The "W" in Wii is for "Waaaaa" (Busted Wii)

This happened the other day, and I've been stewing on it for a little while pondering how to handle it.

It would appear that my Wii's disk reader has retired. I don't know what prompted it, as I wasn't even playing it at the time. My little sister and my cousin were at the help. I got called down for trouble shooting with SSBB stopped playing. Investigating, I discovered that inserting any disk into the system causes it to emit a grating, horrifying series of clicks, then spit out a Disk Read Error message, telling me to consult my manual which has been forever lost.

I've had this machine since January 2007 without any problems, and infact this is the first console I've ever owned that has broken down so early in my ownership of it. Even my Gamecube didn't start having trouble until about 6 months before the Wii came out, and I played the hell out of it.

I unfortunately don't have a warranty on it, so I could be royally fucked in that department as well.

As a side note, my Hard Drive doesn't appear to be affected, so Virtual Console games still play. It's just the Disk Drive, it would seem.

Gotta just call Nintendo and tell them what is up. They can repair it and they're usually very reasonable. Especially since it's apparently through no fault of you own, dropping it or anything etc.

That's too bad. This is a pretty unique problem from the sound of things. Most Wiis are chugging along just fine, aside from the odd video card meltdown.

Call the big N. I know they were replacing drives back when SSBB first came out, they may let you have one on the house; after all, they're rich beyond fucking belief.

Oh yeah, mention that they were playing Smash Bros. and feel free to hint around that you knew it was a pretty intensive game that pushed the system...

Brawl is dual layered and harder for the Wii to read compared to normal Wii games. If the lens on the disc reader is dirty, it won't read the game. This has been known to happen in dusty houses and in the houses of smokers.

    Oh, that's interesting.

See, my Wii is set up in our basement, which was a completely finished basement until about a month ago when it flooded. The Wii wasn't damaged but our pergo flooring was ruined. Luckily insurance covered it and my family took the opportunity to redo the entire room, including new flooring and new wall work. We stipped the paper and painted, and in the between we sanded the fuck out of it. So yeah, the Wii could easily have gotten dusty on the inside.

Would I still need to ship that out to have it fixed, or is there some MacGuyver move I can do if that's the problem?

You'll need to ship it out. The Wii is packed tighter than a (insert dirty metaphor involving young college women) inside, so there's really no user-serviceable anything.

I long for the good days of blowing into the cartridge slot.

So call them up and follow their shipping instructions? Got it.

I noticed Brawl would give my Wii a hard time, too. But hey, at least yours wasn't struck by lightning! :|

I still haven't got it repaired... Stupid busy life...

Pretty much. While my Wii hasn't kicked the bucket personally, general response from those who have has been "Holy crap that was fast/pleasant/easy/etc"

    That is my sole relief.

I've been pretty much absorbed with FFTA2 and haven't really touched my Wii in about a month, largely because of what happened to the basement.

Though I am looking forward to MM9.

You'll be mad at what comes out next Monday.
Ah, who am I kidding? It'll be another TG16 game, and a stupid flash->wii port.

When my Wii wouldn't read SSBB I filled out a form on Nintendo's website and they had me ship it to them, and I got it back fixed within a week.

They were fixing Wiis for free when SSBB first came out. Just say you bought SSBB, put it in the Wii.. now it won't read. They'll clean it.
