Home.Net, LAN extension

I once read about an ethernet/internet extension system that lets you connect two ethernet devices to your 115 volt power line, and use that as a bridge to send data. It's called something like "home net," or "home.net." I have tried looking it up on Google and Amazon, but none of my results were relevant. Does anyone know any info about this product, like its precise name, manufacturer, etc?

I think you're referring to Ethernet over Powerline. That's a link to D-Link's implementation of it.

Here's a hierarchy, in terms of speed:

    Lowest: PowerLine
    Next: Wireless A
    Next: 10mbps hub
    Next: 10/100
    Next: Wireless G/N
    Best: 10/100/1000

Don't bother with that. It works, but the bandwidth is very poor.

Not to mention that putting high frequency signals on long runs of unshielded cable is a really stupid idea and the engineers that designed it should be ashamed of themselves.

Well, in their defense (this is a mistake) it's a feasible option for situations lacking the ability to run network cable drops, or don't have the ability to run wireless networks (thick, insulated walls, or too cheap/poor to buy a router + adapters for every PC).

It's a cheap band-aid fix, not even close to comparable to a proper ethernet router.

I don't think anybody, anywhere thought that this would be used in a real, permanently viable setting.
