So there isn't going to be an official Mario Kart Wii tournament. And because this sucks so bad for those of us who have been looking forward to it, I decided to organize one by myself, despite my better judgement.
This is still in the planning stage; I don't know if I can actually manage to pull this off. I'll keep you guys updated as things unfold.
REGISTRATION
I'm hoping for 32-64 people competing. Registration will be internet mostly; I don't have the time to wait around for people to register in person. So just post on here on this thread expressing your interest in competing and I'll add you to the list. If there are over 64 people, then I'll set up a waiting list. But you're not on any list, feel free to show up when the tournament starts and, if there's a vacant spot, I won't turn you away.
Registration is now open! I will have a printed sheet of the registerer's names during the tournament. Please check off your name when you arrive so I know if there are any deserters. If you don't arrive on time, I may have to give your spot to someone else on the waiting list.
TIME AND PLACE
The tournament will be at 2:00-3:30 on Saturday in room 214 on the second floor. I'll have the registration sheet taped to the door. Please remember to sign yourself in when your arrive to make my life easier.
RULES
3-4 players per round. 4 tracks per round. I think, in the first set of rounds, the top two players in each set of 4 will move on. I'm not really sure how this is supposed to work, but whatever. In the event of any draws, the two people will have a 1 on 1 tiebreaker on a single track. Random track selection on 150cc. No CPUs. Balanced items. Your choice of characters, karts, control scheme, auto/manual. You will probably have to bring your own wheel or GC controller if you want to use those.
If you pull something like
this or
this and maybe
this you are so disqualified, you jerk.
PRIZES
There will be a first and second prize. Second prize is a metroid plushie, and a first prize is a metroid plushie plus a sealed F-Zero game courtesy of
Gamedeals.ca, the Vancouver, Burnaby, and New Westminister's best source of new and used, retro and current games!
However... if I win first or second place, I won't take a prize and instead there'll be a third place winner.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP
-For now, I'm seeing how much interest there is for the tournament. So maek poast and let me know if you're interested.
-Donate prizes. So I won't have to provide it all.
-I would like some people's help with organizational things during the tournament, such as yelling at people, taking down attendance, taking note of who wins in each round, guarding prizes, etc. I can probably enlist the help of my friends, but I would rather have people devoted to the cause help me out.
So what do you guys think? I'm open to suggestions as to how I should run this, or any change of rules or anything. Hopefully it'll all work out.

I was thinking, for the MKWii tourney, maybe it's a better idea to have CPUs instead of no CPUs. Having 4 players plus 8 computer is a lot more fun than only 4 karts on a track. Thoughts?
also depending on what's already available, people can provide consoles/controllers/games for the tourney. I have 2 Gamecubes, a few controllers, and 1 copy of the DD, also a Wii, MK:Wii, 2 wheels, etc. We could make it work, but like I said it depends on what they already have and if they'll let us do it in the freeplay room.
(which would be awesome!)
I am pretty sure you can transfer unlocked content. Check out http://wiisave.com/ for instructions. You need an SD card, an SD card reader, and a lot of patience... but it beats unlocking everything manually.
Also, you could get all the friend codes from the Wiis and try taking MK-Wii online, and play with just friends. That way we could get 12 people in the same race. Might not work out, but it would be worth looking into.
Also, as expressed in the other thread, I am very interested in playing Double Dash. All we really need is 4x Gamecubes to support 16 simultaneous players, and then run a tournament from there. I can bring 3x Gamecubes and all the networking equipment we'll need, if interest is high enough.
Good news though! I got ahold of the Console Freeplay guy and he says that he'll try to help me out. Room layouts and things haven't been finalized so we don't know yet what room we'll be in.
And for those of you itching for some MKDD, there will be 4 networked GCs! I'm not willing to do a DD tourney on top of a MKWii one though, so someone else can take care of that if they want...
Also, I changed the rules a bit. If less than 32 people show up, the top two players of the first round move on ahead instead of only one. I figure that might be a bit more fair.
Hooray!!!! do you need multiple sd cards?
Man, if you can get this running that would be awesome.
I've been practicing with the Bullet Bike cuz that didn't need to be unlocked. WELL HELL WITH THAT. I'M STICKING TO THE DOLPHIN DASHER!
The Register's list will be printed out for the tournament. When you show up, please check your name off on that list so I know who's here.

Sign me up, baby.
Hmmm, only from 2-3:30? The smash tourney is scheduled for basically all day... also that will cut into the PAX make a strip panel.
Traditionally, the Smash Tourney takes fooorrreeevvveerrr. The MK tourney traditionally starts an hour late due to the headache of registered people not showing up and having to fill in with those on the waiting list. But since this is unofficial and, judging by the responses in this thread, there aren't gonna be as many people, I think an hour and a half might be enough. We can always go longer if needed.
As for cutting into the make a strip panel, well, no matter what time I pick, it's gonna cut into something interesting. Hopefully Gabe will be done with the more interesting drawings by one hour.
Yeah i can tell that the Smash tourney will take long, i'm contemplating not entering.
Also, man i didn't run into any scheduling problems last year, oh wait that was my first time going and i didn't know what to do at all. And sorry but i really can't miss the Meag64 panel so i can't enter...
And prizes have now been finalized! Since there aren't that many participants, there'll be two prizes. Both of them will get a metroid plushie and first prize will also get a sealed copy of F-Zero, courtesy of Gamedeals.ca. Buuut, if I happen to place in first or second, I'll give up my prize for a third place winner. Really, bragging rights are the best reward.
The location of the tourney is still... fuzzy. I'm not sure which console freeplay room we'll be in. But it shouldn't be difficult to find me with my metroid hat on. I'll probably also have the registration sheet taped up on the door so it's visible from the hall.
Since we have an uncertain and probably uneven number of participants, how player elimination is supposed to work is going to be... somewhat chaotic. For everyone's first round at least, the top 2 players will move on. After that, heck, I dunno. I'm probably gonna end up with 5 players for the final round and aaaaa how is that supposed to work. But I hope that the organization will work itself out in a way that's fair and satisfactory to everyone.
Anyways, see you all Saturday!
[edit]Heck, I guess I'll sign myself up too. At least to make it even numbered. So... yeah. Me and ShinWHO signing up (if it's not too late).
Registration is mostly for convenience. We have lots of space open for anyone who isn't registered and wants to play.
Non-registered people are welcome to compete too! See you there!
I so should a) Read that it's Mario Kart Wii, and b) Play more Mario Kart Wii.
Organization of the whole thing went a lot smoother than I thought. The confusion over the rooms was because one of my emails didn't get through. Next year I'll have my act together more and maybe get more participants and official prize support. That is, if I can't convince the Tourney guys to hold an official Mario Kart Wii tournament! In either case, see you next year!
