I've always loved this thread title for some reason.
When's GW2 coming out? I figure there's likely no date, but is there a rough year estimate or something?
Late 2010 seems likely to me. Though it could be early 2011. We will be getting solid gameplay info "early next year". I assume that means Q1, which could certainly put beta sometime in 2010.
For a while I thought GW2 had gone under, there was no news about it for about nine months/a year I swear.

The problem was that they had to announce it really early, since they stopped making constant GW expansions due to it. Therefore, they had to explain that "oh, yeah, we're working on GW2". This, combined with their stated desire of doing their beta testing much closer to release, makes for crazy lack of info.
Man, I may have to break my "play only as humans" thing; the other races' environments just look a hell of a lot more badass than "Ye Olde Kingdom". Especially the Charr and viking places.
I'm looking to get away from WoW PvP and into something more PvP-focused. How's Anet doing keeping PvP balanced this late in the game's life? Is it worth jumping into, or should I just wait for GW2?

I think things are pretty balanced right now between the different classes. I'm not really a PvPer but there hasn't been a whole lot of news on patches about buffing this or nerfing that. Mostly someone fines a build that works for a specific situation for a while then someone else finds a counter.
Just be forewarned that PvP is ridiculously hard to get into. The speed at which everything moves is more akin to Quake than the easy-going pace of the PvE the rest of the game consists of.
Every few months they introduce updates to skill balance PvP aspects. The next one should be out within the next month or so. The have a developer log where they discuss these changes and what they were thinking of at the time. They also have a private test server that includes a number of top PvP guilds. If you are only interested in PvP, I think they have something like a $10 PvP unlock that you can buy.
And yes, PvP is fast and furious. You don't quite need the twitch reflexes of a FPS, but there is a lot going on at once that you need to keep track of.

Honestly, I think the PvP was the strongest point of the game and I was mildly saddened to see Eye of the North add very little to it. Hell, even Factions can debatable be argued to be solely a PvP expansion considering how 'eh' the PvE was regarded as.
Nightfall was the first and only truly balanced campaign in terms of PvP and PvE.
Anyone still playing? Whats the best way for a new guy to get into this?
I do occasionally, but I'm antisocial and play at odd times. ;-)
Best way to start is just go through one of the campaigns. If you're interested in PvP, try playing at the arenas in each major city as you go through the PvE campaign. It's a lot easier than just jumping in with a PvP-only character.
No. This has Prophecies and Eye of the North.
Factions is probably the hardest. It's on NewEgg at $15.
Nightfall is the best single chapter, from what I've heard. The price never really drops below $30 for that one as far as I've seen.
Bringing back this thread from the depths because I really want to try this game. Theres a trial right? What does it contain/limit?
Anyone still playing? Whats the best way for a new guy to get into this? Is Steam the cheapest option?
If anyone has an account they aren't using I can totally take it of your hands for a while.
I'm looking to play through all of the campaigns, since I've had this game forever but I've never really played it. I'd be down for trying to run through the campaigns together.
Haha, awesome, my only OP about a game. I love seeing this thing get revived every once and a while. And the title derived from my sister playing GW with the group (Back in the day) and the constant neckbearded attempts at flirting.
I still need to finish my game...
We really should get a GW night going. Any night but Thursday works for me and I have every campaign available.
I also need to do every campaign. I'm stuck on US-Easter time. Mondays or Tuesdays are probably best for me, but honestly if its only a two or three hour block, I could set aside time any night of the week.

Hmmm.... Monday/Tuesday works... but right now, I'm stuck on a pm shift for the next couple of weeks.
Unless you're free in the morning we'll have to put things on hold for a bit.
Isn't KCHS still around? Last I heard it was alive but somewhat defunct from lack of activity.

Somewhat? I became the leader once because everyone else hadn't logged in in over 2 weeks. (Of course I then lost leadership by not logging in for over 3 months so take that what you will).
I think we all scattered and I haven't seen/heard anything from the KCHS guild in ages.

I think I'm still a member of "This Train is made of ra[pe]" which was another PA guild someone started, we have a shitty guildhall with only a few (or none, it's been awhile) amenities and only a handful of players. Hell, I think I'm even the guild leader now.

I think someone might have disbanded the guild when they were leader upon seeing everyone else being inactive for several weeks.
And the half million was a rough estimate for the majority of amenities. I'm sure we could do without a dye trader or something, but the storage and crafters we're going to want at least.

Looks like it's time to reinstall Guild Wars, eh? Time to find all my DvDs. XD
PA guilds for MMOs rarely last very long, there just aren't enough forumers actively playing any of them to singlehandedly maintain a guild. The ones that survive usually turn into a regular guild with only loose connections to the forums, like with WoW.
Just saw this thread had been resurrected and was wanting to ask some advice about GW.
Amazon has the guild wars complete collection for cheap as chips (in the UK) and myself and a friend were tempted to get it for a bit of co-op rpg. Neither of us are interested in PvP (at the moment) we would be purely wanting it for a co-op storied rpg in the vein of Baldurs Gate et al but more purdy like, would it fit the bill?
From what little research i've done into the game it seems the storylines are good, with good gfx and a system based on team play and tactics it seems to be what we are looking for, but is there enough meat on the bones so to speak for just approaching it in this way?
We may be able to convince a couple of other mates to join in, but if not are the henchmen/heroes an ok party filler?
Thanks for any advice you can give!

GW is great for co-op play with friends, and the henchies are more than capable despite much of the gripes you'll hear.
An AI monk for healing is very feasible if a player-controlled one isn't available.

Heh, I should have checked out this thread sooner. I got back into the game. Currently playing through Prophecies with my bro, buddy, and his bro. Even made a guild for us to hang out in, for no particular reason actually. I even grinded out the 2k gold for a cloak. :P
If I had read the thread earlier I could have donated that 2k gold to a PA guild cloak I guess.

A Capellan's favorite sheath for any blade is your back.
Kansas City Hotsteppers [KCHS] still exists. Here's the current guild screen:
As of about 15 minutes ago. So whoever Ezra Cyonian is (please step forward!), you're the auto-designated leader. I suspect you already know that, though! Anyway, I'd be happy to take guild leader and just keep the guild in stasis, letting folks use the hall and its amenities while soloing. I log into GW enough and check the forums enough to keep it going, I think.
Also, very important: There has been a major, widely disseminatedsecurity problem with the PlayNC/NCSoft website that apparently gives access to random people's accounts. Plus they say there have been increased attempts to hack into PlayNC accounts unrelated to that. That's why there's the big bold-faced red warning on the login screen and the new login requirement that you type one of your character's names each time. So change your passwords! and make sure your master PlayNC account and your game accounts are all safe!
Far less important, they screwed up the Wintersday event (it didn't give out hats to many/most people), so they will be running it again in the near future.

Thanks for that I was hoping that would be the answer, nice to know one of us won't have to take the healing role as well (not that I mind it, but good there's at least a choice!)
So, upon being unable to recall the names of any of my characters, I've had to e-mail support. I wonder if I'll actually get around to playing this today.
Update:
Apparently I was listening to a shit load of folk music when I last played, so my character was named Hanging Johnny. Yay, I get to log in.
My character is named Sour Stripes, currently around 12 in nightfall. I have very little idea what I'm doing. It's fun though!
How far in is it that you can start taking boat rides between the campaigns? I know its going to be a while for me, I'm still in pre-searing and I want to do all the quests there before i move on.

Technically you're not supposed to do that, as per the terms of service. ;-)
It's also nice to have all four character slots.

Guess I better get started... Guild hall creation is fucking expensive and that capital isn't going to raise itself.
I guess I can start turning tricks over in the Eye. Maybe get some Pre-Searing action as well...
EDIT:
Well guess what? Looks like the Kansas City Hot Steppers are no more as I'm able to make a guild with that name.
So, 100 gold for guild creation, + 100 per new member and 2000 for a fancy cape. and ~500,000 gold for all the amenities
Fuck... I ain't doing this alone.
Do they delete whole guilds? When I logged in earlier this year my character was still in KCHS.
And the half million was a rough estimate for the majority of amenities. I'm sure we could do without a dye trader or something, but the storage and crafters we're going to want at least.
Yeah, and they were really active up until the end.
Also, PA also has an active EVE Online corp but it's also part of the much larger Something Awful alliance.
You don't need the DVDs.
