Someone tell me bad things about Dominion so that I don't have to buy it.
It absolutely 100% requires a good quality set of card sleeves. The more expensive ones. So you are looking at another $15 on top of the price of the game.
Edit: And with the expansion alone it is pretty easy to pick a set of 10 that plays very odd. These odd sets can be fun for advanced players but very frustrating for new. EG: sets where you absolutely do not want to buy gold. Sets with nearly no extra buys. Sets that in general just play agonizingly slow.
Definitely this, granted the premium sleeves mayfair makes are actually quite nice (and 100x nicer then the non-premium sleeves). Unfortunately, for both dominion and the expansion, you're 20 packs of $2.50 sleeves, which is pretty unfortunate. I picked up one pack of each at the local game shop to try them out, and the premium are definitely nice, but I'm still not sure about $50
Excellent. A friend has confirmed that he is buying Space Hulk. I want to play it, but having bought Doom and the Expansion pretty recently, I've already spent a bit on big boxes full of marines vs. slimy aliens in corridors type goodness. This way I can just play his copy for free.
Now if my Dorf army and Call to Arms battlelore expansions would just arrive.
I feel the same way V_V
OS, if you don't end my Arabian Nights game having had your sex changed, having been turned into a beast, and married, I will consider my attempt at PBP to be a failure.
Asmodo had people demo'ing Formula D at GenCon. An americanized version of Formula De. The rules are pretty much the same, but they made a basic version which just uses wreckage points instead of clutch, brake, gas, engine, etc. It was a lot of fun and made me miss the Formula De league we used to have at the local game store.

Honestly the game is already a lot funner than I thought it would be by just reading the description of the game.
Well I'm one turn in and already have a bad status so yay me!
It's okay though, I figure having to steal everything in sight is not a bad thing for a pirate :P
Heh. The game sprinkles both good and bad statuses and new skills on you pretty liberally as you go along.
I do like how the best cure for Envy is becoming wealthy. Protip: ain't no shame in marrying into money.
I was uncertain how this would play out, since my in-person plays mostly revolved around banter and mockery of the misfortunes of others, and we weren't really trying to think of a logical reason why someone would go to a city and find an "ape island" on a city space.
There are some very strange and funny encounters people can have in the book, just from the few plays I've had so far.
edit: Yessssss Call to Arms and Scottish Wars boxes just arrived.
Are any of you guys going to PAX in a couple weeks? I was planning on it for awhile, but now I'm not sure

My friend bought a copy of Starcraft: The board Game this weekend, and I played my first 3/4 of a game (we had to finish before completion, but another player would have won on victory points the next turn anyways).
I really enjoyed it, although it obviously needs to be learned really well before one jumps in, including learning a lot of the abilities and play styles.
So any advice on that front? I got stomped for making the stupid mistake of going for a carrier. I was never good at multiplayer Starcraft, so I figure that any advice would be helpful.

I'm heading off to PAX. Totally bringing along BSG if the expansion comes out prior to the event. Definitely gonna try to carry along Race For the Galaxy at least.

Blarney, are you taking the train again this year?

Unfortunately, I didn't have the time to spare, so I'm flying. Otherwise that would've been a great time to get some game time in with both games! Hmm, I wish I had thought of that earlier...

Starcraft is excellent! (It's a shame I never really have the time or opponents to play it )
My #1 tip: splash damage is amazing - use it as much as possible. You have to wipe out every unit on the attack to take an area, and splash makes that much, much easier.
#2 tip: attack attack attack! Combat tends to favour the attacker in this game: they get to arrange skirmishes. (This combines with tip #1 above - it's possible to arrange skirmishes so splash damage will kill your opponent's best units without ever having to directly face them.) There are times for defence, but you have to know when they are: aggression should be the default, which is uncomfortable to a lot of people. This is also the way to stop other players winning by special victory, which will happen at the start of stage III if everyone is too passive. They're something you have to work to stop, not something you work to achieve.
As regards the protoss, carriers are a good defensive unit. You only need one unit to survive for a successful defence, so the fact that they fly and have high health makes them good for area holding. But, as mentioned earlier, defence is not generally a great overall strategy. Protoss air in general is very defensive, and something you use for hanging onto good positions a turn or two longer rather than killing dudes. (Having completed your Special Victory as Tassadar is a very good place for it, for example).
On offence, nothing beats archons. They have great attack and defence values, and splash damage against ground and air. (In fact, they're so powerful they got balanced to be a touch more expensive in the expansion). Psionic Storm is also great for high templars, who you'll have anyway if you're using archons. Reavers can do the same job earlier in the game, but are completely helpless against air, so end up a bit weak once people start teching up to beat them. You have to be able to switch to another main unit later.
I'm not so great on the other races: I tend to play protoss more. Hope that's helpful!
I've been told that Brood War completely balances the game out.
My only experience was with both, and I really enjoyed it. I'm sure I would've enjoyed it without, but the differences (which I can't explain cause I don't know how) really seemed to make the game smoother.

That's a shame. I was looking forward to getting some BSG games in with you.
Just went and found that, it's pretty well done... a little fuzzy, but ok if you've played. The main issue is that it seems to be somewhat underpopulated - at the moment at least. Maybe we could get a pile of folks from PA over there sometime.
Anyone play the World of Warcraft board game (not the adventure game)? If so, how is it? Just read a brief description and it kinda sounded like Arkham with teams. Each side works together to beat the "Overlord" etc
I'm in the bay area for a couple weeks and I am going to board games night in berkeley tomorrow for the first time... if I don't come back by midnight tell my parents I am probably dead in a ditch somewhere clutching a copy of Ticket to Ride

How long are you in the Bay? There's a full day thing on the 29th in Redwood City. I usually go, but may/may not be there, might be doing a pre-PAX meetup instead.
Played a giant game of munchkin tonight and picked up two more munchkin games to add to my giant mess I already have. Was tons of fun with a new set and I think almost everyone enjoyed it.
We were gonna play arkham, but the munchkin game wasted too much time, so we split off.
One group played Lost Cities (which I am loving more and more due to how good of a game it is to have with you). You need 2-4 people to play a different game because you want to play Doom? -> throw them Lost Cities and have someone who has played explain it to them. It is easy, fun, and a great game if you need a game to play and don';t know what you want to play.
Then I played Doom with a pretty solid group and 2 new people I hadn't played with (but were pretty good at it) and we were doing quite well. We ran out of time before the store closed, so we took pictures of the board and wrote down inventories and are planning on continuing it next week. I feel like we may win one for once?!?!?!?!

I'll be around at least until then, but redwood city is a bridge away and I am lazy. pm me the info anyway though?
Two creature packs coming, apparently. A reprint-earth elemental/reprint-giant/hydra and then a pack with three dragons. Interesting.
I'm more interested in the heroes expansion and hoping they start doing an army-in-a-box kind of thing (just throw enough undead/elves/whatever in a box with deployment cards and a few flavor specialist cards and you have my money, FFG).
Speaking of, had a chance to try the Call to Arms card-deployment system. I was a little uncertain going in, but I think I liked it for a sort of random-yet-balanced fast army generation system.
So I just got smoked in a Carcassonne Dragon/Princess game. Everyone else got in on a 46 point megalopolis, the bastards. AND the frakkin' dragon ate my farmers and monks.

A couple of friends and I have been playing Catan about once a week and tonight we're going to head to the local game store (Guardian) to buy something new and branch out. I'm thinking either...
Game Of Thrones
Arkham Horror
Carcassonne
What's the learning curve on these? I'd rather not spend the entire night fumbling with the rules. Also, if Carcassonne is bought, what might be some good expansions to grab with it?

Also Tales of the Arabian Nights, how long does a game of that last ?
The box says 120+ minutes, and it's correct. I've played it twice, with three and two players, and the two player game just went over 120 minutes.

Would it be overly ambitious to try to get it running on the board similar to the BSG games?
Really ? Where ?

Not really, I mean, I've been playing it for years. Space Munchkin is awesome.
