Sorry, just want to gripe. As a Seattle native, I look forward to both PAX and Bumbershoot. So why schedule them on the same weekend?
I would think that Tycho, who seems to a pretty big music guy, would be sympathetic to this complaint. What, gaming geeks aren't into live music? Not this geek.
So as it is, I've got to sacrifice seeing Beck and Band of Horses so I can get my game-on. This is like Sophie's Choice -- I don't want to have to make this decision. Could you guys consider this for next year?

Luckily at the last minute, like "two weeks ago" kind of last minute, my sister is going to Bumbershoot with a couple of her co-workers. And, thank the Gods, she and I are not at the same hotel and we will never see eachother there--unless we are at the Crumpet store at the SAME exact time on Saturday morning...which is doubtful.

If I were a Seattle native that had already gone to PAX before, I'd go with Bumbershoot.
But I'm not. So, PAX it is!
Side note: I did have to sacrifice Warped Tour this year, for the first time in 4, for PAX though, not enough money for both. It's horrible knowing just 15 miles down the road is my annual punk rock festival going on right now.
it's not a bad show, some great acts will be there, like paramore, offspring, deathcab, beck, and even the guys from the show human giant will be performing there. but pax is still better 10x.

First off, there was already a long thread about this that finally died down...
Second off, as much as I have loved Bumbershoot in the past, I don't think the level of excitement reaches 1/10th of my excitement for PAX every year. Most of the bands that play at Bumbershoot have music you can get online, and a lot of the local acts provide that music for free.
Acts like the Stone Temple Pilots (one of my favorite bands) and Beck are hard to miss, but then I realized I have their CDs already, so the only benefit is hearing all the songs I already have listened to into the ground, but Live. The takeaway from Bumbershoot is fun, memories (maybe), and a shirt.
The takeaway from PAX, however, is community, playing games that aren't going to be out for quite some time, concerts (yeah PAX has them too), panels where you can learn something from professionals, gaming tournaments, tons of swag, and the list goes on for a long time.
I'm having trouble seeing how the two compare. Yes, I'd like to go to both, but I don't have any heartache over missing Bumbershoot.
Live Act vs. Recording is a whole 'nother discussion.
Agreed, but I think my point is still valid. With a live show at Bumbershoot, you pretty much know what you're going to get (it's not like it's a Tool concert or something). With PAX, there are sooooooooooo many more offerings than just music that you really DON'T know what you will walk away with.

That's funny that you'd use them as an example, because after seeing Tool the first thing I thought was "Man, I could have just stayed home and listened to the albums and had a lot less bruises"
maybe I wasn't on enough drugs or something, but their show was pretty boring and predictable
If you really want to do Bumbershoot, do both! Both are three days long, it's not like you have to totally miss one to catch the other. Heck, there's no Bumbershoot on Friday, and no PAX on Monday, so you even get a full day alone with each.
Dreamwriter: Sure you can jump in and out of PAX easily, but from what I hear it's not that easy to do at Bumbershoot. I thought about it myself, but I decided it would be a recipe for a stressful weekend.

well i think it is a pore situation but think of it like this.
pax must schedule around all the conventions that tie into it's interest, if you do the math large summer time conventions that deal with videogames, comic books, and tabletop games and that actually leaves very few summer time weekends for pax to possibly schedule it's self. now imagine the they also had to avoid large music festivals? there would likely be no weekend for pax.

seriously? wow my tool experience was just about on the other side o the spectrum as a matter of fact it was like my second fav concert ever and thats just because there is no toping what happened at another show... but thats a whole other story.
granted i didn't do the mosh thing so no bruises for me.

Good point. Except.... PAX doesn't schedule around other shows :P
PAX is on the last weekend in August. Always. Period.

Yeah, I'm surprised people aren't happy that they have the option to see both events in one weekend. I know I am.

Bumbershoot stopped being interesting the minute you had to start paying more than $15 - $20 for it. Maybe it's just because i'm from Seattle, but there is very little that's "new" or "exciting" at Bumbershoot anymore.

Well, that's basically what I'm going to do -- PAX on Saturday, Bumbershoot on Sunday. But if PAX weren't that weekend, I would have been at PAX all 3 days, so it's a bummer I have to miss out on a couple days of gaming, and Ken Levine's keynote, etc.
Bumbershoot is overcrowded, and pricier than it used to be, but I still have to go atleast once each season and the main stage acts this year are actually pretty good. Plus, I really enjoy going to the Flatstock exhibition each year (concert posters, with their creators) and I usually pick up one or two to add to my small collection.
(I apologize if this has already been beaten down in another thread, but I checked the main page and didn't see any other posts.)
I will be seing Beck w/Band of Horses the weekend before PAX. Playing at the Royal Theatre in Victoria.
Logue seats!

If I hadn't been able to get these I almost certainly would have tried to break away Friday night to see Beck at Bumbershoot.
Also, Tool live was awesome both times. I was scared after they played Flood - and that was without drugs.

Flatstock is almost the only reason why I go to Bumbershoot. The art is amazing, and I always end up taking some posters home with me.

Bumbershoot is Laborday weekend.
You just can't please everyone every time, but they won't overlap again for at least 5 more years.

Some year soon I plan on doing Burning Man (which I've never attended) and then PAX. The IF part of the equation is if I will survive that trip, lol.
