Omitting the fact that they're just releasing 1:1 motion detection now (what is up with that?)
Ah, now THIS is something I have to bitch at Nintendo for. Only now, as an add-on, are we getting what we were promised in 2006.
They promised 1:1 motion detection? It is shitty that they waited until now to add an improvement to the wiimote when the improvement is supposed to be cheap.
People have bitched about every console in the history of mankind "not having good games" (in other words, games they like). I really don't see what the amount of crap on a system has to do with anything. A game having shovelware doesn't mean the good games don't exist.
Omitting the fact that they're just releasing 1:1 motion detection now (what is up with that?)
Ah, now THIS is something I have to bitch at Nintendo for. Only now, as an add-on, are we getting what we were promised in 2006.
Except of course that it's only be announced now, to us and third parties. So we are yonks away from it being used properly. A year before we start seeing third parties use it at least.
I think motion sensing this gen has been finding its feet, I think we'll have to wait for next gen for it to really come into it's own.
Like how we had to sit through a generation of fucking hideous 3D games to bridge the gap from beautiful 2D games to beautiful 3D ones.
Lave, you seem the extra defensive one, how about making a case?
The guy does bring up a valid point
I think it's the unnecessarily inflammatory thread title that does it, actually.
It's ridiculous to label all Nintendo consoles as filled with nothing but casual garbage, as the Wii (though casual-crap-heavy) still has plenty of awesome games, and the DS is possibly the best gaming device out there.
Does it need stronger third-party support? Absolutely, yes. Are there still plenty of good games out there? You bet, particularly with the quirkier developers.
Different strokes for different folks.
I think a lot of people are just frustrated at the wasted potential here. We got the first fully motion sensitive console out on the market, affordable, and in a wide range of homes right now. But nothing exciting is being done with. Omitting the fact that they're just releasing 1:1 motion detection now (what is up with that?), the Wii should be the playground for some of the great developers. But that interest or support simply isn't there. Why? Is it the devs or Nintendo? I know Nintendo is known to be insanely annal about their dev kits and stuff, so could that be it?
This is almost silly.
There are numerous reasons third parties haven't been developing AAA titles for Wii. Among them, the 360 + PS3 (and let's face it, most games will be both) userbase still outnumbers the Wii userbase. It's almost like having a two-console race this generation, really. Supplementary to that, most of these developers invested heavily in the HD technology like the PC, 360, and PS3. Next generation is going to build on this generation's tech and there will more than likely be an HD standard. Most third parties feel they can wait this generation out putting games on the "losing" systems until the next generation rolls around and ports are more easily done. There's also probably some third parties who plain and simple don't want a single manufacturer on top, be it Nintendo, Sony, or Microsoft. A three way tie is great for them, but not when one system is so different from the other two.
So, yeah. You're not going to see a lot of AAA titles from people who aren't Nintendo (who, in my opinion, already made the best game of this generation so I guess I give them more slack than others). It's probably Nintendo's fault in more ways than one. So it goes every generation, but this time for different reasons.
There are a number of small developers who really love the system, though. The HD generation left them behind and they're hitting the Wii full force. The publisher Marvelous, for example, bankrolled No More Heroes and a number of other niche but extremely interesting titles for the system. Marvelous would be buried on the 360 or PS3, but on the Wii they're emerging as one of the most promising publishers in the industry. Hell, some of the big boys rely on Nintendo, too. Square hasn't released a single HD game from their own studios so far (as far as I know, feel free to correct me). If not for the Wii and the handhelds, they'd be pretty damn screwed right now.
WiiWare can eat a dick though. We had good games coming out for a month tops.
The Dr.Mario remake is excellent, and SBCG4AP is also very good (though also available on PC), but honestly, I don't really trust WiiWare games that aren't made by big names like Nintendo or Hudson (can't wait for their Bomberman and Tetris games), because it seems Nintendo will accept any kind of shovelware bullshit on that store.
Ok, so there is shit on XBLA too, but seriously, WiiWare scares me.
If you don't like the Wii, don't play it. Don't buy one.
If you have one and you don't play it, sell it and use those monies to buy games you do like to play.
Both cases require no discussion because you've already made up your mind. What, do you want us to try to change your mind when it's obviously already made up?
Why is this so difficult?
Well maybe we like to discuss why there's seemingly to be more people lately that find the Wii not that compelling and really getting less and less of a reason to play one?
for myself I feel the same way, especially with the lineup of games coming out, I will not sell my Wii because I do enjoy it but I barely play it especially compared to the 360 and PS3. but you don't have to act like an ass towards him for just voice his opinion.
But there aren't more people lately. We've been having the same thread since November 2006. The "Wii X Months Later" thread became a meme for a while because of how frequently people decided to post these stupid threads.
It's not a new thing. It's not about the upcoming lineup. Some people just like bitching about Nintendo and the repetition gets tedious.
I own a Wii and love it. I own several games for it (some of which I haven't finished) and I'm looking forward to upcoming releases like The Conduit, Wario Land: Shake It, Madworld, and Fatal Frame IV (haven't played the other Fatal Frame games though). I also heard of about an RPG that's under development for the Wii called Fragile which may turn out to be a pretty cool game to get.
The reason the Wii hasn't gotten as much good games as, let's say, the Xbox 360 is because many 3rd party developers would rather make quick cash-ins (shovelware) instead of actually putting in real effort into their products. That being said, maybe some people should whine about the 3rd party developers rather than Nintendo which, by the way, put out some really good games this generation including Metroid Prime 3 which I enjoy playing.
Some devs have put in the effort, which is where you get titles like Boom Blox, THEWY, No More Heroes, Zack & Wiki, the second DBZ Tenkaichi game and Lost Winds. Now granted they may not be your thing, but that's not so much a case of the console having good titles, but it having titles/genres that you're into. This isn't Nintendo sitting back and being lazy, their titles comprise of a fairly large chunk of the best on the system because they're willing to put in the effort to get that extra layer of polish on top to make an good game great.
Because when I goto my local EB, I see the same old thing. Disney/kiddy throw away games covering the walls. Same goes for the DS Lite (which I own). There's an insane amount of potential here, but Nintendo is ok with just getting by on what it needs.
Shovelware appears on all consoles, but it is almost always most prominent on whatever the most successful console of the generation is because that is the one families are most likely to have and the vast majority of them are quick cash in attempts by companies to coincide with the movie release.
Its happened with just about every console there is (ET way back on the Atari?) and companies like Phoenix Games certainly aren't going to stop any time soon. Sure you get some good gems here and there, like Aladdin and the Lion King back on the SNES but the Barbie Horse Adventures, Kung Fu Pandas and Imagine Babies of this generation won't be disappearing anytime soon as long as those companies can make a quick buck.

Ok, so there is shit on XBLA too, but seriously, WiiWare scares me.
XBLA is the only thing keeping me on the 360 apart from occasionally picking up "AAA" titles now 12 months after release that are now a £10. Playing Gears or Halo 3 or GTA or whatever is good. But I wouldn't buy a console for them.
But Braid, Omega 5, Bionic Commando rearmed, GW2, N, Space Giraffe, Pac Man CE hold my attention completely.
I think Wii Ware has the oppurtuinty to use the remote far better than full title releases.
And Lost Winds is a spectacular example of what can be done. So I'm hopeful for WiiWare, but it's got a large hill to climb. Stuff like that 2D RTS, Space Invaders RTS, Lost Winds 2 and Strongbad are good looking titles on the horizon. But its hard to tell without demos.
I just beat RE4, and went and picked up Umbrella Chronicles yesterday. So far I really like it once i get used to how I like to hold the Wii Zapper.
That, and I've had a huge re-discovery of how much I love Endless Ocean. I've been swapping between Mario Kart/RE4/Umbrella Chronicles/Endless Ocean and Dr. Mario constantly lately, and actually got back into Wii Fit.
For some weird reason, I'm using the Wii more than I EVER have right now. And I still havent picked up Zack and Wiki or No More Heroes yet.

My wii is collecting dust. I remember the last time I turned it on was for the wiiware update. Since then it has been my humble opinion that they have been releasing the disgusting drivel I have ever seen. Remember when they wanted to lead the third person party charge with Red steel?
I don't either, because the gas that fueled that desire to make their console an acutal gaming machine died along with whatever that lousy game had to offer. Metroid prime was on its last legs, and only showed that first person controls would work on the console. But honestly, who played metroid prime 3?
Nintendo needed to change its image to get the third parties on board because the system wasn't marketed to gamers. Instead of changing its image, nintendo continued its casual family fun image marketing the system to casuals and leaving the rest of its customers in the dust. Don't like wii fit? Neither do I. Don't like minigames? Neither do I. Want to buy another Nintedo console? Neither do I.
Don't get me started with buying the old games you already played.
I don't play my Wii even 1/10th the amount I do my 360. I'll sometimes go five or six weeks without even turning it on. When it comes to a dollar/time value, every other console I own trumps the Wii, easily.
Yet I'm very happy with my purchase, because when I do turn it on I get a unique brand of fun I can't get anywhere else, and that's pretty awesome.
I don't play my Wii even 1/10th the amount I do my 360. I'll sometimes go five or six weeks without even turning it on.
Same here, but only because XBLA exists. Take it out, and my 360 is basically a Rock Band machine. Ok, so I played Mass Effect, Burnout Paradise, and Dead Rising, but honestly, a 360 is a hard drive on which you store a bunch of good and cheap arcade-like games.
Point is, OP's rant is applicable to any system, and not to start a flamewar, but I'd say PS3 owners are the ones who should be bitching right now. I'll get a PS3 for LBP soon, but right now I can't think of a single EXCLUSIVE game that makes me want a PS3. Like, at all. Not one.
Also, I didn't play my DS a lot when it was new. Just shovelware and very few good games. Now I own about 30 US games for it, 15 JPN ones, and I don't regret any of them. Without my DS and its awesome 1st and 3rd parties, I don't know how I would have endured all those hours (and days) I spent bedridden at the hospital. If you remove the nostalgia factor of the NES and SNES, the DS is by far the best videogaming system that has ever been made, ever, anywhere in the world, at any time.
I have about $200 in VC titles, which is the only reason I keep my Wii around, that and everyone else loves it so it's more become a gift to family and something I mess with on occasion.
The Wii is a gaming machine, in as far as a hunk of hardware can be. But if Ubisoft, for example, is bringing out Assassin's Creed for the 360 and PS3 and then turn around and make Petz Dogz and The Price is Right for the Wii and call it equal, then you've got to call out Ubisoft on their bullshit, not Nintendo.
i suppose it's not equal, but making a unique port to the wii takes a lot more effort than porting a 360 game to the ps3 or pc
can't blame ubi for not wanting to spend time on an inferior port to the wii which probably won't sell as much
I gave my Wii to my little brother and went out and bought myself a MGS4 bundle.
Oh gawd I didn't realize how much I've missed eye candy until playing through MGS4 on my HDTV.

Just sayin'.
Indeed I play my 360 probably 2 to 3 times more often than I do my Wii. But then I eat toast much more than I eat Eggs Benedict. And I know which one of those I prefer.
The time I play with my Wii is awesome. It's offering me something else. And I love it for that.
This idea that the Wii should present as big a time sink as the other consoles is a silly one.
Also, aside from "gimmick" or "novelty" games like Rock Band, Wii is truly the one console I can bust out at family parties or with non-gamers and have fun. I'm not sitting there and watching them have fun with my sucky games, I'm having fun WITH them with my awesome multiplayer-centric games.
I myself have about 20 Wii games, but I haven't played it too much the past few weeks. I don't see why you must play on your console constantly. The same things happened with all the consoles I owned, I would stop playing for a while and when a new game came along that was worth getting, I got it. I remember I didn't play my cube for quite a while, distracted by other stuff. When I first got the DS and destroyed Mario64 DS in like 4 days (so November 2004), the next time I played it after that was when Kirby and Meteos came out (so about June 2005). During that time I played stuff on my computer. PC games offer much more replay value imo then console games most of the time, so I can play a bunch of stuff, including older games.
What it boils down to in my opinion is, I don't see a problem with not playing X console/handheld for a while if you know that good games will eventually come, even if there is no immediate indication of that now. Surprises often happen. If you really feel X console will never get to that then might as well sell it and spend on other things.
Indeed I play my 360 probably 2 to 3 times more often than I do my Wii. But then I eat toast much more than I eat Eggs Benedict. And I know which one of those I prefer.
You know what I have a problem with? Opera. Like, that stuff is lame. People singing 'n shit. Where are the epic gun fights? Where are the alien invasions? Where are the JRPGs? Opera doesn't support Hardcore gamers! I bought 250$ in opera tickets, and they all suck! WTF is up with that? I think Opera should try harder to appeal to my ridiculous niche.

Can I just say that even though I don't play my Wii that often that I don't hold Nintendo to some kind of standard where they must cater to my needs?
I mean, they're making money hand over fist, so much money that it is hard to express in rational numbers. Nintendo's bank account is partially infused with infinity.
