I just ordered a Macbook and one of the things I want to do is record guitar and vocals. What is everything I need to accomplish this? I realize the built in mic would kinda work but I may need something a lil better. Also I'm not looking to spend an arm and a leg. Thanks in advance!
Yep, that thread has some good info. Personally, for the time being, I am using my mic from Rock Band. If you've already got Rock Band around, that's a free and usable way to go until you feel like spending some money.

WOW I would've never thought that as a possible alternative. I'm sure its not the best quality out there but hey just to mess around in garage band its fine right? Perfect because I have all the RB equipment just lying there not being used.

Yep, works just fine for some hobbyist screwing around. You may want to invest in a small mic stand. I've got a few recordings I posted in that other thread - 2nd or 3rd page, I think, if you want to hear how it sounds. They are a bit muddy, but much of that is because I just set the mic on the floor in front of my amp. Getting it up off the floor clears up some of that.
Well first of all, you should be using that Rock Band equipment.
second of all, the problem you may encounter, like I did, is that the rock band mic produces a lot of background white noise, so you'll have to use a program that can cancel that shit out

Trust me I'd love to use it but my 360 got the rings of death and microsoft wont replace or fix it because I bought it refurbished. I'm pretty much retarded huh.

I just checkout your recordings and its not half bad soundwise! I think that'll do just fine for me just wanting to record and share my stuff with friends for shits and giggles.
You can certainly record and track stuff in Garage Band using very basic stuff. Arguably, the hardest part to creating music is the act of creation itself -- not the recording. A lo-fi recording of a good song will still be good. A polished turd is still shit.
