Okay, horrible pun up there.

I'm going to be bringing my Canon 30D dSLR, a small handful of lenses and a tripod while I'm wandering around PAX. I did something very similar last year (If any of you remember the guy with the tripod and the grey wool fedora, that was me - the JoCo concert especially) and had a blast, getting great pictures. This year I'll know how to use my camera more and have an ultrawide zoom, so I'm expecting even better results.

All that aside, who else is going to be doing PAXtography, and where are you going?

I'm planning on being at the Pre-PAX Pike's Place Breakfast, the Triwizard Drinking Tournament and any other events I can sneak or bribe my way into as well, of course, as PAX itself. Woohoo!

I was thinking about it, but I dont really feel like trotting my tripod around all day, and without that, alot of the places are dim enough to make taking non-flash pictures annoying (I don't like firing off the big flash at event type things).

I have a working Mark II robot that will follow me around during all of PAX. It records video and still images for
me while staying invisible to the naked eye. If I get attacked the Mark II will defend me by shocking the crap out
    of my attacker.

I actually didn't have a problem without a flash - my lens maxed out at f/3.5 last year, but with ISO 1000-1600 I got more than a few perfectly usable photos. I'll be going around with f/2.8 gear this year, so hopefully the ISOs won't have to be so high - but if they do, Noise Ninja ahoy!

I only really used my tripod at talks and concerts, when I had to get the camera way above my head AND keep it steady to get good pictures. I have some great ones from just doing that.

    Also, joined the PAX group!

Somebody already posted an "official" PAX08 flickr group for all of us to use, but it doesn't hurt to have another I guess. :P

I'll also be bringing my camera (nothing special, it's not an SLR) and be taking pictures of just about everything, recording videos as well. I'll also try to record Chris Taylor's mini-keynote at the Pre-PAX Dinner, as well as moar pics! xD

Yeah, it's worth it. '06 was my first year but I only went for 1 day because I had only heard of it a week prior to the event lol. I grabbed a friend and went down for a day, and at least I was able to see it while it was still in Bellevue, however all I had was a camera phone, so I got about 7 pictures. That turned into 400 for last year, plus enough videos to add up to 10 gigs of epic win when it was all said and done. This year I'm hoping to smash that, going from a 1gb SD card last year to two 4gb cards this year to store a bunch more at a time.

I do kinda wish I had a tripod though. But oh well

I have an f/2 50mm but still my camera isn't much of a low light performer. I'm still on the fence. Maybe I'll just bring it one day.

I joined yours pretty much for that reason, it was a question I came up with when the other was posted lol. Now if there's a section on there for '07 I'll go ahead and add my 400 pictures. (even though a good chunk of them are already on my Photobucket album) XD

I don't know if I'm going to bring my camera or not. I have a Nikon D50, and if I do bring it, I'll only bring one lens...so, do I bring my 50mm f/1.8, or my 28-200 f/3.5-5.6? I guess I could bring both, but I don't really want to be fiddling around with two lenses...

I'd prolly opt for the f/1.8. You can typically foot zoom but you can't magically make more light. Plus primes tend to be better quality (no clue on your two though, just in general).

If you really don't want to swap lenses, I'd also vote for the nifty fifty. You'll get great interior shots and the exhibitor room will be plenty easy to take with that kind of wide lens. If you're not in the neckbreakers for panels or concerts, however, you're going to be very disappointed - 50mm really won't reach far. The 28-200 will give you enough reach to hit presenters from a mild distance (I did the JoCo concert with a 28-135 and got some good shots) but the 3.5-5.6 will sting in the exhibitor's hall especially. I don't think the D50 can crank up to insaneo ISOs, which is why you'll be wanting a wide lens in the dark.

That's exactly what I was thinking...that I'd need the speedy lens, but at the same time, I'm going to need something long for the concerts. Unfortunately, I don't think any lens at f/5.6 is going to be any good in the concerts, so I'll probably stick with the 50mm lens and use my cell phone (blegh) for concerts/video.

I promise you a 5.6 wont fly for the concerts. :) I'm tempted to bring my 50-200 2.8-3.5, but thats a large lens to be trucking around all day. Maybe I'll just stash it in the room and whip it out for the concerts. :)

Pax plus my trip to Canada in Nov is making me want to buy more camera gear. :(

Of course if I had this, I wouldn't have to worry about anything (except perhaps my back breaking)

Yeah, you've got about 30% more pixels than he does, makes a decent difference in how much PP you can use to kill noise. Anyway, it doesn't really matter, I'm willing to be wrong. I'm used to my shitty low light performing Olympus. :P

That picture was actually completely uncropped, only slightly sharpened, then colour saturation and contrast boosted by about 10%. It has not been put through Noise Ninja, so no PP denoising on that.

The tripod really did make all the difference in the world - I could NOT have gotten that shot handheld. Also, the tripod let me get above the crowd, since I'm kind of short.

I think I was maybe...50ish feet from the stage? I could stand where I was if I was in the room, but it's been a year since I took the shot...

yep, man, that's the reason right there I'd never buy a D40. I bought Nikon specifically because of compatibility with older lenses, and the D40 completely screwed that up.

That's my only problem with the D40, I mean it could use a few other things like more focus points, but if it had the auto focus motor built in I'd be completely happy! At least I'm used to manually focusing on the fly!
