The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
So, I've only recently started posting in the forums with some regularity, and ceased my five-year span of lurkage. I notice that the way I tend to identify a lot of posters is not so much by their handle, but by their icon. I wish to be memorable as well, for internet fame is what we all aspire to, and so I realize that I need a user icon.
Unfortunately, I've always been really terrible at finding/choosing icons. Where do you guys usually go to find suitably sized images for your work? Also, can you think of anything that I would find just awesome?
I'll second (third?) just making your own. You can use something like GIMP or Paint.NET, both of which are free.
I change my av and sig every so often, because Allah loves wonderous variety. My av is now the crying kitten I use as my Steam picture, because it amuses me; my sig will make no fucking sense to anyone except me and one other person, who will probably be both embarrassed and delighted by it. Before today, my av was a road sign from New Zealand which seemed to show a man shaking his fist in angry defiance at a collapsing cliff, while my sig was the punchline of a comic about TF2. But a lot of people find something they like and stick with it, so much so that I now permanently associate certain people with their avatars. Like urahonky with Simon Pegg, and Thanatos with... whoever that guy is who looks kinda like an angry Tom Hanks.
Your avatar and sig don't need to mean anything, or be profound, or be amazingly attractive: they are yours, and to hell with what anyone else thinks. So don't settle for grabbing something off a pre-made shelf (especially since you'll probably need to resize it anyway, avatar size limits aren't exactly universal). Find something you like, chop it down to 64x64 (avatar) or 500x80 (sig), and revel in your individuality.
1. Pop in comedy DVD of your choosing
2. Screencap someone making a funny face
3. use an image editor to crop and resize
4. host and link
5. we all make fun of you for your stupid avatar.
yeah if you just pick something and stick with it for long enough, it doesn't matter what you picked unless it's horribly stupid

Mine was made for me by someone who knew me very well, and I've been using it for three years (it just can't be four years since I joined, but I suppose the calendar doesn't lie). I went through a number of avatars before this one, and I've thought about changing since, but really nothing feels like home like this one does.
You should find an image you like and make one yourself, or have a good friends make one for you.

Edit: Oh wait, yeah. I should probably offer some advice.
I don't have an avatar now. Grifter took it away. I'm pretty sure it was Grifter, anyway. And I sort of never got around to getting a new one. But I'd say to just think of something that you like, that also suits the general mood of your post. Pick an avatar that gives your words a voice.
ceres- I have no friends, and even those people I associate with regularly have barely evolved the ability to speak, and are not yet to "drawing" or "photoshopping."
You don't need to find images in 64x64. You can easily resize them using Windows XP Image Resizer or any other tool.
But your signature made me think of this when I read the thread subject.
Ha, love it. Well, it's a bit small, but I was reminded of something someone did draw for me once, and thus I now use it. I doubt anyone else can even really tell what it is, but I'll know at least!

I actually had a towel for a long time. Left it at a girl's house in NY City, and she stopped taking my towels when I asked her to mail it to me when I went back to the dorms.

Took me ages to find the site again - it was one of the promo sites for the film in 2005, but the original domain has gone.
I usually just hit up the old GIS when I'm looking for an image to use for an avatar on forums. Of course I usually have an idea of what I'm looking for anyway. On most forums, such as here, I use various images of Oliver Platt, who played Jimmy King in the move Ready to Rumble (among other awesome movies/characters) where I got my name from.
My avatar -- when I had an avatar -- was actually made by Ceres, I believe. I was going through some bad times, so she openly abused her mod powers to cheer me up with a new surprise avatar. It was a 2px border around empty pixels. It was clever, and it did what a good avatar should do; help reinforce your online identity.
So my advice is to pick something that reinforces your online identity, I guess.

I made mine from a screen grab...and it's stupid.

But I might revel in the fact that I could be annoying other readers as well.

Mostly I just wanted to tell that story.
Is a good story. I still love you.
