Speaking of Freedom, when is Freedom Force considered old? Because hot damn was that every awesome. I'd sure like to play it again, but last time I reinstalled it the sound didn't work.

Freedom Force. Oh boy. I wanted to play it for a while. I didn’t get the first one, but I did pick up the sequel. I only got to the 2nd or 3rd mission. I think its pretty cool and funny, but something new or shiny came by and distracted me from it. I think I may have to become one of these ppl who have a spreadsheet for their backlog and start working through it.

This is a rather brilliant remake of the X-Com games, available for Windows, Linux and OSX.

Unlike other attempts to remake the classic games, this really manages to capture the atmosphere that made those games such an amazing experience.

    Seriously, check it out.

Might check it out. How close are they to completion?

No idea, but it's pretty playable as-is.

So I'm playing fallout 2 at the moment and knife thrust to the eye and watching them explode as I have the 'Bloody Mess' trait never gets old. Especially the children  MUAHAHAHAH

I have vampire: the masquerade on my computer to, and I found a two disk set of planescape torment at a flew market but apperently thats the shitty set and my computer has trouble reading the second disk 90% of the time which sucks as then I have to quit the game as it always has to load from it.

Vampire I'm going to really get into once I finish fallout out with my speechy/melee dude

I'm glad I could be of service, I think everyone needs to re-install this game if not only for the combat text for eye and groin attacks. I must be pretty evil for knocking orphans in the nuts with my crowbar eh?

    SIMGOLF!

I installed this yesterday and completely forgot how fun and addicting it was. Booted it up just to check the sound (last time I installed it, it didn't work) and ended up playing for an hour or two right off the bat. Such a damn excellent game.

My course design skills aren't what they used to be -- I had some kickass courses before -- but it's damned fun trying to top yourself with each new hole.

You can copy Torment off the CDs and modify the config to make the whole thing run off the HD. I have the 4 CD verstion (if memory serves), so that trick is invaluable. Can't remember if you need... "extras" for that to work though.

Yes! Yes! You know it was amazing. Go stuff it in DOSBOX or whatever and be amazed at the 16-color ASCII goodness.

C'mon. I was NOT the only one to play the crap out of it.

I still need to play Bloodlines, been meaning to for... some years I guess.
Also, about finding Darklands - it's (obviously) in the abandonware stage and can be found accordingly, manuals and all.

Apparently - "MicroProse has granted distribution license to UltimateDarklands.com, which was selling the latest version on CD-ROM... until the website went down in 2003."

To be honest, I find the original X-Com fairly unplayable nowadays. That enormous DOS-era interface with a bazillion giant buttons just drives me nuts (also why I can't stand the original System Shock). I just wish someone would come up with a good community-created X-Com remake/clone that doesn't try to use a goddamned free-moving 3D camera. Nobody has ever done it right, and people should just stop and use a fixed-angle camera and be done with it.

I know I'm going to be crucified for saying all this, though.

Man, the interface is actually readable, and all the buttons actually have a reason to be there. Mind you, the game runs at the ultra-high resolution of 320x200, so really, what exactly are you expecting other than giant buttons? Otherwise they'd be unclickable.

So quitcherbitchin and enjoy the user-friendly big buttoned interface like the rest of us.

EDIT: Wait, no, I take that back. On the tactical interface, the "RESERVE TU FOR AUTO SHOT" and the "RESERVE TU FOR AIMED SHOT" should go to hell.

    Seriously fuck them. They're useless.

When it comes to X-COM, playable is quite distinct from winnable. Or survivable.

UFO-AI is coming along fairly good last I checked, and seems to have a static camera.

Its not community-created, but UFO: Extraterrestrials is a good X-Com clone, and gets almost 100% with mods. Plus unlike AI you can blow the fuck out of terrain and the UFOs. (AI uses the Quake 2 engine, which apparently doesn't play nicely with destructible walls).

The X-Com games are about the only games from that era that I actually think still look reasonable. While other games went for (at the time) cutting edge graphics that have dated terribly, the X-Com games went for a very stylish and less technically demanding 'look' that holds up really well today.

In fact, if you could only increase the resolution on the original games I reckon they'd still look pretty good today.

I'm not sure how old it is but I just installed Boiling Point.
Whilst it has a lot of flaws, it plays out beautifully, almost like Morrowind in that you forgive its mistakes because in the grand scheme of things, it fucking rocks.

I always enjoyed some Star warsEpisode 1 PODRACER on my older PC. I was going through some rubbermaid containers a while back, and found my first run copy, mint in box. My current PC doesn't run it unfortunately, thinking I'll sell it. Tried everything...just doesn't seem to want to happen. :(

Say what you will of the film, that game was up there with Darth Maul as a good thing that came out of it. Lots of fond memories will stay with me at least.:^:

I would KILL for an Unreal 1 remake in the UE3 engine. Of course a proper Unreal 3 game would be great, something in the style 100% of Unreal 1 and not at all like Unreal 2. But I don't know if that'll happen. Unreal 2 had some really cool things about it but overall it was pretty dissapointing.
