Mine red ringed all day on my birthday last Saturday. It hasn't done it since, but I'm contemplating just picking up a Falcon model instead. Watch, though, it be completely fine all the way up until I put Fallout 3 into the drive. Fate dictates that it should always break down at the worst possible times. :P

Eh, it's just a common phenomenon at Penny-Arcade that the closer a big game comes to release, the more cynicism and skepticism emerges. You look at the threads for both games earlier and it's all optimism and excitement. Now we're only weeks away and people are running scared, holding up cardboard signs to repent to Jesus.

And really, games like Fallout 2 and Bloodlines get more shit than they deserve. You can save and load any time. The "dying from running onto the street from a sidewalk" bug in Vice City caused me more pain than anything from these so called "buggy" games.

Just make sure to avoid whatever it was that caused the front of your car to disappear (and so you couldn't drive anywhere), and instead you had this car trunk and rear wheels that followed you around.

I like the bug with Here and Now that it's like cumulative, when you finally take it, it gives you 1 level for every 3 levels you've already got.

I took it at level 21 and got 7 levels out of that bitch.

I figured infighting would be close behind about the time some of them started accusing Bethesda of ripping off Fallout 1/2 and Van Buren and making the game look too much like Fallout. Their thought process has gone into levels of crazy that even I can't understand anymore. Do yourself a favor and don't stray past the front page. It's still one of the best spots for Fallout news, but it's been years since it was a good spot for Fallout discussion.

I got parts of a translation of that review and it definitely seemed to confirm what I've been thinking of the game for a while. If the game lives up to the review, I would probably have to agree with the score in general. It's out soon though and then I can play it myself, so it's not like I particularly care at this point: but I do have a solid idea of what to expect now from the early reviews.

How do these European fellows get the game so early anyway?

You've got to be kidding me. Fallout 2 and Bloodlines get very little shit considering how buggy they are. In fact, it's a testament to just how good the games actually are under the bugs and glitches that people give them so much praise, especially Bloodlines. It ranks amongst many people's (including my own) favourite games in spite of the fact that at release it is virtually unplayable - horrendous graphics glitches (and I'm not talking dodgy clipping here, I'm talking random polygons that stretch off into infinity), broken quests...it was just fucked, but the official and fan patches fix it up enough to let you drive it home more or less in one piece and enjoy it all the way.

Also, what's the VC bug? Are you just talking about the fact that you kept accidentally stepping out underneath traffic and getting killed or did some versions actually have a bug? I never encountered any in VC...

"Because in Fallout 3 I get almost everything served directly. Bethesda have tried to squeeze in as much as possible on area as small as possible. Substance enough for a lifetime in short-movie format, if you want to. And the result is an anticlimax, too much of the good in too short time. Some slavers are walking around with their slaves just around the corner and some raiders just settled down a bit farther away. A quick jog and I'm a nest of deathclaws. It's compressed, maximized and anonymized at the same time. It feels like a enormous orgy where nobody wants to fire away. There's tight and crowded, but no friction nor excitement. Many parts, but no entirety. And this feeling of getting the world pushed in my the face is the single largest weakness with Fallout 3, and every one that loved the original two games will scratch their head, wondering."

I have a question, though, for anyone who has seen the game in action on the Xbox 360. Hopefully someone who went to PAX can tell me this. How is the aliasing in the game? If it's got a lot of jaggies, I'll probably end up picking it up on PC instead.

It's awesome when a game gets jabbed for having too much content.

I figured that it would either be an unpopulated waste land or a surprisingly busy place, apparently they chose the busy route. I'm happy, more people to kill and take their clothes from.

That seems like both a good thing and a bad thing. One of the problems of Oblivion was how much empty map there was. You're just running and running with nothing to do but look at pretty scenery. I'm imagining that the scenery isn't even that pretty in a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

Although a bit of clan warfare ala STALKER would've been nice.

You know, I can definitely see that. One key aspect of "wasteland atmosphere" is a sense of isolation. But I'd rather have too much content than too little.

Tim Cain of Fallout interviewed about F3

"It's not necessarily the direction I would've gone, but I can tell you I have my Fallout 3 pre-ordered. I want my life-sized Pip-Boy. I'm going to be playing that at the end of the month."

"To be honest, I'm looking forward to Fallout 3 as a consumer, not a developer. I just want to play it and enjoy it," he said.

You know, that really puts into perspective how obsessed the NMAians are. The goddamn creator of the game doesn't care as much as they do.

"The biggest problem I have with expanding the game is that the original games were designed to make you feel like you were one of the last people left on Earth. And with Fallout 3 and the online version, I'm curious about how they'll handle making the game not feel too crowded--making it feel like there's not much life left out there after the war."

That's easy. Just get the guys who did The Matrix: Online to make it. I'd imagine that game feels pretty empty.

I'm sure he does, its his creation, but he knows he can't change anything,he admits its their IP now, and burning any bridges isn't good for his career.

I just paid for my pre-order in full. The game might not be the second coming of Christ but the only people with that unreasonable level of expectation would be the NMA-ers who are undoubtedly going to pirate the game.
