Fucking casuals. I worked my ass off for that epic laser of +5 burn damage.
Lasers suck anyways, you need to come into the new century. Tasers, Toolboxes, Handcuffs, Stun rods, revolvers. Carbon Dioxide, if we had a Goon-like atmos system.

Huh, haven't played seriously since source code got leaked (except one or two times to check things out).
What's changed since then?
Damn near everything. Engineering has something to do (power the station), there's temperature involved, the old X>X-X-X access format has been dropped, screwdrivers can be used to stab eyes out...

That last part sounds fun.
Is there a guide out there that details the game? I think I could pick up enough stuff on my own, but I would like to have some idea of what I'm getting into going in (as opposed to the "oh god what do I do" period I had back when I started playing like forever ago back when how to make a bomb was a closely guarded secret by like six or so players).

There's some general gunk in the OP, plus I've made a few guides on stuff, which can found in the OP, and also my sig. Note that there are outdated aspects to the guides, as we've underwent a code shift since then, and I've been too lazy to go through and update for the differences.

I also have the mess hall done, and will be working on sick bay next. I have to make a few more textures. I'm having a heck of a time coming up with ceiling tiles. Turns out when I've played FPS games, I never looked up... I have no idea what one would look like.
If you are wondering where the wiring is going to go, it's going into the *ceiling*, along with the vents. I'm having a real dong of a time coming up with ceiling textures . if anyone know anyplace where I can get some free game textures for free, let me know. So far everything I've done is my own work, but I'm losing inspiration...
I still have to model all the stuff. (They will be in quake 3 format) and write actions for all of them, but the station is coming together.
The station is huge, so I'm color-coding everything so you don't get lost. The colors match the ID cards. Blue doors are free access, and red doors require a key. I've also removed a lot of the "lockdown" doors as they were redundant.
I'm using eduke32, which is a very enhanced version of the build engine. It can use animated md3 models for sprites, opengl graphics, textures up to 1024x1024x32, custom scripting engine, and more
The idea is to experiment with the engine and see if a 3d version is doable. If it is, I want to look into a torque port. If that happens, I'm going to go with a darilect ship as opposed to a space station. You and 16 of your friends have to take over a ship that has no power, minimal life support, and no engines. You have to get the reactor up and running, life support up, electrical fixed, ship powered, engines powered and then jump back to earth.
I tell you what, I'm learning more about texturing that I ever wanted to learn about. I'm still a novice, but I can now see how others do it. Turns out the trick is to never merge layers. Some of my textures are 20-30 levels deep.
They are time-consuming as all hell though.
I'm thinking of having games like traitor and also "stalker" where one player is a Predator like beast that's hunting the other players.

You'll need to work out a means to force players to be split up, otherwise it'll turn into something where everyone just huddles together.
Maybe it can sense life force through walls and space, and if people hang in groups, they show up like a christmas tree
If it can defeat all of the players massed together, then there's really no point for it to stalk. If it can't, then that doesn't solve the problem of people just clustering.
Would it be possible to alter textures of map tiles and other properties while the game is running? If players could change tile texture and hitbox, construction shouldn't be a problem, and bombs could even be included.

Hi guys, It's me again. I've gotten lots of interest about what I'm doing from this forum and else where. Unfortunately, I've has to suspend what I'm doing for a bit. So I apologize for the "false start". I didn't intend my experiment to be so popular.
The game is a prototype, meaning, it's not designed to be a real game, but more of an experiment in technologies. However, the project has mutated into something interesting and a bit bigger than what I can do.
I've invested about a month's worth of time into the game, but it's turning into something that is eating up my time. I don't own the engine and there is a strict "no commercial" clause in license. This means that I'm limited with what I can do with the code after investing my time into it (I'm unemployed. Time=Money). I was planning on just using the prototype as a feasibility test, and a way to grow as a programmer, and then move on to another engine that I could take ownership of. (Torque, which I already own).
The problem is my afore mentioned unemployment. I simply can't afford to play on the computer and not make any cash anymore.
There is a silver lining.
I've gotten a lot of positive feedback from lots of people. It looks like small, limited-group online scenario games are becoming bit popular. (Like left 4 dead). So the idea is not lost. When I have a "real job" I'll will be most likely picking it back up. However, I'll be transitioning to torque and making the game a lot less plagiarized. (Turning the space station into an abandoned ship in the middle of nowhere. Core mechanics will be staying the same). Also with my eDuke32 pototype, I can hammer out any questions of mechanics that are brought up. For example, how do you keep the players from huddling up, The answer is every player only has access to some of the ship, except for the captain. The engineer can't wander into security, security guards can't do into atmospherics (Unless there is reason, and then you have to get an amto tech or the captain to let you in. I like the idea of "crime scenes" and was experimenting with persistent decals like bloody footprints and fingerprints you could see on items with special goggles. Job enforcement is something I was experimenting with too to keep the griefing down.
It came to head when I was prototyping a ship interior using SketchUp for torque when I realized I had not been looking for work in five days, and my rent is due. After that I pulled my hard drive from my windows machine, and moved to my linux laptop here so I can look for work and stop playing with games.
Thanks for the interest though. I'll let you guys know when I have something cool.

Did you never play Duke Nukem 3D?
It had a lot of cool stuff you could do. Level a building with a charge? check. Replace a vent with a hole? check. have an entire room rotating and moving about a larger room/outdoor area on a track? check

So, I've got a bit of a hankering for some ss13. Is it still too soon for the next revival?

If you want some sort of contact with me/rick get on irc.synirc.net #ss13
E: The byond devs are idiots, if you want to fix the issues with cache, revert to byond version 431 http://www.byond.com/download/build/431.1006_byond.exe
I'd help, but our server's down right now.
Unless you have a job, friends, better games...
Let's just play this sprite-based roleplaying game with the crappy interface, OK?

Where did you get the idea to redo SS13 in Build?
