Congratulations! I'm glad everything worked out for you! And you better believe that if I see you there in a Wrex mask and a hula skirt, I am definitely getting pictures. ;)

Actually...I'll probably get pictures of you anyway, regardless.

I think I'm going to go ahead and buy some more pins as well... I originally had bought 50, and with the way that the button thread has exploded in membership, we're going to need more than that =)

If you do order another batch, you should add something along the lines of "Bioware's Minion" to it. Hell, it might make Bioware feel better too. XD

Also, LewieP, jonxp, from the terms it mentioned $500. That maybe could be used to bring another, but that's up to VT.

Aye, which turns out to be okay anyways... when I saw that in the terms, my first thought was that I'd maybe find some other way to get her there, or maybe we could both take the train instead of the plane (to save costs for BioWare) or something... but when I told her about the fact that the contest was initially for one person, she said that she wasn't really interested in going to it in the first place. She wanted to go and see Seattle, and she was apparently going to "bear through" PAX. (I kind of wish she'd mentioned that before! Ugh =) )

Anyways, apparently she's going to throw a going away party with some of her girlfriends that weekend instead. =) Her best friend just came up recently to visit for the month, and one of her other good friends is moving to Alaska sometime in September to be with a guy she met on World of Warcraft (which is another awesome side story of its own =) )... so it'll be their last big weekend together.

Her birthday's on the 19th so I should be good there... I'll be cutting it close with our anniversary (on September 2nd), but it sounds like I'll be back in time. =) So it seems all is good on that front. =)

EDIT: Oh, and with the 500 bucks, I have something special planned for that which'll hopefully help the PAX Community out a bit. I'm keeping the plan sealed on it at the moment though, as I'm not sure if it'll be needed, or if it's something to be discussed before the proper time. =)

Nah, it'll be good. I'm just glad to be able to go, that's all I need. If the plan I have falls through, I'll buy some loot... but I have to remember as well that any loot I buy I'm just going to have to truck back with me to New Hampshire in a couple of months anyways. =) I'm looking forward, if possible, to doing something productive with it... hopefully. =)

ok so a bit off topic, with what you said on the whole friend going to Alaska for somebody they met on WoW... yeah, my best friend met somebody on WoW from GA and is flying her in to go to PAX (they're in my group). That's cool and all, it just seems like WoW is becoming a new online dating service now. :P

And even though Bioware gave a camcorder with that, I still agree with LewieP.

    BIOWARE!

According to Sony that's a pretty decent consumer camcorder. Would it be in bad taste to take that awesome gift camcorder and post criticisms?
I'll be nice, but: no audio input! VT, I have a decent microphone and mini mic preamp (if required) I was going to let you borrow for the duration of PAX, but that camera has no way to capture external audio. You'll be stuck with on-camera microphones, which tend to be lousy.

The camera has zoom, but unless you're mounted on a tripod, DO NOT use the zoom. Zoom all the way out and enlarge images by moving physically closer to them. The camera also has digital zoom, which you should never EVER use and should go to great lengths to be sure it's disabled.

Incidentally I also have a pretty sweet Manfrotto fluid head tripod -- when new it cost about $20 less than your new camcorder costs now -- but it's too big and heavy to bring with me. If someone else (You? Bioware?) will pick up the shipping costs, I'll totally let you borrow it during PAX though.

Your camera has a 30 mm filter diameter, and my crappy camera is 37 mm. I think I have some step-up adapter rings between those sizes, and if I do, you can borrow my filter set during PAX. I highly recommend at least a wide angle adapter, which I'm pretty sure won't work with a step-up ring. You have to get even closer to your subject, but camera shake is much harder to see that way. If you're interested, check a local camera shop for a 30 mm wide angle adapter.

Even if you don't get a tripod, I'd highly recommend building one of those hardware store cheap do-it-yourself camera stabilizers. A small pocket-size camera is very easy to shake around. A small pocket-size camera bolted onto ten pounds of pipe and dumbbell weight is much more difficult to shake.

As soon as you have the camera, learn to disable autofocus! Essentially if your camera can't see anything with high contrast any more, it will start to autofocus-hunt, focusing in and out endlessly searching for something wtih some contrast. Remember this: no matter if you're zooming in or out, if the distance from you to the subject is not changing, your focus distance will not change either. If you're shooting something that doesn't move and you know you won't be getting closer or farther away anytime soon, disable autofocus. Sure, use autofocus to find the optimal focus distance before you hit record, but then disable it so autofocus doesn't try to fix something that's not broken.

Or maybe you should just meet up with me in person and I'll go over stuff with you. I'll be busy with con setup duties Thursday, but maybe Wednesday we can meet up somewhere. :-)

    OMG
    VT'S A TOASTER

You've found my secret! Nooooo! =)

I did send a message to Chris to see if it might be a feasible trade-off for them to book me on something cheaper (like the train) in exchange for arriving a day earlier (so I could go on the Magical Mystery Tour that we've been planning out for so long =) )

If it's not possible, that's totally understandable. I think these sorts of things have strict regulations, timetables, and budgets and stuff. But if it happens to be doable, that would be the awesome chocolate sprinkles on a gigantic hot fudge sundae of awesomeness =)

@mspencer: I'm not sure what the whole dealio is with the camera and all of that jazz as far as what they want me to do and if they want me to use it specifically an such... I'll try to find out that kind of info. =) I do know that after it's all over I'm going to gladly give it to the man for whom none of this would've happened without. Without Kropotkin's editing, the movie wouldn't have been nearly as funny, as professional looking, or as just plain awesome. There's no more deserving person for a big-time reward! =)

Oh this is indeed excellent news (he says in true a true British restrained manner). Well done Mr VT......

Sorry that's not good enough is it? As someone who helped a little to get the video made I am really overjoyed to hear this news. I was really worried that some of the video really wasn't edited well enough. The flow wasn't there for me and I wanted to spend more time on it. Thankfully none of that mattered.

Well done VT and Bioware for making this competition such a catalyst for the PAX community which I am a very young member of.
