Wheel Of Time movies. This should end well...

i can only imagine this being absolutely terrible and nonsensical
unless they use it as only the vaguest of inspiration and absolutely dismember the story to make it coherent in shorter film (s), in which case it could quite possibly be an improvement

So what? 1 1/2 hours of braid pulling, and another 1 1/2 of creepy gender politics? And a threesome?
Ugh, the books went from good->mediocre->wtf is going on->no seriously, wtf is going on -> who the fuck is the main character anymore -> fuck it, just fuck it.....
I can't imagine the movies being any better. Maybe they'll get Uwe Boll to direct....

It's an interesting world that could be the base for an interesting movie.
They could do one of the stories from the History of the world, too. Like the battle on Dragonmount, or the uprising of Logain or one of the other False Dragons. A shorter story from the history of the world would probably be better suited for a movie and allow more room for studio preferences and junk like that without pissing off too much of the fanbase.

I mean really, when the author has to include a glossary so you can keep track of all his made up words, half of which sound exactly the same, it's time to dial it back.
My friend used to get me to read the first book all the time. Then when he made it to the 3rd one he kept trying to get me to NOT read it.

Wasn't it like the 9th or 10th which was literally just the female characters bitching about how the male characters fucked everything up, while fucking up themselves?
Eh, could be good, but then again it's essentially just a studio calling dibs. A lot of properties have had this done. Hell, HBO's still got dibs on ASoIaF, and raise your hand if you think we'll be seeing that soon.
I'll definitely read the last book, I've been reading the series for about 15 years anyways and I want an ending. And Brandon Sanderson's not that bad a writer, his Mistborn stuff is pretty damn decently plotted and well-written.

I fixed that up for you.

Eh, the movie rights have been passed around a few dozen times already. Wait, I think it was NBC that originally had them for a tv miniseries. So I guess they've come full circle.
Eye of the World would probably make a decent movie, and I may go see it. I'll avoid anything afterwards.

The sub/dom relationship... Okay, I think I see the attraction for some people now.
Which book was it that had the whole island full of D/S women that somehow wasn't all about lesbians? I think that was the last book I read, got to the end enraged at being cockteased for like 500 pages.
All the ones that came before that one were full of stoic dudes and self-righteous cunts, IIRC.

Every book since the 4th or so, when the Seanchan showed up.
Its not that I hate the series. I've read them all and there's some good stuff in it, there's just so much filler in some of the books. I think it was about Lord of Chaos where I really started getting upset with it.

Ice And Fire is getting there!

"The latest news on HBO front is that David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have turned in the second draft of the pilot script for A GAME OF THRONES, and their rewrite is presently being read and evaluated by the powers-that-be at HBO. In other words, it's the normal process, which is long and often slow. So far, the reports are good, and HBO seems to like what they're seeing... but no, there's no greenlight yet, A GAME OF THRONES remains a script in development, not a series in production.
The one hard bit of news is that HBO has reached agreement with the BBC for them to come in as a partner on the series... IF it goes ahead. That's very cool news, and I'm excited and pleased to have the BBC involved... but even so, we're still in the crossed fingers stage here, not the shooting-off-fireworks stage.
I get emails about the HBO adaptation of A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE almost daily, by the way, so let me say a few words about that.
Look, guys and girls, I appreciate all the enthusiasm and interest, but please stop sending me your resumes, your head shots, your audition tapes. We're not hiring anyone as yet. We won't be hiring anyone for some time, most likely. And should that day arrive when the show gets the greenlight and we start looking for a cast and crew, it won't be me doing the hiring and casting. I'll visit the set from time to time, I'm sure (how often may depend on whether we're shooting in Ireland, the Czech Republic, New Zealand, Rumania, or wherever), but the final decisions on these matters will be made by HBO, the BBC, the showrunners, and the director. I can't help you. Especially if you're not actually professionally involved in film and television, but are still "desperate to be involved in the show in any capacity, even just standing around in the background." I get a lot of those emails too. Those people who stand around in the background are called "extras," for what it's worth, and I'm not in charge of hiring them either. Again, we thank you for the love, but that's not how television works.
I also get a constant stream of emails asking me for news about the HBO project. Guys, that's why I have a News page on my website, and that's why I post here. When there's some news to share, I share it. Honest. No news is no news. Sometimes long periods pass when nothing is happening, or things are happening behind the scenes that even I am not aware of. Whenever there is a significant development -- like the BBC coming aboard -- I will post it here. I'm not going to try to disseminate it in individual emails to whoever happens to write that day to ask what's new with HBO.
Thanks for your patience. Thanks for your understanding. Keep your fingers crossed."
So much hate in this thread. It's a cool world. The problem is that all of the characters are annoying as hell except for Thom, early Mat and early Min. Also, filler is indeed a problem.

Snip
Still in the lengthy approval process, a far ways off. It could be good, but I won't hold my breath.
Well then lets go with mid-story Mat. He's cool as a general but all his personal stuff in the later books is just as annoying as perpetual braid-pulling and skirt smoothing.

I stopped around book 5. Just couldn't do it.

They probably won't though.
You forgot an hour of skirt smoothing.
God those books are full of pointless crap.

The only good thing that can be said about the series is that it's better than Sword of Truth.
it's hard to decide. they're both so awful for different reasons.
Eye of the World would probably make a decent movie, and I may go see it. I'll avoid anything afterwards.

I mean, I'll admit the series had a number of serious flaws as much as the next guy but...jesus dudes. :P
As for any potential movie, I have considerable doubts. It's just too damn big. Maybe a smaller story set in the same world.
Warrior | Mage
To be fair, the first couple of books are okay. It just all goes to hell after that.

Edit: Also, while not as creepy as Sword of Truth (now that is a high bar) the gender politics are a bit... weird.
I remember much sniffing

Poor taste on their part I assume?
Let's put it this way: After 200 pages of Book 1, I accidentally left it on the Staten Island Ferry.
I'm not big on Freudian psychology but in this case, I'm going to have to reiterate his "there are no accidents" hypothesis.
What do you know, you're just a useless MAN!

My most serious answer is there's about 4 books worth of pretty damn fine material strung out to 12 books.

What.
Mat was obnoxious as hell until his luck.
I have read it all. I don't hate it, but he spent so long not getting to the point that I just can't read it any more.
