How should I go about learning characters? I generally suck at fighting games. But with this I wanted to pick a character and get good enough that I can at least hold my own in random online matches. So I picked Apprentice but I don't really know what's going to be most effective for teaching myself. Should I just play through Tower Mode over and over? Training is boring and I'm no good at memorizing a couple of dozen combos.
careful with apprentice - he's one of the characters, like mitsu, kilik and cervantes that even if you destroy another player on your own merits they will use his absurd strength as an excuse.

Go into training mode, first. Learn how to do the moves you think are cool and fun. See if you can do neat things with the moves you like, try and combo them together.
Then, freind request people here. Speaking for the 360 owners, I'm always about teaching people how to play fighters and if you want to learn I'll sit down with you and go over strategies and moves for just about any character. Spend some time learning the ins and outs against friendly opponents, and then you'll be ready to take on the more serious competition.
Okay I'll see what I can do in Training Mode. Online is mostly out unless you guys live in New Zealand. Latency was pretty noticeable for the few random matchups I tried. But I do have quite a few locals I can practice against. Appreciate the offer though
I'm also more than willing to help anyone who wants to learn more about the game. Add my and we can play a few games on the weekend, or whenever.
I'd love to learn more and get better, but I bought the PS3 version so I'm outta luck as far as matches with you go.
Heathen!

I am, however, honestly beginning to believe I bought the wrong version. I still can't get the 1.01 patch (required for online play) to download despite downloading the PSN update and various demos without issue.
careful with apprentice - he's one of the characters, like mitsu, kilik and cervantes that even if you destroy another player on your own merits they will use his absurd strength as an excuse.
I'm not too concerned with being accused of being cheap. Once I feel like I'm decent with one character I'll try and branch out to more. I found myself pretty comfortable off the bat with Apprentice though.
Also I find myself playing against people using what I figured were considered 'easy' characters like Cervantes and Raph (how the hell do I stop Raph once he gets my guard down? His combo's seem to go on for half of my health bar), so if they want to bitch about me using an easy character they can go to hell
My first CAS, a random girl I made, probably going to switch her weapon and I can't seem to combo using Hilde's moveset at all.
And next, the guy I've actually been using, the infamous Dread Pirate (Roberts, but sadly the last part doesn't fit )
Apologies for the crappy picture quality, both a lousy Digicam AND my "HD"TV is a terrible piece of junk. Probably going to move the 360 to my room and hook it into my nice crisp widescreen monitor.
Too bad their stats are horrible for the most part because I used simplistic clothing options.

It's possible to unlock Angol with a CAS. I just did it a few hours ago with a Siegfried CAS.
So I've raised my win percentage from 22% to 38%. Soon I will be unstoppable!
I'm still not fast enough or consistent enough with guard impacts for it to be worthwhile to even attempt them. I can rock the guard impacts against the computer, but online I get hit like 3 or 4 times before I pull one off successfully (then I'm so surprised I don't follow it up with an attack). What am I doing wrong, or how can I practice the timing?
Edit: for anone looking for a charicter, choose kilik. He is incredibly easy to learn.
his X+Y moves, dashing x combo, and a few sidestep combos are really all you need to know to start scraping fools online. Really, I would reccomend just using whoever you cheese best with, and then just rounding out your skills by figuring out the combos you like here and there. While you are learning how to play though, cheese is your bread and butter. Ha, so clever.

Tell me! I must know!
EDIT: oops, thought you meant unlock Algol's CAS style.
When you first start out, you'll need to learn a specific set of "core" moves. This gives you a good base to start on. Go in to training and find these moves for your character:
Ring-Out: Find out the simplest set of moves that will knock a character out of the ring. Include one low and one medium/high minimum.
Stuff: This is your "stuff" attack. It is a short range, very quick hit. It doesn't matter if it's part of a combo, because normally you'll just use the one attack two or three times to get separation or interrupt attack animations. Some characters like Kilik have ridiculous bad ones, while Mitsurugi and Xiaghua have godly fast stuffs.
Trip/Sweep: You should know at least two moves that trip/sweep the opponent from a moderate range and knock them to the ground completely.
Wake-up: Often called "free hits" or "cheap bullshit" by people that don't know how to guard recover from the ground, these are moves that will hit a prone character. Bonus points for using a move that knocks the character down again, making it impossible for them to get up without getting up using guard.
Horizontal: You'll need at least one decent swinging attack that will stop other players from just sidestepping you. Raphael is notorious bad for getting sidestepped with his large number of lunging vertical combos.
Closer: Find a good combo or attack that can quickly close distance on an opponent. This is increasingly critical for shorter range characters like Voldo or Maxi.
Guard Break: I wouldn't classify this as "essential" but it's good to know. These moves are usually accompanied by lightning bolts. These are different from unblockables which are shown with a huge sweeping flame.
Bread and Butter: I call this the bread and butter combos. They're usually just your main B,B,B combo, etc that hits three times. Know a couple good combos and don't be afraid to only stop with the first two hits. It's good to interrupt the timing so you don't get predictable.
This essentially shortens your move list from a massive incomprehensible list to maybe a dozen or so moves, which is much more manageable for a new player. From there, start to build up to the more complex move sets. Don't worry about learning the "super ultra mega combos" for each character.
How to do the Critical Finish: When your opponent's soul gauge gets red and their life bar starts flashing, if you attack and hear the "glass breaking" noise, simply press A+B+K+G (LB on the Xbox controller) after hearing the noise. It doesn't matter how much armor the opponent is missing, if any. You have to consecutively block a lot without attacking back for this to happen, so you'd have to be turtling really hard to be on the receiving end of one of these. Make sure not to press LB (or whatever the PS3 equivalent is, I'm sure its L1) in the middle of a combo of the game will sometimes register you continuing the combo.
How do you do critical finishes? I've never been able to do one.
Go into training, set your opponents soul gage to None, and make htem just block. Smack them till they explode into a purple star burst ,and then hit the left top Button (not trigger) as soon as you see the purple burst. You'll do a Critical Finish.
In regular play, that will happen if they block too much, their red bar will blink, u smack them a few more times and they'll do the purple star burst.
So, I'm ascending the tower, I had ZERo problems till I hit floor 11, now I can't pass it worth a shit. What the hell is with this floor of pain? Why did the difficulty jump like that?

If it's the level I'm thinking of, I got past it by switching to Raphael and just repeatedly thrusting until they were against the edge, then knocking them off. Took a bit of luck, but I went from dying on the first opponent to getting three ring-outs in a row, and finishing with ~50% hp, first try.

I will give that a whirl cause they are eating my face for breakfast, even with Kilik, where I can typically cheap the shit out of people with.
Are there any modern character clothes? aside from the school girl out fit?
Also, is there a way to make the characters not so symmetrical? I saw some that weren't, and was like, all "Huh."
Some Shoulder pads and eye parts are one side only. I still need to get more achievements to unlock the last set of parts so I can't say for sure though.

GI: Guard Impact
You can parry an opponent's attacks by pressing 6+G against mid and high attacks, or 3+G against mid and low attacks. And after a successful GI, you have a chance to hit the opponent without retaliation. But be careful: if the opponent is quick, he can Guard Impact the next attack.
A big change to Soul Calibur 4 is the new GI ( 4+G for mids and highs, 1+G for mids and lows). This GI knocks your opponent to the floor, forcing a great wakeup game. This is most effective when an opponent is near a wall on his right side, because a successful parry will send him into the wall, stunning him. Follow up with a free combo!
The SC4 new GI, does that override and replace the GI's I'm used to from SC2? Or is it in addition to?

Knowing how to poke thru kilik or what to use to close in on seigfried Should be a high priority if you plan on playing online. I played about 25 matches last night and about 18 were killik or seigfried matches(I realized my SC game needed work due to this). I also would work on guard impacts they are infinitely useful.
I am gonna be brushing up my game some since I lost quite a few matches last night but the ones that I did win were mostly vs higher ranked guys who seemed to be spamming.
In regards Kilik online, I have reached a point of indecision. I'm a Kilik player, and I believe myself to be decent enough with him (I at least don't try to spam moves. Oftentimes I prefer to have variety in my attacks). However, I have heard that many use him online and one or two moves. Because of all these people I was wondering if it would be better for me to switch to one of my secondaries for online falling among all the Kilik-users, or just screw what people think of me and play as my favorite guy?

I just played a couple randoms online last night, and if you so much as know how to block, you'll stand out from the rest.
Some douchebag put his cursor on his CaS characters, waited for me to pick Siegfried, then moved immediately to Taki. He got a ringout on me in the first round, since I was foolishly trying to GI his button mashing. Then I just went full offense, and he never once blocked for the rest of the match.
So, basically, just use whoever you like, and your skills will be what distinguish you.
