Shining Force is like Fire Emblem only a lot easier. Death is not permanent and you can keep replaying battles to level up. Also the turn order goes by character speed, not by entire sides at once, which I like a lot.

Sword of Vermilion is a pretty fun old RPG. Actiony, so the battles are quick. Lots of big maps, mazelike but it's easy to find maps to help you get through.

BoF II is a great game, with one small caveat.

It has the worst localization job of any SNES RPG.

    By far.

So bad in fact that it makes HM look fantastic.

Shining in the Darkness is a great game, but it's a labyrinth game so I don't know how you feel about that. Also Sword of Vermilion is great, but the combat isn't like a normal turn based. Sorta actiony.
I played Shining in the Darkness back when it was released. It was a really fun dungeon crawl. I liked it.

Am I daft to think that this could be a very awesome thing?

As an option directly applicable to your requests, Shoegaze, I'd definitely recommend Star Tropics. I loved it when I was a kid, and the intrigue factor after returning to it years later was surprisingly adequate. Based on what you listed as personal priorities, I think this game will suit you well.

On the side, give Actraiser a shot.

Strongly leaning towards Star Tropics thanks to comments here. Maybe I'll do that and Ocarina of Time, then figure out another NES game to get. Thanks, folks.

That said, I liked BoF II, but not as much as BoF I. The frog and monkey were silly characters. The dog was useless and the plant thing was weird. The shaman system made up for it though.

    TreePole: Be used for fishing

Bad localization? Hell, that game predicted the future.

The best part about BoF2 was when you'd go to fuse shamans, and the helper lady would be all like "Do you want an explanation on how this works?"

You'd think that after the first time, you'd say "No". However, the correct answer is actually "Yes".

Yeah after once or twice I interpreted that as "Do you already know how this works and thus do not need an explanation."

I just figured she was a massive bitch:

"Hey, this wiseass thinks he doesn't need my help? Well I'll show him!" *15 dialog boxes of explanations*
