Threads have popped up in several class forums that seem to be converging on a few of the same issues. So rather than cross-posting a lot, I thought I would start a new thread.
Tanking design:
1) Our goal in Lich King is for all 4 tanking classes to be viable.
2) We would like for tanking to be a little more fun. I'm going to leave this vague on purpose, but it is definitely a concern.
3) In 5-player instances, most warriors, druids, paladins and death knights should be effective tanks. The healing specs may have a harder time than the dps specs. Arms wariors, Fury warriors, Ret paladins, Ferals and most DKs should do fine.
4) In 5-player heroics, the expectation is that the tank has a heavy investment in tanking talents and appropriate gear. Arms warriors might have trouble tanking a heroic unless they overgear the instance.
5) For raids, we want all 4 tank classes to be viable. If your group has e.g. a Prot paladin and Feral druid as main tanks with appropriate gear and reasonable skill, you should be good to go.
6) This is a shift in philosophy for us. Previously, we sometimes tried to steer Ferals as being better off tanks than main tanks. We also expected specific classes to appear in the raid. Our new assumption is that you might have any of the 4 tanking classes as a tank. We are trying to achieve as much parity as we can among the 4 tanks without making them too similar. If nearly all guilds want the same class as their MT, we've failed.
7) This is a big one: the game isn't finished. We aren't spending too much effort yet to make sure mitigation, threat and tools are similar across the 4 classes at level 80 in blue or purple gear. Likewise, your talent trees and core abilities aren't finished. Tanking (and PvP) need to have a lot of other pieces of the game in place before we can really get the numbers right. It's fine (useful even) to point out when you feel a particular ability, talent, class or build is too good or not good enough. But please don't infer the work in progress as a reflection of our intent. If we end up changing our minds or if things don't work out, it will be posted here.
8) There are a lot of changes in Lich King that change tanking and raiding in general. I won't list them all out here, but keep in mind things like itemization changes, widespread raid buffs, consumables, UI changes, etc. Just keep them in mind. We're not in Tempest Keep anymore.
Concerns or feedback? This is a great place for it.
I'm thinking on keeping my Pally as Prot and just do whatever with the DK, so the idea that I can tank normals alright as DK and switch to the pally for heroics if needed is good. Just as long as I'll can do Heroic DK DPS sometimes too.

I think they are also allowing hunters to remove enrage abilities on players. Besides, it's not like you're going to have to relearn terminology or whatever for old encounters.

Ok, so I might be trying to GM a 10man raid guild (with a friend as RL, the guild is entirely made of friends from previous guilds), what does a GM actually do?
It really depends on leadership style and size. For a ten man guild...not an insane amount. Generally things like selecting officers, setting loot policy, etc.
Well the officers have already been decided (most of us have been in guilds together before so it's pretty easy) and loot is just /roll with main specs getting priority, so that's sorted. Yay!
I'm thinking on keeping my Pally as Prot and just do whatever with the DK, so the idea that I can tank normals alright as DK and switch to the pally for heroics if needed is good. Just as long as I'll can do Heroic DK DPS sometimes too.

Seriously, all i want is for Warrior Prot to be useful outside of tanking bosses in raids. Most 70 5-mans are best suited to Paladin Prot, and i'm left out in the cold because i can't zerg a 5-man like them or a Druid. And have you tried doing anything else as prot? I have, and it's just an exercise in self-harm.
So Blizzard, stop fucking around and give us concrete plans. At the moment, anything could happen on release, or maybe nothing at all!
I tank most heroic 5 mans with little to no CC on my prot warrior. Heck, I find tanking them easier than with the feral druid I have. With shockwave on my bar, it's going to be a breeze.
Edit: Hell, just talking about it makes me want to go spec prot again and go shield slam some faces in. That is seriously one of the biggest "fuck you" tanking skills, especially when it crits.
edit: stupid scroll of resurrection - I haven't logged into my account in well over 90 days, but it's blocking me because my account was 'active' for almost a month after that

well, I was gonna use the 10 free days to ride the time out until I get paid next anyway. I guess I'll decide next week whether I want to wait another week on top of that of not.

can you trial account to lvl 60, then xfer to your main account?!?
I think the actual 'trial' accounts are limited to level 20, but yes, you could upgrade that account to allow you to progress to 60 and then transfer the character over.
Not to nitpick, it's just that we've already seen one person get kinda screwed on that because they hit 20 with their trial account and the blizzard site was down, so they couldn't upgrade to progress on. Especially since you can apparently now cough and hit level 10.

Stupid question regarding upgrading my trial account:
If I buy another copy of WoW via the Blizzard store, do they email me the key or do I have to wait for the physical package to be mailed to me? I can just stop at the store on my way home, but going into Wal-mart makes me feel dirty.
I dunno, but you can upgrade via website only, in account management (in your trial account), and it will automatically input the cd key for you (as well as email you the key for you to keep).
