'08 PC Tournaments: Rules & Info

ghrogghrog Registered User regular
edited September 2008 in PAX Archive
We're super excited to bringing you a sneak peak of Battlefield Heroes to PAX this year. Additional details will be announced soon.

*Note that all information in this thread is subject to change between now and the end of August.

This thread is for rules, registration guidelines, updates, schedules, and questions regarding PC tournaments ONLY. This thread will NOT cover BYOC activities (other than the WoW tournament), console freeplay, console tournament, or any other events, including handheld, tabletop, etc.

Schedule
Friday, August 29th

4:00pm - 7:30pm Call of Duty 4 (5v5)
8:00pm - 1:00am Team Fortress 2 (6v6)

Saturday, August 30th
12:00pm - 4:00pm World of Warcraft (3v3) (BYOC Only)
5:00pm - 12:00am Battlefield Heroes (6v6)

Sunday, August 31st
11:00am - 5:00pm Starcraft: Brood War (1v1)

Registration
  • Registration for ALL PC tournaments begins on Friday, August 29th at 2pm, right outside of the PC tournament area.
  • Only full teams will be signed up. It is your job to join and/or create a team, we're not your babysitter. It is recommended you linger around the pc tournament area at signup time, and at tournament time and your chances of joining a team will be Pretty Good.
  • Check-in time will begin 45 minutes prior to a tournament's starting time. Competitors are required to check-in at least 15 minutes before the tournament's start time. If you/your team doesn't check in during this time, your spot will be opened for another person/team.

General Information
  • All tournaments minus the World of Warcraft tournament will be exclusively using tournament computers provided by Intel. You will be allowed to bring over your mice and keyboards and customize your configurations, you will not be allowed to load software of any kind.
  • If you sign up for a tournament, please be there. If you decide you will be unable to, check in with us and let us know so we can open up a spot for someone else.
  • As a general rule, it's a good idea to show up at least 20 minutes in advance of each tournament, and that will give you time to configure your settings and warm up before the tournament begins.
  • We should be able to sit teams next together for the most part, but in cases where we can't, Ventrilo servers will be available. Feel free to ask if you'd like one and we'll provide you with password information.
  • In team games, please take care in choosing a team captain. Pick someone responsible. Being tall or otherwise easily found in crowd can also help.

We do have one error with that.

In the WoW tournament, you won't actually be creating characters...I know, I know, the idea of a level 1 pvp tournament sounds epic to the Xtreme, but you're going to be stuck with using level 70 premades armed with whatever phat lewtage you can dig up from special pvp vendors.

    I know, I know...you're all very disappointed.

BigRed's right, don't look too deeply into that. The truth is, I've been pushing for a retro-tournament since 2005 but it never really came together. With everyone psyched about Starcraft 2, we thought it'd be fun to go back to Starcraft 1 and that combined with no real compelling RTS's after World in Conflict just seemed to present a good opportunity.

    Sounds good to me!

    Level 70* medic/pyro LFG!

*(WoW scale of skill and experience)

I'm alone, so I am looking for 5 other people that I can play with.

I got mad medic and pyro skillz.

As a pyro, team with me with an uber medic and I will devistate the enemy and I will either clear the area or
retreat with my medic intact. I can keep your sentries safe and when I'm not on defense I push HARD towards
    the goal.

As a medic I am fanatastic at alerting my buddy to danger, especially when it comes to spies. I almost never get
stabbed when I am on the lookout for spies and I'm always looking. I am great at taking care of myself and I
have been known to kill enemy demomen and pyros if my buddy is otherwise occupied.

I am also great on coming up with plans and executing them. If we are seated at the same table as our enemy,
I will come up with a code that changes so that they can't figure it out.

i'm really, really curious why they added ctf maps and took out shit like gravelpit(attack/defend)

they follow CAL rules, include the official CEVO map (mach4), and then disregard some of the maps people like most? :/

should get rid of ctf_well and add gravelpit, or ditch mach4 and get gravelpit. fuck, ditch anything and get GRAVELPIT. gravelpit is easily one of the most strategic maps in the game. :(

What does BYOC mean? I have been wondering forever. I want to play in the WoW tournament, but if this BYOC doesn't let me, then poo.

I assume it means Bring Your Own Computer, which would put me out of the tournament...

I would do Brood War, but I play casual. Looks like I wont be in any tournaments this year...

I am possibly overlooking it, but what about class creation? Will there be some set amount of time to do this before the match starts? Will the profiles we're using have all of the weapons unlocked? FYI, if you've never played the game before, the 3 classes you can choose from a level 1 account are so terrible it's not even fun.

I'd check to see if CAL wrote something about this, but their stupid site is down again.

    TF2 folks sure are picky.

Matches need to be quick to accommodate a larger number of players. This means that maps like Gravel Pit, Goldrush, or Dustbowl aren't viable, as they require teams play both sides in order to be fair and all three maps frequently result in ties.

Blame Valve. If they fixed the scoring system (stopwatch mode, hi!) these maps would at least be possible if the tournament had more time. But taking a lot longer AND having a high chance of ties? Not gonna happen.

I do like Gravel Pit though. Probably the most fun of all the maps while not having the zergy spam of Dustbowl or Goldrush and having decent asymmetrical balance.

    Oh, one more thing.

    You gonna get served.

    uh, yeah

stopwatch mode pretty much eliminates any "long" rounds. i've never had a gpit match go longer than a badlands match

badlands is a fucking long map.

for gpit: 2 attacking, 2 defending for each team

match ends up taking about... 40 minutes? 50 at the most? that's pretty on par/shorter than every other map.

    too long. :(
40-50 minutes if you switch sides; we're looking at matches of 20 minutes, not 50. Which is why all the maps on the list are symmetrical, so there is no side-switching; best of 3, etc. We're budgeting our time. I'm really surprised no one has pointed out the 16 team cap on COD4. http://forums.penny-arcade.com/showpost.php?p=6494142&postcount=6

As far as a prize, the prizes will be PAX tickets to the top 3 people in the tournament. Tickets can be exchanged for different prizes at the prize booth. Such as video games, computer hardware, books, shirts, and tons of misc stuff.

You can only get into BYOC by bying a BYOC ticket... although those are all sold out, But you dont need that for tournaments.

As I said in your other thread, all tournaments are played on Intel provided tournament PCs
