Yeah, trying to beat this the first play is too hard, but not impossible. Mess around the mall until the three days are up or until you get bored. [Start a new game.] Your PP and level will carry over to the next play. You'll move faster, have more health and can carry more items.

When you can beat the gun shop owner on the first day is a good indicator that you're ready to move on. Fuck that guy.

Generally, save survivors when you can. You'll get the most PP that way. Defeating Psychos earns a nice chunk and slicing up cultists with small chainsaws earns 1000 PP each.

Well so far I'm lvl5 and I've only been fooling around in the first zombie invested area. I was traumatized from my first time plaing back in 06 when I tried to do the missions and the convicts fucked me up. Like I understand now you need to "grind" for lvls now but its kinda slow.

You don't ever need to really grind. Just save survivors when you can... And kill the psychos if you can. ~Level 20 you can probably start working on the main storyline.

It gets better. I had the same problems you did with the convicts. I'm lvl 17 now, and I definitely feel a lot more assured going from point A to B.

I say the best way to grind for levels is pretty much doing what you would do for the zombie genocider achievement. Driving through the maintenance tunnels running over zombies over and over.

once you start unlocking the cool moves the game becomes really fun.

I'm level 22 now and I'm looking to go after the convicts now. They cost me Leah at one point and I'm looking to visit some justified wrath on their punk heads.

Any tips on finishing off this scum?

Seriously, the small chainsaws work them over good and you don't have to worry about aiming. Wait for them to get stuck against a tree (it shouldn't take long) and then slice the fuckers up. You might take some damage from the gunner if you're not careful and you should always watch out for when the jeep suddenly reverses.

Taking out Adam is a must for two reasons...

I keep saying this but nobody ever listens.

To kill the convicts hassle free at level 1 just run to the car park, get in the red car and drive head first into the jeep. They will die, you will not. Then reverse out and drive round to hit the back which kills the gunner.

You say 'hassle free' as if running through the park and trying not to get killed by the convicts (if they should notice you) and then getting in the car and driving it all the way back and trying to run into the jeep is the simplest thing to accomplish for everybody early in the game...

If you run along the edge of the park..yeah. Also running past a tree is enough to thwart their pathfinding for 5 minutes. Plus you must be running through the park anyway or you wouldn't be complaining about having to deal with them, it isn't any more difficult to run there than between plaza entrances.

And since they are trying to drive directly at you, driving into them is not a difficult feat to accomplish.

Another way to take out the convicts relatively easily is if you get a sniper rifle early and just peg them while they're trying to drive through a tree - but before they notice you. Just have to be aware of the zombie crowds nearby while aiming.

Old thread resurface! I just started this and am having but also seeing where people's frustrations lie. I also just let the guy I rescued from the rollercoaster die before he showed me the thing he wanted to show me. Then I saved. I'm bad at not clicking on spoilers sometimes and I want to be restarting now right? That seems quite an important thing he had to show me there.

I'd recommend just exploring the mall and finding where the best weapons and items are at this point. Keep fighting zombies and leveling up until you die, then restart. You'll keep your level when you restart and you'll know your way around a bit better.

Just spend your first few atempts at the game dicking around, killing zombies and psycos on a whim, scrambling for deadlines and not being too bothered if you miss them. There are like 5 different endings, you will learn the layout of the mall, have fun with no pressure if you just ignore the scoops, grab achivements, level up, etc. All good reasons to just take it easy and not stress over getting the 'best' ending all in one go at a low level.

I went though the game twice before I bothered to do the main storyline. I can't imagine how hard the game is when you have tight deadlines, a low level and don't know the mall layout.

In terms of rescuing survivors in that area, you haven't just fucked yourself, you've fisted yourself. Unless you like dealing with babysitting survivors past the convicts every night, I'd go along with the advice to avoid story mode, fuck around, level up, maybe achievement whore a bit, and play for reals on death.

If they haven't done the bit where the gate to the Entrance Plaza is opened, then they should do the story at least up to that point. Otherwise, there will be absolutely no way to avoid the convicts.

Mainly, whether you completed the case files, if you're on the helipad at Noon, and if you fail or not on a specific storyline section. There's 5 in total.

Also: When you complete all the case files, you need to see a certain someone between 10 and noon to get the A over the B ending, and unlock Overtime which is a continuation of A's ending.

And, only Frank's level carries on, I think. But being able to move 3-4 times as fast with maxxed out speed means getting the shortcuts unlocked is a zip.

Do I need to start over? It's day 2 6:00 AM and the Rescue mission is on my list. BUT- I only have 3 bullets in a handgun- and a lead pipe. How can I take out Carlito with that crazy gun? I'm thinking I need to start over and use my time the night before to arm myself with weapons. Maybe venture to the gun shop? Let me know- I'd like to not have to start over, but he keeps destroying me. (oh I'm level 10)

Try and kill some cops before going there. They might drop another pistol.

There is an SMG in the fountain in Al Fresca Plaza and one in the storage room in the Maintanance Tunnels.

There is a Katana on the awning just outside the window of the coffee shop.

Killing Adam nets you one of the most powerful weapons in the game.

You probably aren't equiped enough, but killing the Convicts and taking their machine gun gets you a pretty decent weapon.

Adding certain books to your inventory will increase the staying power of some weapons. Get Criminal Biography from the same shop with the Japanese Tourists to increase the staying power of a katana. Combine it with Engineering and Entertainment from Bachman's Books (the large bookstore in Paradise Plaza) and you can triple the effectiveness of Adam's Small Chainsaws. Up to 2700 hits...

Or, if you don't think you'll be able to stock up before the scoop ends, you can either save and quit to start over at your current level or you can just ignore the scoops and play until the last day and meet the chopper at a much higher level to start over with. Your call.

    EDIT:
Oops. I forgot to say which store had Criminal Bio...

Having pretty much dropped the game since my last post I made a concerted effort to push through last night and ended up playing for hours. I found the fun! Good God they do their best to hide it from you in the early game though.

I can understand that the whole 'You won't get all the case files in your first run' philosophy. But if that's what they were going for then the bastard hard bosses (Sniper Carlito at low level) shouldn't be placed unavoidabley in your way!

Rescued a bunch of dudes and now I'm moving faster, carrying more and have sussed out a regular food and weapon supply and things are back to being awesome. Completed the second set of casses up to the supermarket and now the rest have expired leaving me free to dick around a bit. Huge grin when I found the antique weapon shop (is there a book to make those last longer?). My go-to weapon is currently the book extended lifespan baseball bat as it's widely available and works well in large crowds. Any other suggestions?

The book-extended katana is pretty deadly.

By far the best melee weapon is Adam's chainsaw. It's kills almost everything in one or two hits, respawns, and is covered by three different books. If you get all three books, it lasts 27 times longer than normal, which is probably overkill. Even with just two books, though, it lasts 9 times longer than normal.

To make the never ending quest to find weapons a lot easier you can find 3 books that all add more lifespan to the mini chainsaws that you get from the boss in Wonderland Plaza. Really makes things a lot easier.

Good to see that you are not making the same mistake as me and trying to get all cases done on the first run. Speaking of which I need to fire that up again and finish off the cases that I never did the first time! And God help me but one of these days I'm going to go for the Saint achievement.
