The problem is that to get all that resilience gear, you pretty much have to suffer through getting your face pounded in repeatedly in the Arena to get your points.
You should run some instances and get a few pieces of Honor Gear before stepping into Arena. Based on rating, you shouldn't be facing people in full Gladiator's.

I don't like pvping on my priest, but you gotta do it to be good in arenas.
I just wish they'd make a talent which at least in part changes +healing over to +dmg at like a 70% rate.
Heck, even if it was 50% I'd do it (maybe 10% for each point?). Put it high in the Holy Tree in place of the useless Blessed Resilience. That would make Holy Priests viable for soloing.
And give it a cool name like "Divine Power" or "Holy Transfusion".
Blessed Resilience is really damn good in the arena
With the +healing I'm sitting on, even a 50% conversion rate would be more than most spellcasters have.
SoR now adds a "Insert stupid hardcore 'OMG ANGEL OF ANGER' name here" form, when activated it increases your spell damage by 40% of your healing, not usable inside an instance/battleground/arena.
It may not be possible to implement, but it'd make priests be able to farm mobs without making smite priests the greatest thing to ever exist.
So I've decided to work some more on my priest, but after playing a feral druid for so long grinding a holy priest is just too painful from me, so I'm thinking about spec'ing shadow for the first time ever.
I was thinking of using this build so I could still have some effectiveness healing 5-mans.
Any comments?
Note: I'm at 65 right now, I'm just looking at what I am switching to right now, the last 5 points I was thinking of sinking further in holy, or wand spec.
Go for a full shadow spec with some points in discipline. You don't need any holy talents to heal sub-70 instances, unless your group is retarded, then you're screwed regardless of your spec.
I use this myself and I can heal most level 70 instances just fine (I do have some decent healing gear though).

yeah, you are probably right, it's just i've been holy with that guy forever, for some reason I wanted to keep a bunch of points in it, but i might as well do this spec for ease of soloing.

Yeah, shadow is the way to go. I was questing in Shadowmoon with my friend who's a warrior and we were slaughtering everything, including elites, no problem. VE would keep him up for the most part and if he ever took a large amount of damage I could always drop out of shadowform and spam heals. I think I love my priest more than my hunter and I took my hunter into MC/BWL/AQ40.
Holy god, I'm leveling a priest, who is 15 right now, and it's assbreakingly painful. I can grind, it's just...so ugh. Any tips?
Make sure to get a wand, it makes the lower levels go by much easier until you can get mind flay. Also, put your first few points into spirit tap.
Yeah. Buy the highest DPS wand you can find for your level. It's the only piece of gear which it's really worth repeatedly buying off the AH while you're levelling.
And it'll get alot easier once you get mindflay. And once you hit 40, it's bliss.

Why would I do Arenas? There's nothing there for me aside from gear that I'd only use to solo.

You could do arenas because arenas, with a competent group, are fucking fun. Some of the greatest fun in the game in those arenas, tight and stressful at times, but fun. I love the arenas for the pvp aspect, what I said earlier was mainly refering to bgs, which I do hate.
I posted my talent build in the "developer chat" thread, but no one mocked me, so I'll try posting it here too. This is my response to the sheer lack of spirit-endowed PvP gear. It seems like the role that Blizzard intends us to fill is that of "go in, spend your mana as fast as you can, then die"; I always thought that was more of a mage role, but, looking at the gear selections at 70, I think we fit in there too. We're not meant to last long at all. We go in, wreak as much havoc as possible, then hope it was enough for our teammates to do the rest. I never thought priests would be in this kind of role, and it's kind of aggravating to find myself here, but I'm certainly more useful when doing this than I am when trying to conserve mana and last out the battle.

Cut yourself. Mail me pics.
Once you get deeper into Shadow, it's easy. Early levels go quickly enough to not whine about it.
Whiner.
You had your chance to cut me yourself. Hate yourself for not taking the opportunity.
Also, I'm level 36 now, and it's getting a lot better as I get closer to 40. Do you think 40'll be this huge leap in "awesome"? Because it's actually starting to feel that way.

I don't enjoy PvP on my Priest. I don't find it enjoyable in the least. I detested BGs, and I don't like the Arena from what I've played of it on my Priest. If I respec for a more Arena-friendly build, my PvE ability goes down the toilet, and I have little enough money as it is to keep respeccing every goddamn day for Arena.
It doesn't help that I have no PvP gear whatsoever.

Eh, all you need to pvp as a priest is blessed resilience and martyrdom. It's not hard at all to spec around those and stay useful on raids. I'm not saying it's the best class you could take into PvP, but it's not like jabbing needles into your eyes.
Get a guild group going and do some warsongs or AB's.. can have a ton of fun, even holy spec. If you do AV, find the best geared tank and just follow him around. It's criminal what a warrior receiving heals can accomplish.
Getting my guild, as a whole, to do anything PvP-related is nigh impossible. We can't even get a steady Arena team, and our Karazhan raids have been getting more and more erratic of late.

Yea arenas at first aren't great, but once you start getting them down to kind of a formula and go into all the theorycraft it has an odd appeal to it.
Firebert. Spec shadow! Pull with MB, strafe away casting pain, replace the two smites with three (or two) mind flays, shield when the mob get closes, and wand.

10-30 as a priest is just... erg. The priest-breaker. Smite smite MB smite smite drink. etc. Once you got Mind flay things get better. Etc. Shadow form is just the icing on the cake. Glad to see you made it past the 20's. All down hill from here, unless someone makes you spec holy.
Once I got deep enough into Shadow, I stopped using PW:S entirely. I'd go:
Mind Blast opener (spin 180º and start running, I started opening with Vampiric Touch once I got it)
Cast SW:P and VE while running
Spin around and start casting Mind Flay as soon as the global cooldown is up (with Shadow Reach you should get two full channels of it in before they get to you, three if you have points in Blackout and it procs)
Either hit a second Mind Blast or wand til dead, depending on how much mob health is left
With VE and maybe Inner Fire up, any damage you take when the mob is hitting you will likely be healed by the time it's dead.

Yep, but for now it's all about the shield. Or you could not shield and get a bunch of bandages (If you're an alt this is easy) it adds in the 10 second down time or whatever, but it's easier than burning through water every 3 mobs.
From levels 20 through 38 on my then-Shadow Priest, I never used PW:S unless I was fighting multiple mobs.
It just isn't needed.
I think until about mid-30s the mana cost of pws is worth it to keep from getting interrupted, makes things quicker. Once beyond that your dots/what does get through will hit for enough that it doesn't really matter. But when you're still dealing with the smites and holy fires and such you tend to have an issue.

Why not just fear? It's far more mana efficient and doesn't depend on mob damage for it's duration. Perhaps I'm out of touch, though, because it's been a while since I've been in the mid 30's.
I have another question. Does anyone here have some strong input on priest usefulness in 70 PvP? I bought TBC a couple of months ago and I have a rogue at 63 and a (shadow) priest at 66. I've also been toying with leveling my 30 paladin. I'm having trouble deciding where to put my time. I'm not looking for the FotM, but I know from leveling a priest that some classes can be more fun by virtue of their desirability alone.
Am I going to get a lot of "well, because our pally isn't logged in we'll take you to the arena"? I don't care what spec I go, just so long as it's desired.
Priest probably isn't optimal for arenas, but they aren't useless.
Get martyrdom and blessed resilience and you can be quite tough to take down. Certain things are no contest, like a warlock dotting the shit out of you or a MS warrior gluing himself to your butt, but for the most part you'll be an effective healer.
Until you get focused fire. Then it's game over, no matter what. Have to rely on your team CCing people off you to fix that.
One of the problems with shadow priests in PvP is that while you are able to put out your highest dps, you limit your own survivability by locking out access to your healing spells. Under focused fire, a shadow priest will go down in a couple seconds, even if they are VEing the shit out of someone.
Of course you can run around out of shadow form, which I frequently do when I PvP, and then you just have to deal with all the normal problems priests have at surviving in PvP but with none of the awesome survivability tricks from the disc tree or the raw healing output from holy.
I'm sure Saeris will be along shortly to tell you how awesome disc is in PvP.
I LOVE PvP healing as a priest. Fuck shadow for BGs. Dispelling and fear bombing and healing and buffing and keeping two rogues alive while they just slice up everyone around them.

Jesus, I felt awesome.
I think plenty of people would love pvp healing as a priest if they felt they could survive, which is why so many people love healing pallies in pvp.
Are blessed recovery, martyrdom, and blessed resilience enough?

Nope.
That's part of the reason priests freaked out so much when they gave Prayer of Mending a cooldown. Admittedly, it was probably mildly overpowered in 1v1 situations if the priest had full mana and could spam it forever.

so far I have been:
Mind Blast
SW: Pain
Smite
Smite
Wand
with maybe a shield or renew thrown in there to top me off
Then I bought the best wand for my level.
Early on a priest's wand is his most important piece of equipment.
