The thing about Snow Crash is that it was like the shittiest fucking book I ever read, but all the while reading it I was like "why am I reading this dull-ass crap instead of playing it?"

It's full of stuff that would be awesome in a video game, but it's the worst fucking book I ever had the misfortune to read.

I didn't think it was that bad. But then again I don't know what would be an AWESOME book. I mean I like Orson Scott Card.

Card is my favorite author. People only talk about the Ender books, but his fantasy novels and a few other sf books are pretty awesome too. I defy anyone here to read to the end of Hart's Hope and not love it.

I've never read an Orson Scott Card book, and I know that he's a raging homophobe

so I don't think I will read one any time soon

he doesn't agree with himself about homosexuality

he doesn't think they should get married, but he has books with positive, sympathetic homosexual characters, and one book called Songbird where the main character is homosexual

I got no problem reading Ender's Game a couple more times

Yeah Card has at least one (I think more, I'm forgetting) novel prominently featuring homosexual characters in a sympathetic light

    I use somewhat large words.

In other words what Centipede said

Also, he is one of those people who separates his beliefs from his writing, at least on a conscious level. He would call it dishonest to impose his own beliefs on the characters he creates.

card does nothing but spew his beliefs in his books

fuck, half his red son series is "oh look how bad racism is against these poor poor indians" all ultra hacked together

fuck card, man, I read way too much of his shit and one day realized god damn this is lousy stuff

and snow crash, man, there's some good ideas in there, but fuck, it has great pace at the start and then it gets fucking slow and retarded and holy shit inconsistent and stupid

I'd start with a ten and start deducting numbers the further away your audience gets from "in high school" and "completely fucking stoned."

Stop at about three for an extremely decent soundtrack.

Edit: Ah, hell. Make it a four for "Sometimes, I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion!"

Creating an allegory is different from making a character and then saying "oh, this character would do X, but that's against my Mormon beliefs so I'm going to change it"

I really loved some of the stories in Maps in a Mirror, partially because my dad read them to me as I was growing up. However, I'd like all of Card's work a lot more if he wasn't so opinionated.

I just read the first Discworld novel after hearing so many people rave about it. I enjoyed it, but I don't feel the need to read on.
