Given that Parasite Eve 2 was basically a PSX Resident Evil with some RPG elements, dare I hope that Parasite Eve 3 will be basically Resident Evil 4 with some RPG elements? :D

    That would be beautiful.

    BAM.

Appears to be a third person shooter. And intense.

Japanese official site opens. Not much on it though. http://www.square-enix.co.jp/3rd_birthday/

Seems like there'll be some sort of blow out in dengeki playstation next week on the 3rd Birthday so until then.

It looks like a hybrid of Resident Evil 4 and Parasite Eve 2. Good enough for me.

So how did they lose the rights to the Parasite Eve name?

Square made it so what happened there exactly, anyone got an answer on that?

Wikipedia says it's because this game is a spin-off rather than a full fledged Parasite Eve game. Seems like odd reasoning.

That makes no sense at all.

Not like other games and media have had spin offs but were forced to use another game before.

    Strange.

Parasite Eve is based on a book that came out in Japan (the first game vaguely references it as some events that had happened in Japan before the incident in New York).
It's possible whatever rights they had to the name have lapsed since they haven't made a game in a decade.

I'm actually surprised this wasn't cancelled. Isn't this the first we've heard of it since 2008?

I thought the last reports also said it was a cellphone game, so double surprise here.

So dudes, between this and Peace Walker and Maverick Hunter X and ys VII and a whole buncha other shit I've got to tally up it's finally time I got me a PSP. What're my best options and bets?

Well, didn't Nomura say he'd like to work on a shooter game now? This would be the one.

I don't own a PSP, but I'm in the boat with Sorenson. Excluding the GO, the PSP-3000 would probably be the best model out there?

Unless you wanna do custom firmware, which I have to say, is DEFINITELY something you should consider. You can even convert any PS1 game to work on the PSP; carry the entire Parasite Eve saga in your pocket whenever you want. PSP 2000's the best bet for that.

Is the display improvement over the 2000 really as great as it's being made out to be? I'm not exactly sure I want to mess around with the software lest something fuck up big time, and if the 3000 really IS that much easier to see and is that much nicer on the eyes, well, that takes priority for this half-blind bastard.

New Parasite Eve?! Fuck yes! I loved the first game. It was incredibly unique in it's setting and battle system, and Aya was (is) freaking hot.

I'm rather puzzled by this whole bodyjacking thing though. If this is the motochondria's doing, then how the hell is it changing the clothes of the body she jacks?

What happened to mitochondria giving her cool powers like giant lasers and the ability to turn into a naked blue angel?

If you're okay with going purely digital, get a Go. Best screen, best controls, smaller & lighter, and other niceties like the Pause feature & Blutooth support.

If you don't want to go pure digital, get a 3000 or 2000 depending on which bothers you more - scanlines (the 3000 has this problem) or blurring (2000 has this problem). I wouldn't recommend a 1000 since it has less RAM than the other models which results in longer load times.

The big problem with the Go is that there's still a lot of good titles not on the digital store.

    Some details, finally:
The interview started with the basics. The site asked Tabata if The 3rd Birthday is a sequel in the Parasite Eve series. Tabata's answer may be surprising. "It carries over some elements from the Parasite Eve and Parasite Eve 2 game settings, but it's not a sequel. We'd like you to think of it as a new title that features Aya Brea."

Tabata made note of some similarities to past Parasite Eve titles, though. Asked to describe the game content of The 3rd Birthday, he said "Parasite Eve is a game where you use guns, so this is game where you also use guns, and at the same time you can enjoy true action. It's not the type of shooting where you aim a targeting reticule at the enemy, but lock-on action where you lock on to the enemy with a lock-on button."

Action is a major element of the game, explained Tabata. This lead him to a discussion of the game's new "Overdive" system, which he said is intertwined throughout the entirety of game.

As detailed by Tabata, Overdive is an ability that lets you take over the consciousness of others. Using the skill, you can freely control other people. The basics of The 3rd Birthday's gameplay has you change your currently controlled character in realtime, intermixed with your combat actions.

Kamikokuryou fielded some questions about the game's world view and visual elements. The game is set in New York and has such visual elements as "expression of destruction" and "fantasy elements." Visually, one effect the art staff is using is increased contrast.

"We're aiming for the highest level of PSP graphics," he said.

Regarding Aya Brea, Famitsu noted that the character has a sexy image going all the way back to Parasite Eve, which showed her in a shower scene. The staff is paying a lot of attention to the character's sexy image, said Kamikokuryou. They hope to better convey her reality and charm thanks to the more advanced technology they have at their disposal.

Tabata had some bad news here, though: "At present, there's no shower scene in the scenario." Famitsu did plead with them to consider adding one.

The 3rd Birthday may be a portable game, but it looks like we can expect a console class experience from it. "We're not really keeping in mind that it's for the PSP," said Tabata. "The game setting is at the level where it could be played on a console. It's the feeling of we've somehow managed to fit that onto PSP."

Kamikokuryou noted that Final Fantasy XIII staff members became core members of The 3rd Birthday's development staff once the RPG's development ended. "The creation of resources is PS3 class," he said. "On this point, we feel we may be able to offer something that crosses a barrier."

Closing off, Tabata said, "We're making a game that won't be defeated by foreign games. Please be on the lookout for it." Kamikokuryou said, "We're putting our full efforts in the graphics as well. We're confident it's a game that will pierce your heart, so please look forward to it."

Apparently Square no longer own the 'Parasite Eve' name, so don't expect to see the first two games on the PSN, uh, ever.

So the new mechanic is going to be like Siren's "sightjacking" - only you'll be the one controlling the jacked character (I guess it's also like Geist's possession mechanic, if you want to put it that way). It's good to see the dev team's putting a lot of effort into it, although I'm kind of worried about how much of the established story and such are going to be impacted by losing the PE name (not much, hopefully).

Ahhhhh shit. The games I want are on the versions I might have problems seeing, and the version I can see well with and control best might not have the games I want and force me to do that.

What about TV outputting stuff for the 3000, does it look OK? Defeats the purpose of a handheld, but you gotta' do what you gotta' do...

From Nomura in Famitsu this week:
    The 3rd Birthday

    - The game was moved from mobiles to the PSP because the scope and quality was too large for phones.
    - Aya will use a different sort of power in this game, instead of the Parasite Energy featured in the original PE games.
    - You can enter into battle with a sleeveless outfit, but the defense will be really low.
    - The game is an action RPG.
    - Nomura understands that there are high expectations of a shower scene based on the history of the series.
    - Apparently the defensive property of clothing (armor) are directly related to how exposed Aya is, so if you want high defensive gear, she's not going to be showing much skin.
    - The game is self-contained and is meant to be a high quality single player experience.
    - There is no multiplayer whatsoever.
    - Battery consumption on the game will be high.

My memory may be fuzzy, since it was like, 10 years ago, but I recall the makers of the GBA version of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater bragging that their game was so awesome that it drained your batteries faster.

Not very well. I've started it several times and it's never actually managed to hold my attention long enough for me to finish it, which is saying a lot since it's a pretty short game. Combat just isn't very fun (it's basically an ATB system where you only have 1 character and have to wait for your turn to come around but you can move around and try to dodge enemy attacks somewhat).

PE2, on the other hand, is a great game if you like old school survival horror games with a little RPG mixed in.

I've always preferred PE1 to PE2 (which is essentially an RE clone). Though I do have to warn you that Aya runs incredibly slow in PE1.

I'm also kind of disheartened that this new one is taking some of the more questionable things from PE2 and making a bigger deal out of them (ie. Aya not aging and the shower scene).
That coupled with the tiny details about the plot from a few years ago when it was about time warps or whatever the fuck really make me weary of this game.
