It wasn't the overall idea itself or the awkwardness of trying to explain why Yoda and Vader decided to fight in a Soul Calibur tournament.
It was the terrible writing. I'd have to go replay it again to remember the specifics but it was just hilariously terrible, "He sensed a powerful disturbance, but decided it wasn't a very big deal."

Yeah, I'm not liking the online too much.
I've yet to get a 5 bar connection and at 3-4 bars I have just enough lag that a Raphael or Yoda chessehead winds up pwning me unless I just 8 way run the entire time. As soon as I try to to anything that's even the least bit risky or lacking in priority I get nailed with either 6BBB (in the case of Raph) or 66B (in the case of Yoda).
Add into the fact that it's taken me an average of 5 minutes to get into a match (even creating my own session) and I think I'll not be getting online all that much.

Alright, tried to make the Critical Finisher section clearer. I also added some of my own notes and observations, which you may or may not find helpful.
I also added some notes and tips for the Tower of Lost Souls section. You may or may not find these helpful, too.
I'll be keeping an eye out for tips and strategies for unlocking the items in Tower of Lost Souls. If anyone has a good way to beat some of the harder floors then post them and I'll be sure to add them to the OP.
Going to screw around some more, I guess. I'd play on live, but I never got a Gold membership. I've been considering just making a new silver one so I can screw around until the weekend, when I'll probably get a real Gold membership. What do you guys think? Also, which floors are you guys having the most trouble on right now? So I can try and figure them out. Or anything else, in general, that you're having trouble with.
Are you having trouble getting the items or just beating the floors?
If you're having trouble getting the items check the OP, I put some stuff in there about the first floor (you probably won't like it, though, since it makes the rest ever harder).
If you're having trouble just surviving then work on your blocking. Alternately, equip your characters with HP Drain skills and health and defense boosting items. The easiest way to get the HP Drain is to use the Priest default setup and then modify from their, since it can be hard to get enough Gauge for HP Drain.
So, I've been giving online play a shot, and it's been a terrible experience so far. I've got 4 wins and 11 losses. That's not a very good record, but I don't think I'm all that terrible of a player.
Here are my two biggest problem:
Of the 15 matches I've played so far, about 10-12 were against Kilik, and he's my least favorite character to play against. He seems to be the best when playing at a beginner's level, because all of his attacks automatically combo both high and low, making him impossible to block because I don't know those combos well enough to time my blocks. And most of those combos throw in a side swipe for good measure, making it impossible to sidestep and get something in that way. Basically, Kilik is rocking my face... and 70% of my opponents are picking Kilik. Jesus Christ, anonymous internet people, be original and TRY one of the other characters! I'm playing almost all of my matches against the one guy I can't figure out how to block.
And that leads to my second problem, which is even more annoying than the first. In EACH of my 15 matches so far... not one of my opponents has ever blocked. I keep blocking, sidestepping, trying out combos, but nobody I fight is doing any of that stuff. They're just spamming maybe 3-4 attacks continuously. Never once has anybody tried to block anything. On only a few occasions have I seen a throw attempted.
So basically, it's been frustrating. I have a terrible record and I'm not having fun.
That's kinda the problem with online. People can spam attacks and get away with it. In the arcades or playing against someone on the same system that sort of opponent would be easy. Most mashers start combos with high or mid attacks because it doesn't require stick input, so you just GI circles around them. Online however, even the most minuscule amount of lag can throw GI timing off.
Advise against those opponents, the non-block non-strafing mashers: Pick Siegfried and 66B spam all day everyday. I'm serious. It really shouldn't work, but it does. You probably won't feel good about it, but at least you can hope your next match won't be the same way.
I was pleased to learn that my editor would be sending me this game via mail for review (free game+money, woo!), even though I really wanted the PS3 version, but he's only getting the 360 version.
Problem is his distributor shipped the games late. He's not getting it until around Friday, I probably won't receive it until a full week later. So even though it'll be a bit late, I hope you'll look forward to my review.
The worst part is the waiting, since I wanted this game. How is it so far? Best SC ever (II) or a disappointing butchering of tiers (III)? Are the controls for the 360 pad as good as a dualshock, or do you have problems keeping both hands on the controller when looking at Ivy's abnormally large, shiny bouncy melons?
But what I'm most interested in is the character customization. How diverse is it this time? I was hoping that this time the possibilities would be near limitless, and could come in handy if I go through with one of my novel ideas, so I can use the creation feature to help create some original characters, outfits and all.
Any supersecret characters revealed? Kratos? Albedo?

That's odd, I've seen a good variety of characters being used. Maybe try playing at a different time of day or on non-ranked games. Although the best part of them spamming attacks is it gets really easy to guard impact them (assuming you have 4 bars or better, 3 is basically impossible unless you have ESP) and do a punishing combo. It's also possible you were just fighting the same guy a ton of times.

SC4 is significantly different from it's predecessors. I'd say you should take some time to get used to the new system, screw around in singleplayer, and in training mode.
As for Kilik scrubs. Well, once you've got a better grasp you shouldn't have as much of a problem. Be aware that B moves (horizontal) have almost no tracking anymore, so it should be simple enough to step and then counter when they attack. If they're only using 4 or 5 moves then just learn how to block or avoid them.
And as you say, scrubs don't block. This is their problem, and they're susceptible to simple mind games. Abuse lows, don't let them get up once you know them down, don't even bother going for a throw until you've thoroughly trained them to start blocking.
The most important thing is, once you recognize a scrub, to not give them any credit. Just assume they're not going to block or dodge until they actually do start blocking or dodging. Don't try anything to complex, don't try and set things up more than one move in advance.
Which character are you using? I may be able to help you more if I knew.
I'm using Hilde. The thing that's been working so far against these Kilik guys (they are different people, I've been checking) is standing far away and spamming the spear attacks, which seem to have a longer range than the Kilik's staff. But then I feel lame and try and get in close, and then I can never get back out again.
What's the best way to practice guard impacts? I've only been doing regular blocks because I can't get the timing down.
Kilik is by far the most played online. Everyone turns him into a chick though (sigh).
I have a lovely 33% win record, but I'm still learning Siegfried's timing online. I fought one Mitsurugi player that must have been tourney level. He had 7 wins 0 loss at level 2/3, he got 2 perfects on me Everyone else just picks a fast character and spams. I've gotten good timing parries, but it's still a challenge.
The most common moves in their arsenal are B,B (two mid vertical swings) and 6A,A,A (three hit horizonal high rush).
First off, make absolutely sure you're only getting into matches with 4 or more bars. If it's any lower, don't hesitate to duck out.
B,B is a linear and slow move, but due to online lag, they can spam it because lag can affect your reaction to it. In SCII, you can guard impact the second hit after blocking the first. I'm not sure if that'll work here, but I'll give it a try and let you know what the results are.
6A,A,A is a combo guaranteed on counterhit. But it all hits high. Duck under it with Hilde and counter with WR A+B to stun them after the third hit passes over your head. Follow up with 1K,K and 2A+B,K.
Hilde can spam just as well, I'd say. Her 6B,B,B string is a strong ranged counterhit combo. Her 1K,K should also be very dangerous online.
Christ, one of my friends is a beast with Yoshimitsu. The fact that I play as Siegfried all the time doesn't make it much easier, since he's all over the place while I swing my surfboard around.
I still can't download the SCIV update. (Although I did download that PSN update, thanks Roxtar)
This is really kinda pissing me off. I never had a problem with the internet on my 360, but I get errors left and right with my PS3. What gives?
I checked the GameFAQs message boards and it looks like a few other people have had the problem but I don't think anyone that has experienced the issue has managed to get it to work yet. Very frustrating, I really wanted to get online and get my butt kicked .
What do you guys think about Vader? I've been playing him a bit and he seems too slow to really keep up with any of the regular SC characters. Apprentice is a fucking bitch though.

Ivy is completely different now. Look forward to relearning her almost from scratch.
Stance changes can now be done almost any time. There aren't as many specific moves that switch stances, so you'll have to do it yourself. Just press B+K or A+K during a move and you'll switch stances on the way out. This even works with grabs. How you use this will be up to you, though, and that's where the real challenge comes in.
More info, and a chart:
It works as a flow: WP -- CL -- SW -- SE. You can go one step left or right. During an attack hit A+K to go one left, B+K to go one right. Each stance change is accompanied by a flash of RED (A+K) or BLUE (B+K), and there's a delay before you can do another stance change. The easiest (lol?) way to get from SW to WP, or visa versa, right now is to just do CS and then stance change twice during the animation. You can also try for WP WRB,B, but it's harder to get them both.
So, good luck with that.
Also, there's a new JF (fastest input) for CS which does 100 damage.
