I was going to stick this in the help/advice forum but I think this might be more appropriate. I picked up a new sound system last night and I'm having some issues. I'm running a Yamaha HTR 6160 for a receiver and the speakers are Harmon/Kardon HKTS 15.

For the sake of ease I'll tell you how I have everything wired in terms of each component:

1. 42 inch Samsung LCD - HDMI cable from the HDMI OUT on the receiver
2. HD Cable/PVR box - Component (RGB) cables running to the Receiver with Digital Coax cable running to the receiver for sound
3. Xbox 360 - Component (RGB) cables running to the receiver with an optical cable for sound
4. PS3 - HDMI cable to the HDMI IN on the receiver
5. Wii - Component (RBG) cables running to the receiver with just left and right audio for sound (RW)

Now, the problems I'm having are manifold. The PS3 seems to be running just fine. I'm getting picture and audio just fine. The HD Cable/PVR box - I'm getting audio but not on the same channel as the video, obviously this is problematic.

The 360 I'm not seeing at all - nor am I getting any audio. I switched the the input to standard def and I could see picture but there was still no sound - plus I'd obviously want it to run in HD.

Just for shits and giggles I took the optical cable and ran it from the cable box to the receiver and that fixed things in terms of getting audio/visual on the same channel for the TV - however that leaves the 360 with only left and right (RW) audio cords for sound - I'd prefer to use the optical to maintain quality.

If any of you can see that I'm doing something claringly wrong I'd appreciate the insight. Honestly, I imagine this is futile without actually seeing the set up but I figured I'd ask anyway.

Here's a link to the receiver as well: http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/productdetail.html?CNTID=567572

I'll have to read more into this, but it sounds like you've got some issues with the audio inputs on your receiver not being mapped to the right video inputs. Normally there's at least two each of optical/coaxial inputs - I'd bet you have your 360 and PVR plugged into the same "pair".

Move your 360's optical cable to the other input, and then switch the receiver to "Component 2" or whatever the equivalent is.

I actually suspect you're correct. My problem is that I don't know how to remap the inputs. You're also correct about it having two coax and 2 optical inputs. Thanks for the initial help - hopefully you guys can help me figure this out.

As annoying as it is, you may actually need to pull out the manual (or get the .PDF from Yamaha) for this one; I've never handled that one offhand.

I'd wager that you don't actually need to remap the inputs - just shuffle plugs. You've probably got it set up like this right now:

    PVR - Video (Component1) Audio (Coax1)
    360 - Video (Component2) Audio (Optical1)

Oy, I have no problem with going through the manual (I've been doing so already). However since I'm fairly technologically retarded it's like reading Sanskrit. I suspect that this will end in fire. Loud fire.

I'll try to remember to leaf through it at home and figure out WTF is going on, but no promises.

And you should learn Sanskrit. Bitches love Sanskrit.

FIXED!!! (mostly) - thanks Peregrine, you were right. It was totally a mapping issue.
Audio is running perfectly for all the components - my problem now lies in the video for the 360, particularly the HD video.
When I run the Xbox via components I can see the picture so long as I have the switch on the back of the cord set to "Standard def". As soon as I flick the switch to "HD" and the system reboots I lose my video.

Here's what I think might work (I'm at work so I can't try it yet) - let me know if this should do the trick.

If I run the 360 in standard def and then switch it to 1080i via the dashboard and THEN flick the switch to "HD" should that work?

(Good lord the syntax of that sentence is terrible)

Is the final video connection from your receiver to your TV an HDMI cable? I have a feeling there's some voodoo going on of that sort.

Yes it is. So in terms of the 360 it looks like this:

    360
    Component Cables
    Receiver
    HDMI Cable
    TV
    |_________ Optical Cable _____________|

Nice ASCII. I have a feeling the problem is with your receiver having an issue converting component to HDMI, either on certain inputs or certain resolutions.

    1. Is your PVR outputting an HD, ED, or SD signal?
    2. Can you try the 360 on the PVR's set of component inputs?

It might only be capable of accepting 480i on the secondary inputs, and 480i/480p/720p/1080i on the primary. Or it might not be wanting to do the translation from component-to-HDMI on anything >480i. Check to see that the input doesn't specify 480i only, as some of them do. (Front HDMI port on my TV only takes up to 1080i for example, it's for camcorders)

The PVR/Cable Box outputs HD and it's working just fine. I'll check the rest of the stuff as soon as I get home. Thanks!

Argh, so it's definitely an issue with the Xbox. As I mentioned above the HD Digital Cable is now running fine. Since you suspected only certain Inputs would output to the HDMI I decided to completely replace the Digital cable with the 360 - I got sound but no picture.

    Any thoughts?

Unless your 360 has suddenly decided to epically fail to output HD video, I'd say there's a problem there.

I assume it still works if you plug the 360 directly into the back of your TV?

If the Wii is working, then this has nothing to do with passing the signal through HDMI.
Definitly try the 360 straight into the TV.

Yup, ending up doing the 360 direct to the TV with the optical running to the receiver. Everything is a-ok now. Thanks for all the help guys - I owe you all a drink.

If I were you, I'd want to make it work like it should.
But then again, it working is the best outcome no matter what.

Oh, hey, buy a universal remote (harmony).
