We were discussing whether we should tell you guys to have more demomen/snipers on your team. I mean, as soon as rakuen showed up he slowed down the rapetrain for a while.

This is why I team-swap so much.

That, and I like killing my former teammates.

    Especially when Rogueknight Kritzkriegs me.

Last night was a near constant rapetrain on more than just dbheights. I don't think anyone was intentionally stacking, I think it was just bad luck combined with several new players(there were at least 8 other people I'd never seen before, though that doesn't mean they were all new).

Of course, dbheights was the worst, and I ended up quitting fairly early on, and I think giving the ragequit achievement to some lucky pyro. Something about converting the map to Payload makes it exponentially more imbalanced when the teams are uneven, probably because in CP maps, a lucky break can give you a chance to gain a lot of ground at once, while in Payload the front line can really only move as fast as the cart. There was a pretty terrible steamroll on Goldrush earlier, as well.

Wrong the frontline can move without the cart and in some cases its better to have a large group of people ahead so that when the cart comes through the opposing team is distracted.

Payload has a defender advantage. Goldrush frequently shows this, as does db_heights.

if you put too many people forward they cant hold the line long enough to have one or two people move the cart up. the best steamfolls have a significant portion of the team on the cart so it zips along while maybe 3/4 soldiers/scouts move ahead to run interference and supression fire

Moving the front line any reasonable distance means that A)you're outnumbered, because several people have to stay with the cart, so you can't hold it very long, and B) anyone who gets past your front line can sneak up on the cart and slow/stop it's progress, forcing the front line to retreat anyway to get it moving again. In Payload, if you kill most of the enemy team and push forward, by the time they've respawned you generally haven't made any significant progress. In CP, if you kill most the team, you can take the point and they can't take it back.

I like payload maps but too often it becomes "half our team is going to spawncamp you while the other half moves the cart"

also we really need the new version of dbheights in there since spawncamping on 2-2 has really become the only way to get through that final section.

It really depends on the situation, where the bottle necks in the map are.

Like Goldrush 1-2, it's very advantageous to push forward as soon as those gates open and engage the enemy, as long as a couple people remain the cart.

I find that mp_scrambleteams helps things out sometimes. Yesterday the teams were accidentally stacked on dustbowl (or goldrush, not sure) and a quick shuffle of teams actually made it more challenging and fun. An admin has to be present to do it though.

edit: What's new in the... new dbheights?

There has been a test map out for a month now, pl_dbheights_test. It has not been put in rotation on our servers (not sure why). I have it in rotation on one pub. They have been testing the changes for me. That reminds me I need to find out what the results were/are.

From what I've seen, it looks like moving the cart doesn't matter at all in the beginning. If the area isn't secure, you're barely going to be able to move the cart. If it is secure, moving it is trivial. Most of the time, people leave the cart alone and focus on engaging the defense first.

man, pubs. some terrible spy accused me of hacking because I kept looking behind the spawn door on gravel pit and he would always be there waiting. Then I saw him about to stab a sniper at B and I jumped off the roof and nailed him with a mid air crit nade right as he was stabbing, which was pretty lucky. It then lead to the other team complaining about how "its ok if theres a hacker on their team as long as theyre winning" :|
