Problems with Steam apps

ViaosHK56ViaosHK56 Registered User regular
I've noticed that any Steam application seems to go haywire on my PC. Any other applications/games run just fine, yet Half Life 2, Team Fortress 2, Half Life, Portal... Any of those seems to have massive glitches or crash my computer. As far as computer specs go, I have a GeForce 8800 GT card, 3gbs of ram and a 1.8ghz Dual Core Pentium. I would give a few guesses such as processor bottlenecking the video card or overheating, but the fact that everything else runs fine leads me to believe it's a problem with the Steam client itself. Any thoughts on how to fix this would be nice.

Could you go into some more detail on what exactly you mean by "massive glitches or crash my computer"?

    Specifically --

    What glitches?

    When does it happen?

    How does it crash?

Do you receieve any error messages?

What type of crash? (to desktop, computer shutdown, etc.)

    How often?

EDIT: Does it only occur with those Source games you mention, or any game that utilizes the Steam overlay?

    What glitches?

Well, stuff such as taking about 2-3 minutes on the "Preparing to Launch Team Fortress 2"
Alt tabbing around 10 times before going to the TF2 main menu (And by alt tabbing, I mean switching between a black screen and the desktop)
Running the game fine for about 20 minutes, then the frame rate and the sound will become choppy or laggy.

    When does it happen?

Everytime I open any Steam program from the Steam menu.

    How does it crash?

    Completely locks the program down.

Do you receieve any error messages?

    No messages of any kind.

What type of crash? (to desktop, computer shutdown, etc.)

Crashes to the desktop, unless it freezes my computer completely.

    How often?

It'll crash anytime I try and close the program or about 15-20 minutes into the game I'm trying to play.

It starts going about 9-10FPS and the sound also slows down, right? Instead of just locking it down completely, or does it outright freeze?

Both, it'll do the slowing down first. And then it will out right stop.

You say "Steam apps" but you only mention Source games (assuming Half Life is HL:Source). Does it happen with other Steam stuff? Try turning off the Steam in-game overlay.

I'm not sure what the Steam in game over-lay is, but if it only fixed non-source games that wouldn't really help me. I'm trying to get TF2, HL2, etc. working.

Right click on Steam icon > Settings > In-Game.

you should verify the files to make sure they are not corrupted. you can do this in the games tab, right clicking on the game > properties > local files > verify integrity of game cache

I'm going to hazard a guess and say that this is a pre-built machine that had an aftermarket 8800GT popped into it.

Looking for a DX:HR OnLive code for my kid brother.
Can trade TF2 items or whatever else you're interested in. PM me.

It is, but the problem was actually something with Steam games.

The fix was to set the refresh rate to 100hz and it's working great now (from what I hear).

    Also possibly the in-game overlay.
