X-Com is pretty awesome guys, we should talk about it

I mean, seriously. I can kill aliens, make people pick them up and drag their corpses back to my base to be dissected for the greater good of humanity, in turn based tactical combat!

WHY AM I JUST FINDING OUT ABOUT THIS NOW?!

Lets talk about X-Com, especially since this Steam doohickey you guys keep going on about has X-Com: Terror from the Deep for $4.99 and what have you.

What was the third one set in a city? I fucking hated that game because it wasn't the original.

Seriously it was like the Sega Master System version of Ghost Busters.

So it was really shitty except the overhead map was fun.

What the fuck is wrong with the SMS version of Ghostbusters? You better have a really fucking good answer or I will fucking kill you.

Ghostbusters is immeasurably better than Apocalypse, even if you don't account for the 10 year gap between the two. I have a number for an excellent funeral home, you're going to need it.

X-Com is pretty damn awesome. My only complaint is how they handled mind control and the near complete lack of defense against it. It didn't help that you had no idea how good/bad your best soldiers were in the mind defense department until you actually researched it (or encountered enough mind control and noticed them constantly panicking and shit).

It also made the game a great deal less fun when you could use it. Sit in ship, take over people from all over the fucking map... wooooo.... :(

But really, I'm just nitpicking. The game is indeed awesome and I really wish someone would update that shit and re-release it. I'd totally buy it.

I just noticed TftD is $4.99 on Steam a couple of days ago... sorely, sorely tempted. It runs alright in XP, right? I have a copy of DOSBox on my desktop that's is optimized for, and can ONLY launch, X-COM. And yet, I'm not all that good at it. Oh well, masochism is fun :)

I second this motion. You were a fantastic tank last time, and made quite an impressive story of one of the game's earlier battles. From the point of view of the tank.

Apocalypse was just uneven in its released state. It had some really good changes (going prone, simulating full auto instead of just bursts) but had some less stellar ones as well (alien aesthetics for some species, reduced scope).

It was always kind of amusing that you could go raid the police and weapon companies for equipment and they never got made so long as you only stunned their guards, not kill them. You sometimes found unfinished items like the mind shield this way. Makes one wonder just how brutal the IRS must be during an audit for them to not bat an eye at you blatantly robbing them.

The first play I did, I survived the first couple UFO assaults - taking down a couple floaters and Sectoids and only losing six people... then the aliens landed, we went in to take over their UFO, and got slaughtered, so I had to buy a new SkyRunner - and new recruits - and new guns.

    ...

Then the aliens terrorized Chicago. So I responded.

    ...

But I forgot to buy bullets. This game, this fucking game... <3
