Edit: I'm hating Xianghua a lot less in this one than I did in previous Soul Calibur installments. Did they make her slower than before?

I think it's simply that the game it slower in general when compared to SC3. But yeah some of her moves seem to come out a lot slower.

    Alright, here you go, Voodoo:

    voodoo vs page part 1
    voodoo vs page part 2
    voodoo vs page part 3

Again I had to stick some music over it. I was playing with headphones on, so the only sound the camera was picking up was me molesting my stick (you can still hear it a bit). The video quality turned out surprisingly decent, which is nice.
Voodoo is the grand master of the playground. Last win FTW.

If the stuff I'm doing in the video doesn't seem to make any sense, it's because my inputs are awful. If it looks like I should be pursuing a combo and instead back away, it's because Page- is terrifying.

I also feel compelled to point out that our last match started at 12:58a CDT and ended at 1:02a CDT. I really had to go :P.

    Which one?

Part 1: "Kevin is Gay" - Giant Drag, "Retreat! Retreat!" - 65daysofstatic

Giant Drag is like the evil indie (negative) twin of The White Stripes. 65daysofstatic is a post-rock band out of Sheffield.

    Part 2: "Couleurs" - M83

One of my favourite albums of this last years, and I think the chirping of my crickets actually enhanced the beginning of the song.

Part 3: "I Keep Losing Heart" - Electrelane, "Oh Sombra!" - Electrelane

Electrelane is one of the most criminally underrated bands of the decade, and their music has really helped me.

    Hope that helps.

I get that. Now that I think about it, I really wish I'd used different music for the first one, but it was late and I'm lazy, so I picked the first songs that were the right length. I'm happy about the other two.

I don't know what it is, but I have more trouble with your Rock than with most Amy players. I think I can keep up, but his moves always come out faster than I expect them to. I learned a new Siegfried combo, though, so I feel pretty good about that.

(counter) 6K, 11, SCH k, SBH K, 3B. It's an escapable stun, but I expect to be able to execute it on most people anyway.

The more I mess around with the character creator (Sol Badguy, Piastol, Cooking Mama, etc.) the more I wish there were a few more facetypes.

I'd honestly prefer sliders ala Mass Effect or something, but just more face options really.

Still though, an incredible amount of fun.

I'm a little surprised there wasn't a face-molding option. Fight Night has been doing it since Round 2. You'd think it wouldn't be a big problem to implement on a 360 game. It's even worse, since half of the women's faces look like transexual hookers, so you really only have about 5 faces to pick from.

Despite this, I think I'm having as much fun playing Sword-Fighter-Dressup as I am actually Sword-Fighting.

Is there a comprehensive list of the equipment somewhere?

I've got a half-decent stable of characters, Cooking Mama and Aika (from Skies of Arcadia) being my personal favorites, and am looking to make Professor Layton, Vanessa Schneider, a few other characters. I haven't seen a male Top Hat yet, though, so who knows.

Do you have any good stories about peoples' reactions?

I had a somewhat funny encounter the other day. I beat someone in a ranked match. It wasn't a massacre or anything. I won all three rounds, but they were all close. After I sign off, I get a message from the guy saying "get a life nerd."

I guess playing a fighting game is okay, but winning at them makes you a nerd. D:

Usually I just get kicked, though once a guy (and he's even on my friends list) was all "Rock? lol," but when we played I went 3 rounds straight and he quit out just as the last hit landed. He hasn't played with me since.

People bitch about my Mina, too. I usually abuse range and CF damage with her when I play scrubs, so it's, "fight fair/like a man," or, "you only use 3 moves, what a newb." I see no reason not to use the same moves over and over again if they never get punished, do lot's of damage, and will get me easy CFs if they just stand around and block. Before the patch I was getting CFs almost every match with Mina.

My Nightmare is even worse. I only really use him when I want to abuse someone, but people bitch and moan a lot, since I usually go 3 rounds with ROs against people who don't know how to deal with 1A.

Not that hard for a 3d fighter. Easier than VF and Tekken, a little harder than DOA.

The jump from becoming a beginner to an intermediate player is pretty smooth in Soul Calibur. SC's mechanics are, for the most part, very clear and consistent. It's a really good gateway game into 3d fighters, though DOA has easier input.

I'd say Soul Calibur is one of the best fighting games to start out with, mainly because, as Page has pointed out many times, you can do very well knowing only a few of your best moves.

Go into practice mode with some of the characters that look cool to you, and try to find:
-a fast move to interrupt your opponent's slower attacks
-a low attack, preferably one that knocks the opponent to the floor
    -a move to hit side-steppers
-a powerful move or two, just in case your enemy is making mistakes

Try out these characters in the single-player content to see which one(s) you like best, and so you can get some exposure to the other characters in the game.

Of course, every fighting game is much more accessible if you have a friend or friends who are at roughly the same level as you are and who also wants to get better at the game. If you're not that lucky, I recommend many player matches with decent folk (found in this thread, for example).

My favorite opponents are guys like you. Unlike most of the people online you'd probably change your tactics if something wasn't working.

But I actually beat a guy yesterday by using only Tira's GS B+K (the Auto-impact followed by the guillotine throw) because he just did Cervy's psycho crusher over and over again.

Yesterday marked the first time I've been kicked from an online match for thoroughly destroying someone. I was so proud.

Also, Ivy's really hard to learn this time around, and she doesn't flow as well as she did in SC3 and she's not even in the same stratosphere as SC2 Ivy who is still probably my favorite character ever. But I'll get the hang of it someday.
