Goddamn. How do they go about designing such ridiculous note charts? "Hey let's just dump some notes everywhere and let the player handle it, job done". :x

Oh I have. Mei is one of my favourite IIDX note charts to watch others play, on YT. The question still stands. I am genuinely curious as to how the developers go about making the note charts. It can't be as bad as manual key input like Stepmania

That doesn't seem too impossible, aside from the two/one button combos. At least it's not 6B mode.
It is using Portable 2's interface. A letdown for me, but it won't matter to those who've never played the imports.
From that, I can gather that Outlaw, Syriana, Another Day, Brave It Out, Dream of You, and a few other Portable 2 vets carried over. No idea whether or not the Clazziquai or Black Square tracks will make it, but I hope so.
I recently picked up Clazziquai, and it has some great new tracks.
What's the MSRP on this bad boy? I'm debating whether I should get this (and endure the overlap with DJMP2, which I adore) or spring for a copy of DJMP1 and use the Link Disc function I've never used.

$39.99, I think. From what I've heard, DJMP1 is worth getting. It has some great exclusive tracks, like Oblivion (Rockin' Night Style), which is an amazing remix.
Shame it's still overpriced.
Clazziquai also has link disc with DJMP2. It unlocks Syriana.
DJ MAX Portable, Portable 2, Clazziquai, and Black Square.
1 & 2 are more full games. Clazziquai and Black Square are more like expansions, only 30 odd songs in each, but they have some good ones.
Fever is based on 2 more than anything, so I'd say go for either 1 or Clazziquai.
Black Square is tough as nails, and Clazziquai has a two button mode for pure beginners.
Alright, sounds good. If I end up absolutely loving this I'll probably get 'em all. Are there any special or limited editions I should keep an eye out for when ordering online? I'm a sucker for special editions.

I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

Our store finally got the copies in, picked it up as soon as I can. I absolutely love it and already want to import the others. One thing I'm curious about though is.. it doesn't seem like you have to hit a specific button for the notes? I can hit circle and it will work for any of them; I've tried easy, normal, hard, and the different button modes but it seems the same. Is that just how they made it for the American release to make it easier? Or am I missing something..?

My friend who also got the game said it's an "auto-correct" feature that was in DJ Max Black Square (I think) as well. Basically, you can hit any button for any note, BUT you'll only get a maximum of 80% accuracy on each note pressed this way. So if you're really struggling, you can hammer fewer buttons and hope to last through the song, but if you want to score well, you have to hit the actual buttons properly.
AFAIK, there's no way to disable it, but there might also be a few challenges that force you to use the actual buttons.

I see, so it penalizes you for hitting the wrong notes while allowing you to fully score if you can do it normally or pass it if it's too tough for you; I don't think I can really complain about it, because I still fail some of the songs with that feature.. haha.
Really digging this. Hope it does well so we can see more over in the states. Also, what exactly does leveling up do? Anything? And is there a list of how to unlock stuff for the shop?

I know some of the hardcore players are not fond of the auto-correct feature, but if it helps the series be more accessible to beginners, I don't see the problem with it.
As for leveling up, it gets you access to new unlockables. Skins, notes, character avatars, songs, missions, etc.
This is assuming it uses DJMP2's system, which it looks like a carbon copy of to me.
I hope Deadly Poison is in there, because the first track is Syriana. That version has one of the most epic 6b charts ever.
I got this yesterday, and I'm actually suprised that they kept it so true to the original games. It's actually fun and challenging on the higher difficulties. I really hope this gets a good response here, because it's a really well made music game.
Now Konami, THIS is how you localise a music game.

I read the posts about auto-correct. I haven't read my manual yet. Is there going to be something in there that lets me know what the correct notes to hit are? If I'm on 4 buttons the up and left and triangle and circle are the ones I can hit right? Do the left and second to left notes need to be hit by the left and up arrows respectively?

Yep, those are the 4-button controls. 5-button lets you use either right arrow or square for the center note, and for 6-button you use right arrow and square as the left and right centermost notes respectively. 8-button I believe adds L and R to the mix.
Funny thing, it never outright states these configurations in the manual...I guess they explain them in-game somewhere then.

I was going to do some trial and error after I read the auto-correct thing, but now I don't have to, thanks!

You know, I don't remember there being a tutorial in the game. There's an options menu where you can configure your keys though. I wish they had the tutorial from Clazz. Actually, generally, I liked how Clazz was set up since I'm just not very good at the game, and story mode was fun.

On most of the gears (in DJMP2, at least, the one I own), it has symbols right underneath where the note line sits that tell you what buttons to hit. (Look at the pic in the OP.) I think it might even have L and R etched onto the 8-button-specific notes ... at that point, though, you've got all of the controls etched into your brain.
I wonder what the chances are of seeing one of these games on PS3/360.
Playing this with the heinous 360 D-pad would be a crime against humanity. It might work on the PS3, I haven't tried that controller, but this kind of thing is so niche nowadays I'm amazed it got a Western release at all. I could see a PSN version somewhere down the line, but then how would Pentavision sell an ultra-luxe LE version for $300?

Clazziquai doesn't have as many songs as DJMP2, but it's a lot more fun to play, and the good songs are excellent.
I still haven't unlocked everything. I think I spend more time watching the video for Robotica than playing the actual game.
This game is Nucking Futs. I love it. I set it to hard and 8 buttons and just failed over and over for an hour. It got me to being halfway decent at 4 button.
It has so many difficulty variations. 4, 5, 6, or 8 buttons, easy, normal or hard in the options, then at the song select each song has diffrent difficulties you can select. (some songs don't have them). I don't know what those things you select at the song are, it seems like if it was the same kind of difficulty switch that's in the options it would be reduntant. You can also make the scroll speed faster. And the auto-correct thing.

The song difficulties ranges from Normal to Hard to MX(insane). A few have hard, very few have MX.
Same song, just more notes. You're playing more of it, but it's a lot tougher.
It's good if you want a better experience of the track in general. Midnight Blood's Hard chart is awesome, and so is Syriana(wicked guitar solo = win).
