...I parked the jeep and grabbed the sniper and just for shits I decided to look through the scope fully zoomed. At that point I'm looking over the battlefield and I see a dot running across the screen, a freaking dot! It didn't have a friendly indicator above it so I decided to take the shot, after which I was greeted with a trophy icon informing me that I'd just taken somebody out from over 2500 meters away! 8-)
That's pretty awesome! Great work man
Like the Grinch my manhood grew three sizes that day. :winky:
Jetpacks are sweet, and it's great tooling other people with rocket launchers (instagib to jetpackers!) but some jackass dodged something like 4 RPG rockets in a row on the jetpack. Anyone enlighten me on this process? He was in my LoS the whole time.
Since it's ridiculously easy to get killed by a rocket they made it ridiculously easy to dodge one. Just double tap R2 to boost and chaff comes out. The only way you can die is if you don't have anymore boost or you just don't react in time.
Chaff in jetpack mode is unlimited as long as you have boost left?
Aperantly, it would explain how easily I dodged those rockets.
On another subject, seems you can earn trophies on unranked servers at least I seem to remember getting the daredevil trophie while playing split screen with a buddie.
Thanks to aggrochan for deciphering the secret of infinate chaff.

Just had one of my best matches ever, sniped a bunch of people, sniped TWO warhawks out of mid air, did a bunch of jetpacking rocket kills from mid air, etc.
So I decided to jump into a collection game with nightslayer, come to find him on the red team they're working together, and as usual my team is populated by those who couldn't be bothered to actualy try and win. My love for the game mode is begining to be over riden by the blinding rage I have when I toss 3 cores at some one and they just score the one they have.
I may or may not have said anything about they're moms but seeing as how they ignored my pleas to try and not suck I don't think they heard me.
I've got me a ps3, warhawk, a bluetooth headset, and a burning desire to get missile raped. Could someone add me to the clan? Also, when's our next big game?

It's funny...not having a headset makes for interesting Warhawk matches. I basically have to hope and pray that my teammates aren't morons and understand that I'm there to help them, not steal their glory, or any other such bullshit when I swoop in to lend support. Most of the time, I'm left with the mouth breathers (like today, where I had a 1-13 KDR in CTF because the other team kept us pinned down in our own base for the entire thing).
Money's tight right now, but I'm hoping to get a headset by X-mas so I can actually talk with you people. I have the feeling that coordination will be glorious.
I was out of the Warhawk loop for a bit, mainly due to boredom. Most of the random people I've played with don't know how to use the dropship or APC correctly. 9 times out of 10, some jackass tries using them alone, getting themselves and the vehicle destroyed in short order. That, and I really hate the Omega Factory map (Vaporfield's much better, but I'm not entirely familiar with it yet). So, add that to the same old stuff, and it gets boring after a while.
But man, the new expansion is fucking awesome. Fits my play to a tee. Best match so far was Island Outpost CTF. Towards the end, I decided to help my team capture one of the bases that's near the end of a bridge (the one with the missile turret on the back hill). So, I jet pack over to a hill that's overlooking it with full sniper ammo and the binocs. It's a great position because I can see a lot of the map. I see some red-team guy on the other side of the map (diagonally to my right on one of the highest hills on the map) attempt to do the same, but he doesn't see me. I call in an airstrike to nail him, and he goes up in a blaze of glory. Then, I see some jackass try to capture the checkpoint on the bridge. He gets a headshot for his trouble. I spend the last 5 minutes of the match in the same spot, sniping random, unsuspecting people. It was great.
Has anyone tried landing on one of the branches in the new level? I read that you can actually stand on some of them. So far, I've used the central wreckage as my sniping spot, but I'd like a few more.

I've barely managed to get a go on a collection game, what's the actual aim?
Collection is just another form of CTF. There are 4 orbs on the map, represented by radiation symbols on the map screen. Your team's goal is to capture them, then bring them back to your home base. Individually, you can hold on to more than one orb at a time, so you can, for example, bring home 3 orbs to your base. First team to the point cutoff (50, I think) wins.

Alow me to enlighten you to the finner points of collection. Yes you can hold multiple cores, also you can hand off cores by hitting triangle. The scoring system breaks down as follows, 1 core 1 point, 2c3p, 3c6p, 4cores 10points. So in theory you can win the game by bringing back 4 cores to the base 5 times. Unfortunatly no one reads the tool tips when they play the game so they don't understand that they can work together. Add to that so many people don't even listen to other people trying to cordinate they're teams.

also, bringing 1 core gets you 1 point, 2 is 3, 3 is 7(i think) and 4 is ten.
So the best thing to do is to try and bring all four at once.
You can press triangle to drop your core(s) for someone on your team to pick up and turn in (you still get points for this)
I usually message uncooperative jerks through the "players met" section
i have "don't turn in only one core at once retard" saved in my predictive dictionary :P

Personally, I'd save for the official Playstation headset that will be bundled with Socom:Confrontation, looks hot and for 60 bux you get it with a game too!
Thanks to aggrochan for deciphering the secret of infinate chaff.
Yeah, i recently confirmed this by boosting into a low ceiling (the place in crater clash with the biofield and wrench). Confetti!
Also, the PA clan should try to get itself into gear. :<

You have to earn 25 combat points in one round then it should give it too you. Then again I only need 10 WHMG kills to get the aerial acheivment medal and I havn't gotten that one yet.
Do I have to advance through the ranks by each one, or can I skip one if I qualify for a later one? Say I have enough points for Rank X, but I don't have the requirement for it. I don't have enough points (yet) for Rank Y, but I have the requirement completed for it. Do I skip X? I mean I'll find out soon but...

So 25 combat points is 25 kills right?
No you can earn multiple combat points, for instance.
An 5 assists is one combat point. Killing a warhawk with a tank is 2 combat points. Killing a warhawk with a tow missle is 3 combat points. Killing a warhawk with a cluster bomb should be a whole lot of combat points but is only 3 combat points. Killing any vehicle with any infantry weapon other than the wrench is 2 points cept binoculars against warhawk is 3. And last but not least getting a kill with the 50 cal on a tank warhawk or APC is 2 points.
Edit: There are several penalties for suicides and teamkills but not sure if that takes from your combat points or team points. Worst of all -30 for TK'n the flag carrier.
Im with liquidlogan and eggplant on this one. Getting my ass handed to me. Just last week decided to download my first game off the psn and grab all the map packs while im at it. Very different game than what I was used to. Was expecting more of a battlefield approach. Way off, and I dont mind it at all.
The last shooter I played with any seriousness was Quake 2 back in the 90s, and those skills don't really translate. I pretty much suck at Warhawk so far, especially the piloting of the aircraft. I like to run around on the ground and man the tank/jeep turrets. And fart into the headset, but that goes without saying.
So whats the better option? downloading the game on the PSN or getting the disk at a store?
You can get it damn cheap used now, cheaper than getting it on PSN.
Also just reached Sargent, hurray! Got about 5 ribbons, a metal, and a promotion all in one round. Awesome game all around.
Congratulations. As for PSN vs disk realy unless your planning to take the game to some one else's ps3 or could find the disk at retail for less than 30 or 30 dollars with the headset then I'd say PSN versions just as good.
Ok so it looks like there are quite a few people looking for some good starting advice.
I'll give a run down of some of the basic tips for each vehicle, and a run down of the infantry weapons.
The Warhawk:
Oh the mighty warhawk. If you don't feel you are up to par in it don't worry, I play this game constantly and unless I decide to dogfight I almost never use a warhawk unless I need to get somewhere fast. You really need to practice flying them to even make an impact on the battlefield.
-Go into options and switch flight mode to Pro. If you don't like it leave it anyway, you need to like it. Any seasoned pilot knows the canned maneuvers that the right stick performs, and its a big flag for "hey I'm new guys how are you?".
-Go into the tutorial and go through the flight training. I didn't have this when I was a young warhawk lad, but I still mess around with the missile drones. It is excellent training for scrubbing missiles, and just about the only way to do it with out destroying your kill death ratio.
-Look at the OP there is some excellent advice there.
The Tank.
Oh the mighty tank. It may only have one weapon but it is by far one of the most powerful. One blast or any indirect blast will kill just about any infantry. It's also terribly effective against other vehicles. Only problem really is that it screams "I'm really dangerous" and everyone rushes to kill you.
-If you can get a gunner in your second seat you will become almost invincible. They can equip rocket launchers to take out warhawks, and they can use the wrench (from the gunner seat no less!) to keep you in top shape. About the only thing that is a threat at that point are cruise missiles...and those damn mines.
-Aim for the ground when shooting ground vehicles and infantry, the splash damage from the shots is considerable. Also the bastards who use cowardly mines have some usual places they put them, preemptively shoot these locations. Steve Brule for your health!
-In a tank stand off if you don't get the first shot off you should probably get out of the tank.
-Pro Tip: Hop into the gunner seat and use either the binoculars or the sniper rifle to locate a hive of enemies at a great distance, line your shot up from the driver seat (there is some drop). Great Success!
The Jeep:
This is the middle child of warhawk vehicles. It has little destructive power, and it can't fly. So what is it good for? It's fast as hell, and it can run dudes over. Oh and the machine gun apparently got an upgrade in a recent patch, and it really does a nice job of mowing people down. This is my favorite vehicle. Why? I like to provide an affordable taxi service for flag/collection runners.
-You can't be locked on by missiles. This is great news!
-Run people over, then switch to the gunner seat and mow their stunned friends down. Laugh with your parents as they take pride in your cunning!
-Pro tip: Remember how you used to ride your little sisters bike really fast then jump off really quick and let it riderlessly plummet into old lady Jensen's car? It's called Ghostying and you can do it with the Jeep. Stick mines to your own Jeep before your Ghosty mission for added effect. (Please note I have not tried it yet but I assume that since the addition of the jetpack this may work with a warhawk as well)
The Jetpack:
If anything has changed the way I play the game its the Jetpack. Having one equipped significantly increases your chances of survival, and your versatility as a soldier. One of the best uses of the jetpack is as an ejection seat. If you are about to get blasted out of a vehicle, just pull a goose and launch out. Watch out for the windshield!
-Try holding forward while on the ground and double tap R2 to "skate" forward. I'm told this is kinda like tribes. Isn't that wonderful?
-Double tapping R2 launches you in the direction your moving, yes, put it also throws celebratory confetti in the air. It's a party! Strangely this confetti confounds missiles. Which is nice since you have unlimited celebratory confetti as long as you have boost charged.
Dropship/APC:
So if you play with these you don't get the jetpack...so why are you playing with these? I kid, I kid. They are fun, but they just aren't all that newbie friendly. So really why are you playing with these? Jetpacks4life!
Infantry:
So this is how you start. All alone in the world, with only a pistol and some grenades. It's a big scary world so your first order of business should be to practice your 2nd amendment rights and acquire your hunting assault rifle and grenades. Depending on what you plan on doing I would also recommend the home-defense missile launcher, as well as the "in case Russians parachute in my back yard" flame thrower. Don't forget your "leave the wife and kids behind and save yourself" jetpack!
-The Assault rifle should be your first pickup. Although it isn't great for much, it should be your last resort. There is always one near where you spawn so there is no reason not to get it. Great for infantry, and ok for jeeps and even warhawks. Useless on tanks. Crouch to get the edge on other infantry. Also it locks on.
-Grenades. Either I suck with them or they suck. It never hurts to throw them into a sticky situation, just make sure not to hit yourself. Well placed grenades will work on jeeps and tanks. The animation is the goofiest thing in the game, the damn things remain vertical the whole time.
-The rocket launcher. Great for medium range. Takes a little while to get to your target, but its blast is terribly powerful. Great for Warhawks, Tanks, Jeeps, Infantry everything! I always pick one up. It also has lock on capabilities which is great for distracting warhawks that are harassing you.
-The flamethrower. Great for close enemies. Also the best weapon for tanks because it A. kills them terribly fast B. lets you get incredibly close and thus makes it impossible to hit you. C. Will quickly kill anyone in the gunner hatch.
-Sniper Rifle. This has two levels of zoom with R3. If you are feeling lucky you can actually hit people at great distances by targeting below their name marker. Great for taking out cocky warhawks that are sitting still shooting infantry.
-The binoculars. These relatively rare items are rare for a reason. If you hold them still while firing it will lock a missile/artillery strike on the location. Great for clearing out the fortifications around a flag or a zone. Please note while firing there is a giant green line that points right to you. If you don't move quickly you are probably going to die. I find targeting slightly behind an enemy base (on the opposite side of where they are focused, is helpful as they won't likely see the green line.)
-The knife. It kills people!
-The cowardly Mine. There are all sorts of great uses for these. For example you could use them to great effect to be a pansy, or even better is using them for excellent yellow belly mode. Attach them to Jeeps near your own flag thus blowing up potential escaping noble courageous flag carriers. Attach them right near doorways, to zone flags, or just anywhere your pansy heart desires! The great thing about mines is they give you more time to touch yourself. Be warned they also give you more time to wonder why any girls/guys aren't touching you. I'll tell you why...it's because you are a coward.
I'll write up some more tips if ya'll found this at all useful.
Awesome write up, Troy!
I really wish they'd mix boosters though, I have all three and would love to have APCs in Omega Factory and a whole bunch of other wacky combinations.
I have too many fucking games I want to play and not enough time. Warhawk, Socom beta, Castle Crashers, Wizard 101 ... I have to say though this is a very good time to own a PS3. So much goodness on the way, particularly if you are into multiplayer.

I really wish they'd mix boosters though, I have all three and would love to have APCs in Omega Factory and a whole bunch of other wacky combinations.
Woah, I think you go to my school o_O
