Sibelius ornamentation playback

TrentusTrentus Registered User regular
So I've just been having a play around in Sibelius 5, and have just been reminded about one thing that has bugged me for a couple of years. I've never been able to get ornamentation playback happening (I've used each version of Sibelius since version 2).

My mate just sent me a chart with some spills (glissando) and I was very disappointed to not hear them in the playback. I've got some arrangements I've done with a butt load of trills and turns, but you never hear them in the playback.

I know Sibelius can play them but I've just never been able to get it to do it. Is there some super secret preference or menu item I haven't ticked? If anyone could help me out, it would be much appreciated.

Gimme a few minutes to look through it.

edit: I can't find any options to make it play.

And for some reason my copy will not register. I use register online and the next page comes up blank and only lets me choose register later. So now I can't save.

I'll try reinstalling in a little bit.

Yeah, I haven't had much luck with net registration in the past. A good keygen makes life a lot easier though. I figure that so long as I pay for the software and don't distribute it to friends, then I can take the moral high ground and using a keygen is okay. Plus it saves me having to call them so they can generate a key for me.

    Thanks for checking though dude.

OMFG $329??? Just for the Educational version? This must be the Adobe CS suite of music. Have you tried calling the developers (not emailing, CALLING) and asking them about it?

Yeah Sibelius is one of the top of the line music composition programs. It is so much easier to use than stuff like Finale.

Also, a lot of music software is pretty expensive. Cubase and Finale are both somewhere around $600, if I remember right.

I used to use one of the lower-end Finale products, then I tried Sibelius and I have never looked back. If only the damned thing was cheaper, I wouldn't be typing my life away with Lilypond.

In regards to the original question, I'd like to add that I, too, have never managed to get a glissando in playback. It was the one thing that I could never figure out. I think I had it working in 3 or 4, but not in 5.

When I first got it, my teacher had some special discount card thing he gave to me. I ended up getting about $90 off the student price, so that was pretty awesome. And then just upgrades from then on.

I just heard back from a mate, and unfortunately he wasn't much help. He's on Sibelius 3, and it apparently "just works" for him. I'll be meeting up with a couple of guys on sunday who all use it, so I'll ask around and see what I can find.

Yeah, i had the student version of Finale for a while, and I really hated the input on it. Also no matter what, all my instruments sound like a plinky piano, but that could just be something in my MIDI settings.
I've never used actual Sebelius, but I love Scorch. Easiest way to get nice clean sheets off the web.

Have you updated to 5.2 yet? The first release had a ton of glitches with playback, especially with sound libraries. Try that first.

I use finale, and anyone who is comparing Finale notepad to Sibelius full really needs to try the full version of 2008. The differences in the programs are not anything to do with real functionality anymore, just personal taste.

I also suspect it's an issue with your version of Sibelius. I still use version 3 (too cheap to upgrade) and it does ornaments.

Sibelius 5 is apparently the red headed stepchild of the line up. The music tech professor @ university actually warned me against upgrading to that particular version because it had been rushed to market for some incredibly stupid reason I can't remember at this exact moment.

Yeah, I have the 5.2 update and no dice, thanks Vater. So, none of the dudes I met up with have ornamentation playback either (one was one 4, the other on 5) which is annoying. I sorta thought we'd get it worked out then, but oh well.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions guys. If I ever find a solution I'll open the thread up again and post it for all who want it.
