was aimed 3 feet or so to the left of his head.

Also, I doubt he's looking at the thread.
EDIT: It took me forever, but I finally came up with a new style of gameplay, sort of, that should be fun.
Lets start on mine

It is when you are playing with people you know, but otherwise its meh. Also don't expect any updates to it.

How'd the round on goldrush end?
give it a month or so, the urge will come back to you.
You do it then, because I never see anyone play ZM in the PA group
I never asked for this!

Demoman, however, is balanced, AMIRITE?!
Go west from the clover turnabout loop, if you don't know where that is enjoy death.

Man what? Spies are a tiny bit faster than pyros.
