This only seems to happen when I watch an .avi file, but Explorer.exe will jump up to 100% CPU usage for 1 to 2 mins. I can end the process and restart explorer, but that crashes some programs in the systray. A google search found some threads suggesting to remove some keys in the registry. I backed them up and did so but no help. Any other ideas?
But, if you are after mere parlor tricks, you will be sorely disappointed. For if I reach behind your ear, it will not be a nickel I pull out, but your very soul!
This is PURELY ANECDOTAL, but everytime this seemed to happen to one of my friends, I would dig into it and eventually find viruses/worms chewing up resources. Granted usually this happened all the time, not while ONLY watching an .avi file. But make sure. Generally if I run into an issue like this on my own computer it's around my annual format time anyways, so I just deal with it that way.
I had this problem when I had my graphics card that didn't like my motherboard. I think it was my 6600gt. Do you have one of those? It sure sounds like exactly the same thing and if I remember turning off something in the bios.
I get this on a few occassions too. It's sometimes followed by a pop-up window when logging off stating a certain program is not responding and I have to click cancel to log off. I can't remember the exact name of the program, but I'll see if I can dig it up and report here. Anything I should be worried about?

Are you watching the AVI file from a directory where it gets thumbnailed? That might chew on your processor some.
