[Slide On!]Perfect Stride Continuum: Free First Person Single Player Puzzle Racer Mod
Well that title's a mouthful. It got you into the thread, though. Mission accomplished, little buddy.
You're here because you misclicked or because you're curious about "Perfect Stride Continuum," right? Just the facts, I guess:
Perfect Stride Continuum is a mod for Half-Life 2. If you don't have Half-Life 2 or something else on the Source engine that you can install a mod on, buy The Orange Box and come back once you've finished everything included. Have fun! May your journey be swift.
Perfect Stride Continuum is a single player mod. If you have any friends, you'll want to divest yourself of them. Quickly now, burn those bridges! Sleep with their significant other or something. That's the fastest way and if you have any friends who are of the opposite sex it'll be an eye opening experience.
Perfect Stride Continuum is 5.5 megabytes. Byte sized!
PSC is a first person puzzle racer. Sort of. You're not racing anybody. You're just... moving. Through a race-course-ish thing. Breaking orbs!
The orbs you break are not orbs. They're cubes. I know, man. I didn't do it. Just go with it.
Perfect Stride Continuum is a puzzle because you have to break the majority of the orbcubes to finish the level.
Perfect Stride Continuum is a racer because you break these cubes by moving through the level, speedily, sometimes, like over ramps.
Perfect Stride Continuum is first person because that's what they say.
--You made it past the giant list so you deserve a picture--
You're probably having trouble picturing exactly how this works. Here's how: you hit forward. Your man moves forward. Now you strafe in the direction you want to head, kind of. And you start strafing. But to build up speed, you turn your mouse in the direction you're moving. But you've got to turn it quickly to build up speed. But not too quickly. Because if you turn it too fast, you lose all your speed.
So yeah I figured that I'd let everyone know about this because it's completely nuts and awesome and it's a thousand times more innovative than anything on the PS3 (other than Folding@home) and anything on the 360 (other than the "can we sell a console that Red Ring of Deaths itself) and anything on the Wii (maybe not anything on the Wii) and etc. It's different! It's fun! It's quirky! It's free! It's a fast download! What do you have to lose? NOTHING.
Adjust the sensitivity of your mouse upwards until you can comfortably turn your view quickly without moving your hand/arm too much! It will save you some trouble, well, moving your hand/arm too much. But don't put your sensitivity too high! Then you'll turn too sharply and bleed speed like the Bush Administration bleeds credibility.
Beware the humble wall, for it can be your downfall when you least expect it! You'll lose a good amount of speed when you collide with these seemingly harmless surfaces, so stay away from anything flat and vertical and you'll do A-OK!
I'm not sure if it was designed to be challenging, but I've just gotten all of the orbs on all of the levels. Then again, the movement mechanics will be familiar to anyone who is used to circle strafing in competitive FPSs.
We should all have video competitions to see who can do the most stylish shit. Posting demos would be dandy, because people who don't have the game won't want to watch AVIs anyway.
You can change directions in the air! You can do this in most first person shooters but it's good to keep in mind. Changing directions midflight is a necessity!

This sounds incredible. I don't care what the game is about, but if it's so good i have to burn bridges to play it, I might just do that. Soon as I get home!

Excellent, I will be sure to try this out. I love this sort of mod. Reminds me a little bit of Kreedz Climbing.
That think he's holding in the screenshots... is that... is that a grappling hook?
want!
Unfortunately, the grappling hook is just kind of a flavor weapon; it's just a melee weapon for atmosphere purposes. The game itself I have a blast with, though, and the jumping puzzles can be frustrating, but are so gratifying to complete. Fun to do them with a friend, too.
Put on some music or something if you're having trouble, because otherwise you're probably going to go crazy and carve Norse runes into someone's flesh while the footstep sound plays over and over in your head. I suggest Tchaikovsky!
Not in the sense that I'm making fun of your lack of skillz, but that's kind of crazy. Circle strafing is a pretty simple concept to anyone who's played CPMA (Quake 3 competitive mod). Then again, anyone who hasn't might think it's a tad more complicated than it really is.
I don't know if you've ever circle strafed but when you do that you turn in the direction opposite your strafing. This is the exact opposite of circle strafing.

This makes me want Mirror's Edge to be out.
Momentum-based gameplay? So going to try it out.

I used to groundstrafe in CS by setting friction to a negative value. This looks like that's what they did.
I am going to download this later.

Download that, put it in /steamapps/sourcemods/stride/ and watch it ingame with "playdemo testdemo.dem" in the console. Then enjoy my awesome jump!

Still enjoying the mod though. I hope this guy makes more.
