The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
there was a thread about pc gamers running games on 2 yr old rigs in what some people on the site refer to as "magic pc's" . i've never heard magic pc's until i read the forums at evilavatar.com and lately it seem to have let the site owner wage war and basically drive away all traffic on his site...
from what i gather, you can not go to Evil Avatar and speak freely on subjects that the owner doesn't believe in.
sounds like the site is ruled with an iron keyboard if you ask me, i always wondered were fidel castro went after he gave up power down in cuba...ha ha ha
In a thread regarding the lower resolution textures of the 360 version of Rage, two problematic posters (along with a third, arguably innocent member) were banned during an altercation with Evil Avatar over the merits of PC gaming. After banning the two of them, Evil Avatar proclaims that only people with Magic PC's can continue PC gaming on two year old rigs.
The Magic PC comment became a community-wide meme, openly ridiculing Evil Avatar. Another problematic poster, J Arcane, is banned on a mostly unrelated matter, concerning PC gaming [I don't know the details on the banning of J Arcane]. A fifth poster, iHap, created a thread on the Magic PC meme, and was banned [details unclear; Evil Avatar says it was a joke gone awry]. The PC gaming community on the site begins to organize in the IRC channel, a response/internet mutiny begins to form.
Spam posts begin to flood the site, continuing the Magic PC meme. Threads are closed, no communication between the two sides. More threads appear, looking to settle the conflict; they are closed, and deleted from the database. One thread is cached and uploaded elsewhere. Highlights of the thread are as follows:

My take on the issue is that this issue is very real and is upsetting quite a few of you. The recent string of bannings hits very close to home, as it's a certain subfaction of users that have been banned. I get why you're all upset: you feel your love of PC gaming isn't something that is respected around here. That makes sense.
I do understand why you're up in arms about this. One of the reasons I came to this community was because bannings only happened to jackasses and shills. I've been to so many communist-style forums where a difference of opinion is all it takes to get your ass kicked out the door, so Evil Avatar was definitely a breath of fresh air in that respect.
Now, however, you feel that even stating your opinion or arguing your position is going to get you banned. I feel that this is wrong, and that there needs to be a compromise made to ensure that this isn't a big issue in the future.
I hope we can all come to an agreement and meet halfway in this Serious Business issue.

Now I personally believed that was a large part of why he was banned, but I think using that thread as "the last straw" antagonized the community and sent the wrong message. In regards to Random, well...I like Random, but he pushed things as far as he could sometimes. This is probably because Evil isn't exactly accepting of PC gaming.
But the real problem is that Evil has a tendency to get fired up when talking about PC gaming. This leads to reactions that are out of proportion in my eyes. I'm one of the ones who have been banned from this same type of reaction, although I have to give him a TON of credit and respect for the immediate reversal and apology. But still, I have been on the other side of the fence from this...so I can strongly sympathize with the people who feel they got the short end of the stick here.

We have 9,000+ registered users, I have no problems cutting out a few troublemaking jackasses now and then.

This is because our community is formed around the core group. Many have moved up to being a red, such as Dis here.
I don't necessarily like everyone in the core group, but I don't think they should be kicked out for no good reason. It has a ripple effect through-out the community that creates what I would describe as negative vibes, eventually leading to further potential bannings. This is how internet communities implode. Evil may be the one in charge, at the end of the day, but the pillars that hold up this site are it's most prolific users. Removing one has a serious effect on the whole.
Furthermore, the issue of the general disrespect for PC gaming on this site (among other things) is turning the site into a center for lame platform debates, which really aren't doing anyone any good. I'm doing my best not to say anything overtly biased against a platform I don't like, because there is no reason to do so, and it has nothing but a negative effect on the community. I think this whole site needs to move away from the debate over platforms; this includes "what has the best games," or "what version of X game is better" when used as arguments to prop up or bring down the fans of other platforms.
This site, what I would call our site, is a cosmopolitan community of gamers, with many different tastes, preferences and backgrounds. If we are to turn against each other over these differences, what point is there in being on this site at all? There are sites dedicated to every platform, from the 360 to PC gaming. We chose to come here instead of going to those sites because, at least at one time, we appreciated gamers as a whole. The fact that platform division has reached even the founder of the site is disconcerting, and it will eventually tear the community apart.

Just because we don't moderate these forums with a heavy hand like other sites doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Most of our problem people wouldn't have lasted a full day on any other website.
Thread is locked, and deleted from the database. Most involved on the issue no longer feel that an amicable solution can be achieved. Further threads are made, and deleted; two site staff members abandon Evil Avatar, a third is removed without notice. Attempts at communication are unsuccessful.
Members feeling that the community was no longer the place that it once was leave, hiving into one of the site's off-shoots. Problems with the site owner range from a perceived tendency to troll certain platforms, an unfair view of technology, an inability to communicate with the community, a lack of care for individual members of the community, and a tendency towards "cowboy-modding" which is otherwise unheard of on the site.
With most of the 'dissidents' either gone entirely, or mostly inactive, a final thread on the topic is made, populated primarily by members who weren't involved in the conflict and have a lack of knowledge over it's specifics.
