Common sense actually hit Microsoft like a brick recently.

Now that games for windows live is actually free now, you can all go pick up that copy of gears of war that you've been holding off to get, or at least I can.

What is Games for Windows Live?

Introducing Games for Windows – LIVE, the free gaming service built for Windows that makes great Windows games even better. With Games for Windows – LIVE, you get an online identity – called a gamertag – and a friends list that works across multiple games, the XBOX 360, and even the Zune music service. You can easily find and communicate with your friends online with text and voice chat. Earn achievements and Gamerscore that lets you track and compare your accomplishments.

Play multiplayer games with your friends, or play against new opponents online using our exclusive TrueSkill™ matchmaking system – with other Windows® players or with or against XBOX 360 players (in supported games.)

Upcoming games coming out for live:

More games coming soon.

    Finally!

Will this allow us to play our 360 amigos in games like Shadowrun?

This happened a month ago. Is FO3 even a Live title? I don't see the Live striping on that GFW box.

    FO3 will have live achievements.

Guess you can't really depend on joystick for news.

So if live is free on PC games does that mean I can use my 360 gamertag on my pc for free?

Also I thought it was only a few games that were free and only for a limited time.

Nope, Live is now completely free.

Yes, you can use your 360 gamertag on your pc I believe.

Sacred 2 (dungeon hack'n'slash) is also a "games for windows"-title.

Yeah. I just got PC gears of war the other week. I had completely forgotten that the gold-related stuff was free now. But sure enough, you can play it online without issue.

I personally actually found it somewhat annoying to have to create a Live profile though. But that's me.

This makes multiplayer XNA games more feasible, by the way. Before you basically had to choose between approximately three people using you game's multiplayer on PC but maintaining the same code base between platforms, or implementing your own separate multiplayer system for PC only, and having to manage changes to the game in both.

I'm very happy this is free now, as there is no longer a need to consider that clusterfuck.
