Australia's Government = Jack Thompson

Hi All,

New user here, I don't know if I am posting in the right area so just let me know since I have only been a member for a very short time.

I guess I really have one question being who let Jack Thompson spout his anti games sh!t to the Australian community?

Not sure how many of you are aware or care but Fallout 3 has been banned in Australia due to the country not having a censorship for 18+ on computer games. Anyway, the below is the link which details the issue and the morons behind it.

http://www.gamearena.com.au/news/read.php/4750383?latest=1

Any feedback on how we as a country should approach this and ultimatly avoid going down the path that people like Jack and the panel in the above video seem to want to force us without the freedom to choose, would be much appreciated.

move to america? our games are cheaper and we get them faster!

or uh, since that's vastly improbably for the huge majority of people, i guess write constructively angry letters to everyone you can in your local governments. on paper, generally speaking you're more likely to get a response that way.

Oh I would move to America if I could the lottery green card system you have makes this a little difficult though... I do drool at the thought of lower ping times and more freedom.

I don't suppose you could have someone over in America purchase the game for you (At a cheaper price) and then mail it?

I don't think giving this guy attention has ever lead to anything productive. All our collective gamer outrage isn't going to make a goddamn lick of difference in Ozzieland. If there are people willing to listen to a crazy disbarred American lawyer over there there's not much you can do until the next elections or a dingo eats your current leader and it's time to elect and/or find a new one in the bush or however you do it. Then I'd suggest you vote or sacrifice chickens to the moon goddess or however your elections work. They don't really teach us about that stuff over here.

I imagine that most users here will aquire it by some means *cough* bit-torrent *cough* which will end up hurting Bethesda (or whoever is making the game). If its a online content people are after then more than likely it will get bought off of ebay from hong kong or somewhere where the shit is probably stolen.

Reading the Rock star thread I can understand why they are not even bothering to sell games in this country anymore...

If it's eventually available on Steam (possible, but I'm not sure I'd really say it's likely), you'd probably find plenty of people willing to help you out by paying into their paypal account and them gifting it to you.

People have been doing that already with Ubisoft games on Steam (available in the US but for some reason Ubisoft refuses to retail it anywhere else. Do they just hate money or something?)

I didn't know this was Thompson's work, I thought it was just a bunch of Aussie nuts who were paranoid about drugs

Thompson is actually a pretty reasonable guy outside of conversations including the phrase "murder simulator". Remember his reaction during the press coverage of Mass Effect's sexual content?

"come on you dolts it's like five seconds long and it involves sexy blue aliens this happened like fifty times with captain kirk" (paraphrasing here)

The way I remember from one of the previous threads, the reason why Australia doesn't have a 18+ rating for computer games because there's this one guy (a really old conservative political leader of some sort) who always strikes down any attempts to introduce a 18+ rating.

Might not be entirely correct, that's just what I remember reading.

OP was making a joke or something, it's not Thompson.

Also I was going to quote Princess Bride but I don't want to offend any Australians, who are used to not being trusted.

Ah yes, Michael Atkinson. Would it surprise you to know he has some very right-wing christian groups constantly in his ear?

The guy isn't just part of the problem down here. He is the problem. No amount of facts will ever change his mind, and his power of veto is absolute. I know for a fact that the OFLC would prefer and R and X rating, it would make their job so much easier.

So our only solution is if Michael Atkinson has an "accident" and is replaced by someone more reasonable. I have to admit that I do find it disgusting that one person can limit an entire country based on their individual beliefs, regardless of what religous group is in their ear.

Interesting that this clown managed to stay out of the lime light though.

If that's a problem with you then you may want to postpone moving to the US until after 2008.

Yeah if Australia wants to fix this problem they need to do something about this one guy because he is really the only thing against it.

What I find kind of fucked up is that (after watching the video in the link, and many others similar to it before) - whenever the questions of censorship is raised, whether it's over in Ozzieland, the States, here in Canada or wherever else its always getting asked to a group of old (older? whatever) people that wouldn't recognize a video game if it bit them in the fucking ass.

Generally its the same script of "Hey, maybe we could not ban the games but make them rated in such a way that only people over 18/20/22/huuuuurrrrr could buy them?" which always gets a response of either "Well I've heard of these vidja game things before and ZOMG children!" or "Well I'm a mom and I don't know anything about video games but my sixteen children play them and OMG THINK OF THE CHILDREN!".

For fucks sake, seriously. Why is it that the people that are rating or banning game in certain places, are the people that know absolutely fuck all about them?

Try living in Germany. They censor the living shit out of anything they see. Half-Life was populated by mostly robots, people FUCKING SAT DOWN when they got killed. My Steam account is pretty much useless since this has been enforced, so I have to rely on the near by military installation's store to get my games. I feel for you man, maybe you should import an NTSC console? I guess it would be worth it in the end...

Christ, I heard about that. Didn't the combine have green blood? I feel for you guys.

Nah, man, they had grey blood, and dissapeared 3 seconds post-mortem. And in Team-Fortress 2...oh, god, I can't even bring myself to describe it. Think of it as the Birthday mode. All the time. And it's nobody's fucking birthday.

This is why I bought a japanese ps3 and kept my modded ps2 for import ps2 games and general backwards compatibility. The japanese ps3 at the time was almost exactly half price minus shipping.

There there, it's going to get better.

We'll just wait till our generation takes over the control of this country, and then we can play all the adult games we want while censoring the up-and-coming new medium of the time.

    Man, the future totally rules.

I was under the impression all the censorship in games in Germany is in fact voluntary on the side of the developers; ie, you can still sell violent games as is (except for specific cases), they just won't get put on display in stores.
Now, Bavarian (?) politics regarding games are a completely different story. Murder simulators indeed.
