Creative X-Fi soundcard not working

Dr SnofeldDr Snofeld Registered User regular
So I got a new PC pre-built with a Creative X-Fi soundcard that didn't work. Called tech support and they said the card was defective and I should return it. After months of trouble with couriers and the like I finally got my new one today, but that doesn't work either.

I've tried the card in all three ports. I know it's connected because the Line-In socket glows red, so it's getting power. But Vista's device manager only lists "Unsupported Game Port for Creative", and I can't install the provided drivers (which are on a disc labelled "Installation CD for Windows Vista"). Onboard sound is disabled.

I'm at my wit's end. The store I bought the PC from won't give me a refund for the card, only exchange, and I need the PC for work so I'm loathe to send it away to be fixed. Any ideas?

    Which X-Fi card is it?

Also, have you tried the latest drivers from the Creative site?

It's an X-Fi XtremeGamer. Downloading new drivers now, but I just reactivated onboard sound for now, will I need to turn it off to install the drivers?

    Disabled in the BIOS yeah?

I think (if memory serves) that windows doesn't like more than one sound card/chipset in a system.

This seems to be the latest driver for your card.

I've got an X-Fi Fatal1ty (I hate the name) here and I have the onboard audio chipset disabled in the bios and I also made sure to uninstall the realtek audio drivers for it too.

No dice. Can't install the drivers, the Setup doesn't recognise any devices. I don't know if the card's installed right or not, but it's receiving power so I assume I plugged it in correctly.

This is a PCI-Express card right? What speed is required and what speed are your PCI-E slots?

XtremeGamer is just a regular old PCI. The Fatal1ty edition of the XtremeGamer is the one that's PCI-E.

I know this because I just bought the regular one.

It seems quite bizarre an issue, in this situation i'd make sure that the machine had a fully updated bios, had the onboard sound disabled in the bios, checked to make sure the PCI card was being given an IRQ.

I have no idea what an IRQ is.

According to CPU-Z my motherboard is an Abit IP35, my BIOS is Phoenix Technologies version 6.00 PG, and my Graphic Interface is PCI-Express with a max. supported link width of x16. Whatever that means.

You may want to reboot and get a photo (or write down really fast) what bios version it displays.

Plus the exact model number may come in handy.

Looking on the Abit site there appear to be a few different versions of the IP35. (IP35 Pro, IP35 Pro XE, IP35-E, IP35P, IP35V)

If this is a PCI card then you needn't worry about PCI-E speeds unless you're trying to force a PCI card into a PCI-E slot.

Well the free slots are the same size as the connectors on the card. I dunno what PCI-E slots look like though, are they different physically? The three free slots are white and the two taken up by my 8800GTS are blue, or at least the top one is, if that helps.

At any rate, the side of my case is clear plastic so I can tell you that the motherboard has "abit IP35" on it in big white letters. And my invoice for the parts says "ABIT IP35 SKT 775". No suffixes.

Well, here's the latest BIOS for your motherboard. I'd personally make absolutely sure it is the correct motherboard and also check that the BIOS version is an older version anyway.

The boot sequence goes far too fast for me to read anything, let alone find a BIOS version. Isn't there a key to pause the boot sequence so I have a chance to look?

Come to think of it, somewhere round here I have a cheapo sound card I got in a PC store for a tenner. I'm a bit burned out on all this today, though, but tomorrow I'll try sticking that in, to see if it's an issue with the card or the motherboard.
